Colorado Mallcrawlers

Күн бұрын

Poughkeepsie Gulch is known as San Juan's Toughest Trail. We take it to create a video Trail Guide with my brand new completely stock Jeep TJ, a Cherokee KL Trailhawk, a Nissan Xterra, a Jeep JK, and Sean's brand new Jeep Wrangler JLU. We start on Mineral Creek also known as Lower Engineer Pass and then head onto Poughkeepsie Gulch. We don't bypass the good stuff and show how the Colorado Mallcrawlers get it with what many consider underpowered off-road vehicles. Will we succeed?
Channel Members have access to our filming schedule and I want you to be in the videos! The Black Bear crew gets additional easy to edit videos but offer more up to date info on trails (since guides take a while to put together). The Holy Cross crew gets more say in what videos get edited for the channel (video credits and early looks at Trail Guide edits). / @coloradomallcrawlers

Gotta talk to Drew and see what he wants to edit next… I probably won’t make it till next summer if he wants to cut the trip video of this one. I did "the wall" over 11 years ago in my built ZJ. It was my first difficult trail after the build. I still have fond memories as to how well the ZJ performed. I was with the Military Jeepers out of Colorado Springs & was so glad I didn't embarrass myself. I sold that ZJ a coupla years ago & the new owner still takes it out on the trails from time to time.

Don't be afraid to air down more, you'd be surprised how much traction your vehicles would gain ! Looked like most of you were close to street pressure. You don't need beadlocks near as much as the "experts" who run them say. Really nice video !!
@Drew.Hunter.Maker.Artist
@Drew.Hunter.Maker.Artist 6 ай бұрын
@timmcooper294 Airing down in most situations on most Colorado trails is really only for comfort. On this trail the Xterra was at 17 and I know the JLU was around the same. Most tires really don't start massively deforming to a degree large enough to affect the contact patch until around 15 psi, as you mentioned looking at my Duratracts even though they are also only thinner 6 ply and load range C they still didn't deform much. And on my 33s I needed all the clearance I could get. If there was mud/snow or if the rocks were wet would have been the only reason I would have gone lower. Appreciate your input and glad you enjoyed the video!
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers 6 ай бұрын
Thank you about the video! As Drew said, none of us are afraid to air down and we have all been very low on non-beadlocks. I air down for sand, snow, mud, wet rocks, and on the trail when I actually need more traction. I don’t need it for comfort and our videos show you don’t need it for most Colorado trails. This is also a trail guide… it should never look too easy.
@timmcooper294

I totally get it, I guess after 40 years of off roading I'm a little too used to seeing more tire flex and better hooking up when climbing. Especially the little TJ! I run 2 rigs, one on 37's and the other on 7.50-16 bias ply "grave diggers". I live a few miles from the Rubicon, and several other trails more difficult than it are close by. I hate giving up ground clearance, but the traction of single digits got me into the habit. Even my little 32 inch 7.50-16's get down to 9psi front, 7 psi rear and hook up amazing. Got tired of bead lock problems many years ago , so I built my own "cheater" wheels for both rigs. Keep up with the nice videos !!@@coloradomallcrawlers

@@coloradomallcrawlerswouldn’t airing down help the trail not get rutted out?
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers 6 ай бұрын
@AustinH7 nah, I believe that’s an old wives tale based on watching a ton of off-road film while editing. As a scientist, I believe more regimented testing needs to be done… but I’m fairly certain that it’s multifactorial. With speed, big tires, heavy rigs, and 2WD wheeling being more consequential than aired up small tires going through a trail slowly. We film a lot of close up angles of tires and that’s where I really observed it.

Also, I do air down, but not all the time. My video prove you don’t need to air down for every trail. You are always welcome to and I don’t encourage others to follow my lead… I’m just a decades long off-roader and have no issue with comfort on the trail. Had it been raining while wheeling, I would have aired down. While the others aired down, I set up the cameras to film this video.

Only concern is the Trailhawk driver should not reach almost his entire upper body out of the window when going over off-camber obstacles. If his vehicle suddenly goes he won't have time to pull back into the cabin. He should either walk the trail more or rely on spotters.

This was literally the first time I've wheeled with other people. I've gotten so used to wheeling alone that this has just become a habit of mine (for better or worse). I typically do a walk through of an obstacle, taking note of where my driver front tire should be for my line, and I lean out to see it. It is indeed not the best visibility out of the seat. 🤙🏼

@@coloradomallcrawlers As you said, if you really want a rougher ride, less traction, more chances of breaking something, more chance of sidewall punctures, and to tear up the terrain more then you have the right to do so. But apparently you know the advantages of airing down, were rocks mean to you in school so you cant air down for them? hehehe I started wheeling in 1967 when my father bought his first Jeep and I got my own Jeep when I was 15. There is no combination of vehicle/tires/terrain I havent seen hundreds of times over in the last 50+ years. Just trying to help, airing down is something that is not as common as it used to be. Years ago EVERYONE on a trip aired down, this was before anyone had compressors on their vehicles. In your video everyone struggled on obstacles that you should have walked up, and I am not talking about the wet rocks.

This is a difficult rated trail and we had small vehicles by modern day standards doing it with relative ease. Our core crew also all goes for the harder lines to make the video more interesting. We are making a guide, we don’t want it to look too easy. It needs to show the true overall difficulty of the trail. Also, it was all our first time (except Eric) on the trail. I walked up this trail in the JL when I was just backing up a friend. I haven’t been wheeling as long as you, but I have been wheeling for a long time. I spent a lot of time in off-road parks with mid south Jeeps. I learned a lot from those old school wheelers along with my own experience. We all knew the benefits of airing down for certain conditions, but overall it was a waste of time of easier difficult trails like this one. I also wheel stock, and have yet to truly break something and I wheel trails people think my stock Jeep doesn’t belong on. I respect your decision to air down, but I get told to air down way too much. I have rarely been hindered from not being aired down and I do a lot of trails and have done a ton of trails over the last two decades. I also show when I need to air down (wheeler lake, radical hill) which offers additional insight to a trail guide which is what I do here.

I have both, and the liberty. The thing is the JL makes most of Colorado’s trails too easy. I enjoy wheeling for the scenery, but I want some challenge on easier trails. So my plan is to armor up the JL and probably add 35s and gears and use that on trails like Mount Blanca. I’d build the factory Jeep that Jeep should have built… an extreme recon 2 door. Then the liberty and TJ will take over on most trail guides. My goal is that we are looked at as a trails channel… not really a Jeep channel.

Your 2004 Rubicon should have a Nv3550 trans not a ax15. Ax15's were stopped being used after 1999 I believe. But anyways nice rubicon, I love my 05 rubi and miss my 03

I can see you need to air down, tires way to hard. like 18 pounds in those rocks. It will be much smoother riding too.
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers 6 ай бұрын
Yet I am comfortable at full psi. Airing down use to be for traction, now all I hear is for comfort. Maybe I’m just too old school, but I still stick to airing down for traction meaning lower psi for sand, mud, wet rocks, and snow.

Wouldn't it be cool if Jeep came out with a Wrangler or entirely new vehicle that slots above the Rubicon 392 in terms of killer offroading performance? Minimum 37" tires and better shocks, winch, etc.

It would, but they’d ignore the 2 door model so I’m over what FCA/Jeep does. I’ll just do what I want myself.

The Liberty has been overheating all of 2023. I live in Colorado and it’s in Tennessee. When I fly to Tennessee, it’s to help my parents, not do stuff for myself (like fix the liberty). So it has been a slow process, but it no longer overheats and my next edit is a liberty video.

I’ve had 8 Jeeps… three were green as that’s what I personally preferred. Sarge is one of my favorite colors. However all my green jeeps haven’t been as good as my yellow jeeps. My mom originally got me my first yellow Jeep (the 2000 TJ sport). I was using a 1997 2.5L TJ… I didn’t want the color, but I wanted the motor. However yellow has served me well and I now prefer it.

I’ve hadn’t had that experience… I keep trying new ones to see if I’ll be one of them. This was a joke about it being a lemon because it got stuck. The yellow ones got stuck in mud too so I was trying to show I wasn’t really serious. I did keep the 2000 over the 2004 tho, I just liked my 2000 a lot.
