Top of the World Trail Guide for Stock Vehicles. Top of the World trail is a difficult trail near Moab, Utah. We find out what are Top of the World's vehicle requirements. We also show the entire trail and all the obstacles using a stock Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon and unlocked even smaller Jeep Cherokee XJ. We follow the funtreks route and show the overlook, dewey bridge, the no bypass and bypass obstacles including one TrailsOffroad called Nasty. My name is Dewie Jones and I’m the reluctant host, videographer, and video editor for the channel. I’ve daily driven a wrangler my entire driving life starting with a 1997 TJ, most recently a ten year old 2012 JK, and now new 2021 JL. I like the challenge of driving a stock wrangler on tough trails. My buds are not new to wheeling either, but for their own specific reasons, now wheel aggressive SUV based off-roaders like Cherokees, 4Runners, Land Cruisers, VW Touregs, and Renegades. We decided Colorado Mallcrawlers was a funny name so that's how we got here. We film our trail runs letting whatever happens, happen and then later make the video an accurate trail guide with comments on how to do it better than us.
For trail planning, I use the Funtreks Books (amazon search: Funtreks books). I have the current editions of the Colorado books, Arizona, California, and Moab. I finish up my trail planning with TrailsOffroad as they can sometimes have more detail as well as user submitted current conditions feedback. I use GAIA GPS with TrailsOffroad waypoints on UConnect currently. one (although I'm not paying attention to it on filming days). In September 2020, we ran Top of the World with our ‘98 TJ. We were on 31” tires (29.5” when aired down) and had a rear limited slip and open front. We didn’t have any trouble at all. We did break a passenger rear lower control arm on the obstacle you call “Nasty” on the way out. It was dark and the ride back to town was a little squirrelly. It was my birthday and one of the great experiences of my life. I had dreamed of Moab for 30 years.

I have a 15 Cherokee LATITUDE AD1 that I've moderate built. 31.5x9.5 tires and 1.5'" spacers plus a handful of other little things. future plans I'm going full custom fab so hopefully ill get a social media account going for it. BUT point is, I do not have true high/low with AD1 and I show up a lot of really well built rigs and I very much so keep up with the trail hawk trims. its really about skill, spotters and patience. you can go a lot of places with rigs that "aren't meant to be". the important part is having someone with you, long distance comms and or recovery gear. 99% of the time you can get yourself out with a little can do and common sense. love the videos!

Thanks for putting together these trail guides! Gave me the confidence to go out and run the trail in June 2023. We ran it my Ram 1500 Regular Cab Short bed on 35s. Tough trail in spots and only my second technical trail, but it was totally worth that view at the end!

Its amazing what a stock Jeep can do! I've been wheeling my Sport Unlimited for some time now and when I get into an obstacle I just two foot it and that seems to work. When I go for a re-gear I may add a rear limited slip but honestly for the wheeling I do. I don't feel the need for a locker. Thanks to the amazing Footage!! 😁

My wife and I did this in 2016 with her 2007 FJ Cruiser with a cheap 3" spacer lift and 33" Nitto Terra Grapplers. No skids, no sliders, no winch. Probably the roughest trail we did, and then we drove it back to Iowa, and never had to turn a wrench. I miss that tough little Toyota!

I live in the PNW with a stock '97 XJ, junkyard fab lifted on narrow MAXXIS RZR 33's. It, of course, is a work in progress. I really enjoy finding lines through hard trails. It is always my goal to have the rig that doesn't look flashy and super capable, but have a ton on fun on a narrow budget. Thank you for showing that 40's and a mega budget are not necessary to go have a great time.

From what I've seen and some math I did on some vehicles from videos... If you're about 30° approach, 25° breakover and 30° departure or more, you should be able to do it in my estimation. Probably the only stock vehicles that would do this would be 2 door Jeep Wranglers (preferably Rubicon) , new bronco sasquatch and Land Rover defender 90 or 110. It has to be a TOP stock vehicle to do it I think it it's going to be stock. Cherokee Trailhawks with 2 inch lift or more and true 32s can do it (255 75 17). I agree with the 35 inch tire recommendation for 4 door Wranglers. 35s and a 2 inch lift puts a 4 door Wrangler pretty much equal to a 2 door Rubicon Wrangler. You probably don't need front and rear lockers if you have BLD though.

I took my stock JK down Kane Creek in Moab. I had 33 inch tires and had never been down a trail like that, and probably shouldn't have been but I had my grandson with me and one we were in it then there was no turning back. We had a blast and I can't wait to go back.

I did this trail 7-8 years ago in a 2009 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with a 1" leveling kit. It had the 20" wheels too. It wasn't easy then, but it looks way harder now than I remember it. There was one new bypass at the time that turned out to not be much easier than the ledges being bypassed. I do remember a bunch of Jeep guys at the top who were in disbelief seeing my truck up there.

I’m thinking about going in my 09 1500 crew (6” lift 35s) how difficult is it while using bypasses (I’ve got to drive it back to South Carolina so not looking to break anything) I’ll probably scout it out with the dirt bike the first day

My son and I did this trail last September on our way to Blazer Bash in Moab. My Blazer is on 4" lift with 35" tires, Detroit tru-trac up front and open rear. We did the east side on the way down. I was warned about the trail getting worse than in years past when my buddies did it. We did it without any damage but it was a long slow ride. We camped off the side of the trail below where the two sides merged. Your video shows the true roughness of the ledges and steps going up and coming down. Looking back on your video I'm actually kind of surprised we did as well as we did. Might be the smaller tires you both were on. I wouldn't do it alone again that's for sure. We pushed our luck on that point.

Did this trail with my brother in my stock 2015 jku sport. Including the east loop in the dark with nothing but a cell phone flashlight lol. Top of the world at sunset was incredible but had no no idea what that east loop had in store for us. Glad it was downhill. We took a group of friends on that trail last May and got a stock showroom TRD off road 4runner on street tires and a lifted 2Gen Sequoia to the top. Surprised the heck out of the other rigs on the trail. We did start early and on a weekday to avoid clogging up the trail as it was slow going. Nice driving y both drivers and kudos for using what you got to get out and wheel.

I have done tons of things in my 04 Grand with 33's with a stock Vari lok in the rear and TruTrac in front. Small 3" lift on long arms. Love the look on peoples faces when the "soccer mom" rig pops out of the trees on the top of the hill. Miss out west wheeling, lived in AZ during the 80's. Here in northern Michigan it's heavy trees and cedar swamp mud.

I have a video of it. Keep in mind i have 2.5" lift on 32", and i used the crap out of my rock rails and skid plates. And that was a year before Dewy ran it...it slowly gets more dug out on each of the ledges year by year.

How long ago though? 4 years ago this trail was a LOT easier. 2 years ago beat the crap out of my sliders and plates on 32" tires. I'd be wary of attempting it again now as each ledge is even more dug out every year. Unless you want to get out and stack rocks every 100ft...

Did hells revenge in my 99 xj on 31s! Definitely difficult but did it all besides hells gate and the tubs lol. On tires that small and a 3 inch lift it very much becomes a thinking man's game.

Some years ago a friend out in CO told me that technically, off-roading is not allowed. BUT, even the most remote spots and trails are still county roads, hence they can be used. True?? He was trying to get me to bring my old 2003 ML320 out to Ouray to do a run with the local Benz Club - but most of them had G-wagons. I passed. This is a good and informative vid - thanks for taking the time to put it together.

Going off trail is not allowed, but off-roading is definitely allowed. Most CO trails have true forest road or road classifications, but they’re true 4x4 trails… that might be what he was saying. Unfortunately google maps sometimes gets confused and reroutes over these trails as a result. Of course, I love making videos and I’m thankful they’re watched!

Saw the beer cans on the trail. That has caused more accidents and breakage on trails than anything else! Not to mention the littering! Now I like beer as much as anyone else, but do it at camp, not on the trail! Sorry to preach, but I have seen and heard of too many accidents caused by alcohol! I did this back in May this year in a fairly large group. I was in an X with 3" lift and 33" tires. With some good spotting from the trail lead, I was able to get up obstacles easy. We also had an older X with 3" on 31" tires, fully locked, made it no problem. Half of us went back down the way we came up, the other half went the to complete the Lollipop. We were told about the 3-4ft drops, so I went down the easy route. But after doin The Fall at Steelbender 2 days later, i'd be more comfortable to complete the lollipop at TOTW next time I return to Moab. The trail itself wasnt that exciting, but the views at the top is just Epic.

Just ran it a week ago in a stock Rubicon on 33s. Had some snow which added some challenge but it wasn't terribly hard. Ran into a group of jeeps on 40s headed up as I was back down and they were struggling more as the trail warmed and got more slick.

Hi, Dewey. The week after you filmed this, my jeep club did the annual thing in Moab. Hope you remember the Old Goat, my 2005 Jeep Liberty. Only changes is a 3 inch lift and 31 inch tires. The Goat walked right up to the top of Top of the World. Did have to make one trail repair, had to replace a fuse! The Goat then came back out on the east side. WOW. But he made it without any trail damage or winching. Unlike the CJ2 that broke an axle and two wranglers who had breakage. Thanks for the memories. Karl.

I did this trail on 31s in the snow and the dry. Everyone acts like you need 35 inch + tires to get out and have fun. None of it is necessary unless you’re doing the absolute hardest trails.

Pretty much. Basically you're supposed spend 10's of thousands of dollars to build your vehicle so it just rolls over everything without ever touching any of the skid plates/armor. Many people overstate what is required for a particular trail. Not all, but many.

2 doors can take lines and even avoid stuff the 4 doors can't. If you're trying to decide between a lift and a locker, a rear locker will generally help a stock Wrangler more than a lift.

Another Colorado wheeler/adventurer here. I’m a few hours south of Denver and spend most of outdoor trips doing mild trails and forest roads. We did the trail from Dewey bridge to top of the world several years ago in mostly stock Toyotas. I think many of the trails require proper line picking and less about how big the tires are.

That "bypass" used to be smooth 4 years ago...but now its harder than the main obstacle due to errosion ect. 2 years ago we had to winch a newb stockish JK up it because our lead said she should take the bypass, since the last he knew it was good...lol. By the end of the day on our run in 2020, every single person in the group was just DONE. Felt like we all had gone through 10 rounds in the boxing ring. We also went down the east side.

The reason for the 35’s and Lockers, is to prevent wheel spin that tears up the trails.

Bigger tires put more surface area on a trail and potentially tear up the trails more than smaller tire vehicles. I haven’t even watched the video yet but the XJ was one of the more capable Jeeps in stock form, other than the TJ that is. I own a 03 TJ rubi on one tons and I also have a stock 2012 JK on 32’s lol as much fun as it is to absolutely thrash my wonton TJ the JK is more fun to just see what it can do. Sure it gets hung up places I used to bring my TJ when it was stock, but there’s just something about wheeling a stock jeep.

Yeah, I have a TJR, and now a JLR (replaced the JK). Stock to stock, the JL is more capable. However, if the JL was on 30.5s too, the TJ would likely outperform. Both are a blast to wheel tho… my KJ is the most fun.

@@coloradomallcrawlers that’s how it’s gotta be looked at, if the JL were down on the small little tires the old Jeeps had it wouldn’t be able to do what it does, only due to a lack of clearance. And yes I can imagine the KJ is fun to wheel! I’ve never had one but I do one one, just where I live things rust so quickly so it’s hard to find clean Jeeps used.

I did Top of the World around 3 years ago. A stock Jeep "can" do this trail, but I certainly wouldn't want to! I am lifted 2 inches with 35's (open diffs at the time) and did just fine, but I did test out my skid plates a few times. I damn near flattened my exhaust pipe coming down ledges on the way back.

He knew most of the trails quite well from having four-wheeled them over the course of 50+ years. Guys with built Jeeps were amazed at where he could go with his rig.

Wheels & Wrenches, that’s certainly not true… my JLR is remaining stock, and I’ll take it on all the trails FunTreks has reviewed (exception the buggy trails, but I’ll still cover those trails). Sure, trails have gotten harder, but too many are underestimating your driving ability and overestimating the need for a build to call yourself a wheeler!

Most obstacles have plenty of loose rocks that can be used to make a road up em if needed. I would lose the hitch sticking out of the Wrangler as when comin down it can hit and cause damage, just sayin. Great video and info. Been there twice and if you even like bein outdoors it needs to be on your bucket list

We did Top of The World maybe 7 yrs ago .... we were in a 2010 JKUR 2 in lift w/33’s. Had no problem but did take some of the easier lines. We were alone and had to be careful. It looks like it has gotten harder since we did it. Most of the trails around Moab have due to excessive use/abuse..

Yeah, increased use does impact a trail, but increased people getting into off-roading can help us save trails. This can be accomplished by joining trail crews, cleaning up trash on trails, and being a good representative of an off-roader. Thanks for watching!

If you are still stock, i would shy away from it unless you want lots of smashed fenders and rocker panels. I have a vid of this trail from summer of 2020. Rock sliders, lift, and tires is recommended. I used the crap out of all my armor, 2.5" lift on 32s.

@@mrvwbug4423 ummm never heard of these transmissions overheating from offroading...ever. Now, the PTUs (the actual 4x4 system)...those might overheat occasionally, but there are no gauses for that. But what do i know, i'm not some internet expert like you. Yep, such a POS transmission even BMW uses them...lol (or one of the larger 'nice' brands).

Gnarly stuff. Thanks for the super informative video. A bit too rough for my Ranger, but looks like a fun challenge for those brave enough/with the right rig. One video suggestion, on your pop in graphics, they get obscured by the KZbin controls, but I often find myself wanting to pause and read/look at them. Perfect example is the trail damage shown at the end. Maybe worth making them higher so they don't conflict with the controls/timeline.

@@coloradomallcrawlers woowee, the snow and ice totally added another dimension to this trail. We did it and boy was it a challenge, especially for jenn. The stock JL and I made short work of it. Right upto when I tried to pass a guy parked (who had decided to walk the last half mile, he was hoofing it back quick tho, because he knew he was in the way) and slid into him, no damage, we were lucky. The ice was something you had to be aware of at all times. Stopping was a bear and had to be planned, a panic stop could of been catastrophic.

We did the 'bypass' in our stock 2013 JK Rubicon on December 4th, 2021. Was done with and without lockers. Steel Bender...yeah...not so much. That one was tough.

I have had Red Rock 4-Wheelers tell me the trails required big tires and/or lockers a couple times years ago and we then took essentially stock vehicles up what they said was impossible. 35's and lockers? I could have told you they were full of it even before watching you run it. I have taken an old CJ-5 on trails that make this trail look like a highway. Limited slip in the rear only and 31's.

My Tacoma (stock 2019 TRD Off Road on 31s) could probably do the easier side with some good line choice, main worry would be hanging up on the hitch. I did get some funny looks from guys in built Wranglers when I took it down Black Bear pass, but other than a few love taps to the front skid plate and a few minor hitch scrapes it did fine.

Black Bear Pass is more about the driver than the rig. Any halfway capable rig should be able to do Back Bear with a good driver! A lot of stock Jeeps take every season.

It’s built for off-road. I was living out of my Jeep when I shot this so I had the camper and no where to stash the receiver. However I agree, it’s as useless as the piece of metal another KZbinr was selling to save rear window breakage. But who knows, maybe one day I’ll experience that and won’t think it’s that stupid.

Im personally running the 3.07 gears in my 99 manual xj with 32.5s, I do have the posi rear 8.25. Its not bad and helps, But will re-gear when the 8.8 swap is being done.
