I'm sorry but the whole students using cheap supplies is usually a given. most students can not afford certain supplies, also It's not the supplies that determine the quality of their art.

On the other hand of professional pencils, if you aren't planning on having this be your main medium, shouldn't you stick to a less expensive brand like Crayola and try to really develop the skill? I'm speaking of personal art, of course, not works to be sold. Always go for good quality then.

A 24 pack of Primsacolor is only $16 and is vastly superior to a Crayola.

I started with Crayola, then prismacolor, then Faber-Castell, then Holbein, then Caran d’Ache. I agree, the pencils make the drawing. The lightfast and wax oil combo’s will make sure your work lasts forever without fading. Also I can get way more layers with the high end pencils. I enjoyed your tips, especially making my own warm and Cool black. I would like to take your course, can you reply with the link. Thank you

Having good coloured pencils will not help better the way your drawing looks. All it will really do is make it look less waxy etc.
@AlexisAlexander6468 жыл бұрын
For mixing colors, I'm always scared to do that because of what the outcome might be, and how do you know if it'll look good? Because with the trees, how do you know that blue, green, and yellow will look good, but at the same time translate to a tree? It's just odd how 3 different colors can look so good together

"Quality pencil" Thats bullshit...The quality does not effect the outcome. Dont use crappy ones of course, but dont go purchase $20 or $30 colored pencils...
@thevirtualinstructor9 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Feldhacker Hi Josh. Thanks for your comment. I hate to tell you, but the quality of the materials that you use does affect the outcome of your work. Having experience with a broad range of colored pencil brands, I can tell you that cheaper brands will not give the results that you will get with better, but higher priced, pencils.
@mikaylaryan91909 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Feldhacker higher quality pencils last longer, as in the lightfastness of the pencils. Cheaper brands don't usually even have a lightfastness rating which means they will fade in a few years :D
@metatechnologist8 жыл бұрын
The problem is not usually not get something on the paper, but rather having it last. Lightfast pigments usually cost more. Sprays and other treatments are not reliable at preventing fading either. I would hope that some of the inexpensive sets could be tested at some point to demonstrate this.
@jaytamayo46947 жыл бұрын
Joshua Of course Quality matters. I know it. When I baught and used that good quality color pencil I was like "Ooooh" with a smile cuz it was my first time to use such. and that is a very well know brand. I will by one cuz mine expired and dried due to my room's hot temp. t has been for years since I baught it. But still it's useful. I infact using it to finish one work.

$20 is reasonable for a good student grade. It also is not that much. I suggest to keep checking for discounts in stores for them. I just got a $50 set of prismacolor pencils for only $20 because there was a store discount and I also had a coupon.

Well, I never really colored things in pencil, but now I was given a set of 120 professional coloring pencils by carand'ache, and I feel like I can't put it to 1% of the possible use. The tone range is just crazy. I'm going to be practicing a lot of pencil coloring now I guess xD
@ShayyLovesSoup8 жыл бұрын
+Francisco Ferraz Omg you have carand'ache?? Sweet those I want to get so bad (the Luminance ones if that's the set you're talking about) but they are so flip flapping expensive.

ShayyLovesSoup The set I have is the Supracolor II Soft. Luminance boxes only go up to 76 from what I found online. Mine is 120.

That's still great though, you should work with them more, I think you'll grow to like them. I'm in the same boat as you, I was gifted a set and they are really great but after first opening them and using them I realized I didn't know a thing about how to work with them. This summer I plan on working with them a lot more too. I wish you and I both luck on this quest lol
@franciscoferraz67888 жыл бұрын
yeah! thanks, good luck for you as well. I hope I do come to like them more. Biggest problem I have right now is that I don't have patience to take the time painting all the layers in.

Visually maybe. But that doesn’t mean the end product is archival and lightfast. Which can’t be sold to someone. Professionals sell their work usually. Can’t sell works that are made from low quality, low pigment materials.
@Yin6985 жыл бұрын
i sold an artwork made with low quality pencils before. the client was disappointed because the colors faded in months.
@joeblankenship3775 жыл бұрын
If you're serious at all about working in colored pencil, you can scrape together $16-20 for a 24 or 36 pack of Prismacolors. The difference in pigment and smooth laydown between a Prismacolor and a cheap colored pencil is quite dramatic, and it's worth spending a few extra bucks.
@stephenfranciosa78764 жыл бұрын
Agreed, however I will say, there are certain cheap brands of drawing utensils that can "cut" the paper; perhaps the density of their pigment or whatever the material is made of is different than higher quality. I have some shitty materials and while I know I can create great things with them, I would never use them over the better options. And we are not talking about that much different in price. A great colored pencil might go for $1.50-$3 and lasts, I dunno, quite a few drawings depending on the style, whereas a shitty pencil could be nearly the same price.

Interesting video although, I believe, you are doing your viewers a disservice by telling them to use artist grade products. Isn't the first key to learning any new skill to learn the fundamentals? Which is where I am. I'm looking for fundamental of drawing. I hope that is something you have to offer. Thank you for sharing 🌷🌷
@thevirtualinstructor5 жыл бұрын
Hi Coloring, Thanks for your comment. I actually think the opposite. Cheap colored pencils cannot perform to the level of higher quality pencils. If you use cheap colored pencils, you're likely to believe that you cannot produce great results because of your skill - when the pencil itself may be to blame. With some art products, student quality materials are fine, but with colored pencils, this isn't the case. Colored pencils vary greatly in quality and in this case, you get what you pay for. All the best to you in your artistic journey.
@coloringwithd5 жыл бұрын
@@thevirtualinstructor So I want to make sure that I have your information correct. Using student grade materials in other mediums is fine, but, not with colored pencils, even though student quality generally means less than artist grade but a step up from a children's product. I'm asking because I want to know how this affects my addition of watercolor and acrylic.

I disagree with the quality of supplies. I've created some of my best work with a maximum of 10 cheap school crayola pencils, since my Prismacolors where stolen. It also presents a good challenge
@Fynx1238 жыл бұрын
if I were to start out using Prismacolor premier pencils matter if I buy the 12 pack or should I buy a bigger one for more colors?
@GrannysWanderingSpirit8 жыл бұрын
My suggestion would be that if you would just like to try a brand or two or three to see if you like them, buy a pencil or two of each (most fine art stores sell them individually). The problem with buying a 12 pack, is that if you really like a brand, you will find that you want more colors, and the cheapest way to do that is to buy a bigger set, which gives you duplicates. If you only want to add a few colors, you can, of course, go back to buying individuals colors, but keep in mind that if you want to add many, this is an expensive way to do it.
