Saturday the 16th a team from Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery went down to Slaughterhouse Gulch to pull a H1 Humvee out of the forest that suffered a catastrophic drive train failure climbing the south loop of the trail.
Reports indicated that the rear differential failed while climbing the hill, essentially "grenading" the ring gear. Upon trying to limp the vehicle out in what is now front wheel drive, the transfer case chain also snapped. This left the vehicle with absolutely no power to the wheels.
Once on scene they winched that vehicle back onto the trail so it was pointed downhill, and since it ran with power steering and brakes, the owner just coasted it down to the bottom of the hill so a dead tow could be rigged.
From there the team proceeded back to the north to climb the hill without a lot of flexing washout obstacles, and made it down to the parking lot without incident.
We thank the trail users yesterday for understanding we had to temporarily block downhill access for a few minutes as we made our way through the trail. That daisy chain of vehicles would have been impossible to make room for vehicles to pass by, not to mention regaining that uphill momentum from a dead stop.

What is a 4x4 with out battle scares? A mall crawler! I have done many rescues. Most for free. The stupid I have charged. The only way to fix stupid is to charge. That and to recoup costs to find the stupid. Never made money doing it. Just free fun and stories. My hat off to you and your team.

Looks like Slaughterhouse Gulch got a Mother Nature mod … when a trail becomes boring you only have to wait a bit and problem solved, less boring! Chainsaw class?! Is that a thing?! Mine has a 22” bar…no big deal!! Har Har!!

DAM, your bar is bigger than my bar, I only have a 20" bar. Then again, I have more than 4 horsies running my small bar, LOL.

@@TheLittlered1961 those little ponies can run like mad I’m sure … but my chain runs sharp and true … a sprocket from Mr. Spacely gives me enough thrust to jet thru what I need to do!

@@lastborn69 Sorry you missed the point. It's a joke. It's not the size of the rise, it's the throb of the nob that does the job. My comment was a joke.

Now imagine my 15 AEV power wagon with lift and 37" mud terrain tires. All terrain sucks for mud. Lugs are not big enough nor wide enough. Get packed full and become slicks.

what tow/bridle ropes did you have connected to the front of the Hummer?

I've run slaughter many times including in winter. After those monster rains in 2021 and the forest service reworking the trail with water breaks and fixing the washout areas it's a completely different trail and that's not a bad thing.

@@JustinKingOffroad yes they are. Especially if you order it bare and have it Line-X'd. They are a game changer for the approach on a power wagon. I have a Thuren bumper for myv4th gen. Mercenary makes nice ones for the 5th gen.

Can you do a No Bs review of your Jeep JLU? I have a Jeep JKU Sahara Manual, and I have Crohn's disease. And with crohns disease comes arthritis, (for me it's in the Hips and Knees). When I'm driving, it does sometimes hurt to change gears simply by pushing in the clutch, and it always has to be the days that traffic is horrible. I've considered converting her to a Automatic but the amount of headache it would be is a little high. Thus I've been looking at the JLs, specifically the Willys trim. Love your videos, always learn something new every time I watch, take care.

So fun fact, I actually recorded one but hated it and never released it. I might have to do that again properly this time.

Sorry for your disability. My opinion is to trade it out. Money to convert will be more than to find what you want. Of course I have no idea how much you have in your current Jeep with up grades.. Tough choice here.
