Murakami is my favorite writer. This book was one of his worst, if not his worst. The reason for this is the whole plot is so lame and unbelievable and all his problems could have been solved with a couple of phone calls. I was just watching the review of "The city and its uncertain wall" which excited me, however reading that you consider this novel to be "a remarkable story" casts a shadow of doubt over my excitement. I have read all Murakami's work except for the latest. I enjoyed them all apart from KAFKA ON THE SHORE, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki, and his book about music which was the only book of his that bored me so much , I couldn't finish, and music is my obsession.

Thank you for your comment! I think we should all appreciate that we have different tastes which grants such a vast variety of different stories and interpretations. In my initial read I made the same question of "Why is he not simply calling his friends?" but later realized that this is actually a point: He needed a catalyst to face his past in a different way as the simplest way seemed too difficult for him. Please don't let your excitement for "The city and its uncertain walls" be effected by my opinion on Tsukuru Tazaki. These books are very different and Tazaki met me at a time where I was quite sensible for this kind of story.
