Well. Mystery solved. I bought the version with blank pages. The little clips are to hold the supplied sheet with lines behind the page. And the paper handles the crazy Noodler's ink I use without the smearing I get in my adored Black 'n Red. Thanks for your recommendation. You are now 2 for 2. The wing sung 601 is great. Another wing sung, the 699, is so cheap I can get one for each color ink. That would be rough using an original pilot 823.

@@DrDavidMLevy Hi David, thanks for letting me know! I can see those magnetic bookmarks being very useful for holding a guide sheet in place. The ruled version (for obvious reasons) does not come with a guide sheet. I am glad to hear you like the Nebula Note. It is definitely a new favorite for me.

I want all reviewers to tell me how many people they know who write in books with Sharpies. It’s absolutely clear they will bleed, just like Baystate Blue will. So why bother? Just no point testing it. Apart form that, great little review, thanks! Nice 1 🙂👍🏻 I would have liked to have seen some fountain pen writing with a couple of pens but that’s cus I like seeing it. 😂

Hi Richard, I appreciate the feedback. I do understand your point on the Sharpie. The Graphilo notebook I reviewed did hold the Sharpie ink comparatively well. A Sharpie might not be the most useful reference but it is interesting to me to see how a paper performs. I will try and add live fountain pen writing to my future notebook reviews. That is a good suggestion.

This paper has been tough to source. Seems it’s sold out in a lot of places but I was able to pick up from riled versions at Bittner. Looking forward to trying this paper as I am one of the few who truly despises the smooth glossiness of Rhodia paper and Clairefontaine I find irritating as well. Cosmic Air Light has been an interesting alternative and I also love Midori paper, so I guess that means I like my fountain pen paper to have some tooth and texture;)

I’d be interested in seeing how white the pages are compared to other papers. I mean, is it copier paper white, Clairefontaine Triomphe white, Rhodia Webnotebook white, EndlessWorks Recorder White, or?

Also interested in knowing how much, if at all, fountain pen ink smears on the paper after it’s dry. For me, with Tomoe River, if I have any bit of sweat on my hands and I touch ink on a TR page, I get a smear, even if it’s been dry for days. This means I can’t use TR for archival purposes.

Hi Erik, it is more white than the Endless Works Recorder white. It is also more white than Black N' Red Optik white paper and very close to my bright white copier paper. I don't have any white Rhodia at hand to compare it with.

I just rubbed my fingers over dried ink on TR and the Nebula Note and I don't get any smearing. Fountain pen ink is water based though, so if your hands are wet or oily, ink will smear after it has dried because you are introducing moisture back to the ink. There are plenty of times I have touched dry ink and gotten it on my hands...really just depends on how moist your skin is.

@@BlakesBroadcast I've seen the ink on Tomoe River paper liquify just from high humidity. It then can transfer to the previous page. Highly saturated, wet ink leave a lot of dye on the surface of TR. Looks great when you first use the paper, but can be disasterous a year or five down the road.

Is there any kind of coating on the paper? Any way you could test it with sheeners?

Thank you for the comment. This paper does work well with sheeners. I can't tell a huge difference between how my sheening inks look on this paper vs Tomoe River though if I had to give a paper an edge in terms of sheening, I would pick TR because of its smoother surface. I don't think I have much interest in these notebooks. I prefer dot grid paper nowadays, and if not that squared. It helps me keep more consistent letter widths when writing. Which is of course a personal consideration that won't be applicable to everyone. But I think Leuchtturm is a better option compared to these Colorverse notebooks.

If you are happy with the paper in the Leuchtturm, then I think they are pretty hard to beat. They get all the little details right.

Leuchtturm doesn't work for me at all. It seems every pen and ink I use bleeds on Leuchtturm paper, and I don't use broad nibs. There's a new 120gsm Leuchtturm option, and it works much better for fountain pens, but, of course, you get fewer pages for the money. I understand liking dot grid, though I pray it's a fad that will die out. Dot grid does not, in any way, help make letter widths more consistent for the great majority of users. Maybe for anyone, from tests I've seen. It does just the opposite. So does squared. The purpose of dot grid is to be able to draw squares, rectangles, and other geometric shapes without difficulty. Squared is basically a science paper. Line rule, when matched to your writing size, makes keeping consistent letter width far easier than any other type of ruling. And word width, for that matter. It just does. It's also far less prone to crossover writing than dot grid. To each their own, but I suspect you haven't used line ruled paper very much because the reason it's been around for so long is purely because it's better for ordinary writing in every way than any other ruling there is. This includes keeping letter and word height and width consistent.
