If I had any hairs left on the back of my neck, they'd be standing. The finest opera singer, bar none, ever put on this planet for us to appreciate. At the end of a long, hot and stressful day, is there any better way to unwind? Haven't found one yet.

Consider myself lucky to have attended four live concerts of Kiri including the 1991 Nobel Gala Concert in Stockholm, summer concert at the Ulriksdal Castle where my husband and I sat just behind the Swedish King, Queen, & Crown Princess plus 2 other concerts. I just love her rich timbre soprano.

everything in music in my view is subjective, so now my view their are only two recordings you need of Chants' d'Auvergne one being Dame Kiri the other being Victoria de los Angeles. I came to these chants through the later mentioned sublime and then from Dame Kiri. You could argue that thir are many other fine recordings and you would be correct, but for mine these are the two I constantly go back to. cheers.

I love her, too, but there is no getting away from the fact that, as some comments below observe, her voice here in her mid-sixties was not what it was when she recorded these lovely songs in 1983/84 and a lot of the velvet had gone. Here is how she is best remembered in this music: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6nYc6hnfrqakMU

I still enjoyed it and watching the performance is part of the enjoyment. But thanks for the recording link, I bought that CD way back in the early 1990s, I was living by myself, unemployed in Wales, quite lonely, and I heard this piece on the radio. It was so beautiful, peaceful and charming I simply had to get it...So simple and light but uplifting...

I didn’t want to write it but you did. I mean the voice changes with time even when you have a great technique. But every soprano has those amazing years that no one can take away from them. 🥰

I very much enjoyed this performance on which we are commenting , but thank you for drawing attention to and sharing the link to her other performance. I understand the point you are making. The performance in the link from 83 I think it is, it’s different again, her tone is so much warmer and more full. It’s superb I hope the other people here read your comment and go listen. Thanks again

Too much vibrato - hear Natania Davrath's version that is the benchmark for this song. Such a pure and simple voice with magnificent control. This version does not come close...

Joan Hart I will take Victoria de los Angeles for any of the Chants d'Auvergne that she performed.

I'll take Dame Kiri's version...."too much vibrato" tells me you are a non singer without understanding of how the voice works.
@alger30417 жыл бұрын
To each his own - we all hear a given piece of music differently and have different necessities as far as what we wish to hear. For me, Victoria de los Angeles is the final word on these songs - she has so absorbed the genus of them that one could almost say that she is the music herself. Kiri's readings are far too efficient and too slick for my taste, but again, to each his own.

It is obvious Kiri is having difficulty through every bit of this piece. Her voice is strained and shallow thus lacking the haunting resonance Bailero is suppose to have. Perhaps a bit of voice therapy at AVA may help Kiri regain control of her delivery and not her audience. The orchestration was good as the conductor kept the proper tempo rarely heard when hearing a performance of Bailero.

Not so obvious to me and I enjoyed it too - I don’t have much of a musical ear anyway.
