You have to love Colorado, most of the state is an off road paradise. Only been there once to see my Broncos defeat the Raiders in Dec of '96 at ole Mile High Stadium. The last year they wore the classic and best unis in their history. A remarkable 13 - 3 record squandered by an ill prepared playoff team. Anyway, wish I could take my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn 4.0 along with your crew on these amazing off road adventures. Just great to see 4 highly capable off road vehicles getting through very challenging trails. And the views are second to none. Must say, the man with the XJ sure does plow through a large percentage of this at a higher rate of speed than I do off road. Guess I'm a little more cautious in my "slightly" older years. Still a blast to watch that ole 4.0 do so well. Your JL Rubicon is phenomenal, I recently told a couple on the trail, there is absolutely no need to ever modify theirs, right out of the showroom, it's among the most capable vehicles in stock form and they agreed, its an absolute animal. 33's with a modest yet solid stock lift. Not sure if they are mud terrains, but if they aren't, that would be the only mod/upgrade I would ever do on a JL Rubicon. O|||||||O 🇺🇸 Only in a 2 Dr 🇺🇸 '41 - '06 I respect all the 2 doors, but I definitely prefer the '41 - '06 pre Wranglers and Wranglers.

@@JeepTJWheelin oh and I was at work when you first commented. My Rubicon came with Falken Wildpeak MTs. MTs use to be standard on the Rubicon (TJ had GY MTRs, JK has BFG KMs), but now KO2s are the standard option with the Falken MTs being an option. I’m not a fan of KO2s so of course I was going to order it with MTs. My only issue with it is the rock rails… the 4 door has a beefier Mopar option, but I don’t think the 2 door does or I would have ordered that. My rock rails have been a weak link, but still better than nothing.

Gnarly trail. Many years ago, in o moment of youthful indiscretion, i took my bone stock 4runner - shit tires, running boards even - down that road looking for a way to CB. Had no idea. It was June, high water. By the time i got down the first boulder and realized i wouldnt be able to climb out. Made it all the way to the creek at the bottom of the last boulder hill. Water was rushing 3+ ft deep. No visibility and slick. Setting sun. Gunned it. Hopelessly high centered with water coming in door. Got rescued by some crazy locals. Good times.

I’m a huge fan as that’s what got me hooked on Jeeps. I lived in South Florida when I turned 15/16 and didn’t want the Jeep. I wanted a fast car, however Florida got flooded by a hurricane and I was water fording everywhere. Loved it and Florida dried out well from the storm so all was well.

My only grievance about plastic parts on off-road vehicles is they are usually the first thing to be hit, break or lowest part of modern vehicles. Had a few scrapes on my Renegade from a trail because the bumpers and exhaust are nearly the lowest parts, excluding frame and drive components.
@coloradomallcrawlers

True, but plastic is lightweight, somewhat durable, but it’s usually very cheap to replace.

awesome! why did you choose a 2 door, manual jl over the 4 door automatic?
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers Жыл бұрын
Thank you! This is my 6th wrangler… they’ve all been 2 doors and sticks. The stick is more fun as a daily driver and I like a challenge when wheeling (however, filming adds challenge so I probably should have ordered the 8 speed due to the channel). I prefer a 2 door as it’s nimble and an extremely balanced vehicle. I have tried a couple 4 doors on extended test drives and also on the trail, they just weren’t for me. Great for many tho! Thanks for watching!

@@coloradomallcrawlers have you had any stability issues when you are driving off-camber? i’m planning to get a jl but i haven’t decided the body type yet
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers Жыл бұрын
All 2 & 4 door wranglers have a low center of gravity, especially stock and without a hard top on it. 4 doors may climb slightly better, but have worse breakover angles than 2 doors meaning you need under armor and it’s easier to get high centered. 4 doors can carry more, 2 doors feel more nimble to me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think two doors look better, altho I could build a 4 door that would look good to me. Hope that helps… I think I talked about this stuff in my JL vs JK video. If not, maybe I’ll make a two vs four comparison.

Filming question: is your camera inside or outside of the windshield? I recently filmed our trip in the San Juans using a GoPro mounted inside on the dash. I was disappointed that the footage had a lot of reflection and glare from the windshield. I'm thinking next time it might be better to mount it outside? Thanks for all your videos.
@coloradomallcrawlers
@coloradomallcrawlers Жыл бұрын
Inside on a mount so radio transmissions can be picked up. We correct with color grading but now I’m using a polarizer… not sure if it’ll be better but we try not to use too much dash cam. Outside on windshield is best for showing scenery, but batteries die and you miss the driver view.

The most cost effective will be what's called a PML "poor man's lift" which involves cranking your torsion bars so the front is 1-2 inches higher, getting longer shackles the same length you lifted the front and then longer shocks otherwise you'll break your stock ones because they'll be limiting the travel. Getting lifted Upper control arms helps get caster and camber back into alignment and getting higher spring rate torsion bars and leaf springs also helps. Manual locking hubs are recommended for durability over the stock auto ones. Heavy duty tie rod adjusters are pretty much mandatory along with an idler brace. The steering components can flex under stress and if you hit a rock on one side with enough force it can flex the center link into the frame and turn the stock tie rod adjusters into bananas. Body lifts are also an option they just take a bit of wrenching to get installed. The best place I found information for First Gen Xterras is a Facebook group called "FirstgenXterraDen" lots of posts on various topics and troubleshooting as well as files section for reference. Xterra nation is also a forum that has lots of info as well. Like with anything you can get it done cheap but it might not perform the best or be of the best quality and you may be replacing those components after only a year or two depending on how you off-road. The more components you add the better performance you'll get. However there are 5-10 different components that all work together in your suspension and only changing a few puts more stress on the rest. I went the extra mile and replaced everything since it was worn out and 22 years old when I got it. Feel free to message me if you have more questions or would like some more tips. Always good to see other Xterras on the trail!
