Colossus / Twisted Colossus - Before & After the conversion

Twisted Colossus is one of Rocky Mountain Constructions most ambitious conversions! Compare how the coaster looked before and after in this side by side POV video!
Colossus started life in 1978 as a Twin Racing Coaster. Its track was re-profiled several times until Fred and his friends from RMC got their Grubby ;) hands on it in late 2014! Twisted Colossus opened in May 2015. Comparing the two, we don't think it will ever be re-profiled again!

Impressive clip. Twisted Colossus really highlights how RMC coasters maintain terrific speed (apart from the second lift hill ascent) throughout the entire ride. Having ridden the original, the long curves between drops really dulled the level of excitement, somewhat.

The second time around going up on the Twisted Colossus is slower so that the second car can catch up and align for a better experience. But yeah great ride.

I got a chance to ride the classic. But Twisted Colossus is pure genius. Amazing ride. One of SFMM greatest gems. Definitely a must attraction to get on if visiting the park

Thank you for posting this video of classic Colossus and Twisted Colossus. This is my forever favorite! It was my favorite them and it’s still my favorite. I wish it could have been fully restored to its majestic former glory but I would rather see it transformed and reborn into the fabulous wild hybrid that it it than to see it demolished. The spirit of Classic Colossus still lives in Twisted Colossus!

so glad this exists. I remember the right side was always working, and they never really operated the left side, but I was able to ride both at least once - thankfully. only once i remember both side operating at the same time - 2004 or so. dont really remember the experience anymore at all, so this is amazing. i love the new TC, but if i could live in a world where all 3 rides exist, i would.

Damn I remembered riding the OG version forward 2009 and backwards 2011 October. Recently I rode twisted colossus 2023 and that ride was wild like it’s on steroids. I recommend this ride any day because it’ll make your soul leave your face hahahaha

Love those comparison vids! As for the Colossus/TC conversion, I think Alan Schilke went for a really creative take with this sort-of Mobius layout. Some elements and interactions look extremely fun! It's like 2 Megalites in one. However, something feels off with the pacing dramatically interrupted by the slow green lift hill, which was unfortunately predicatable given Six Flags's usual operations. Still, finally SFMM has got a good airtime coaster :D

the operators on twisted colossus work pretty hard to get as many duels as possible and i think they do a great job! the green lift is drammatically slower than the blue side to help line up operations so the blue side can catch up. ive had a ton of rides where it looks like theres going to be a duel, and then the blue side train races in front of you 😭 theres definitely a science to it.

The left track was always that way, even with classic Colossus. I think it’s done that way to allow the train on the right to catch up. But all this time I also thought it just a way to add to the suspense to the experience.

Colossus became "painful" (I didn't think it that bad) under the neglect of Six Flags. Before Six Flags Colossus was a fantastic woodie. Six Flags historically does not take proper care of their wood coasters, thus many are being turned into steel RMCs.

That was how it was designed. The classic version had a double track with two trains running independently of each other. The twisted version in a mobius loop, it’s one continuous track and the trains run parallel on the same track. If timed right you get a beautiful racing duel. On a racing track you always get a duel although one track was always a little faster than the other

Frankly, I preferred the original Colossus vs. Twisted Colossucks. But for those of you who didn't ride Colossus when it 1st opened in 1978, it was quite awful. The engineering of it was done so wrong, and the NAD Trains just tore up the track like crazy. Colossus was down more than 50% in the 1st few months in operation, and in December of 1978 a Woman was killed by flying out of the Train on the speed hill after the 2nd drop. That hill had way too much negative G's, but also, she was a heavier set Woman and ride operators should not have let her ride because the Lap Bar wasn't locked down far enough. My Heart still to this day goes out to her Loved Ones. The original Colossus shown in the video is missing one important element. The Double Down. After Colossus was closed in 1979 after being purchased by Six Flags, Colossus was immediately shut down to undergo a little more than 6 months of being reprofiled. Colossus opened just before Christmas and it was Absolutely Awesome. New PTC Trains with the Buzz Lap Bars and Skid Friction Brakes to slow and stop The Trains. Colossus delivered the best Floater Airtime without the painful experience. And when the Trains traveled through the Double Down, HOLY SHIT!!! The Airtime was Absolutely Sick. Now Skid Friction Trim Brakes were added shortly there after on the incline leading into the Double Down and a small stretch of Trim Brakes on the last 180° right turn before the last set of Airtime Bunny Hills. This was done because The PTC Trains were faster than The NAD Trains, increasing the speeds from 57 to 62mph. They didn't kill the Train speeds all that bad, but Bill Cobb who was responsible for Colossus being reprofiled, and Park Carpenters must have done some structural engineering retweaking. Because the Trim Brakes were no longer active. That version of The Once Mighty Colossus was Absolutely The Best. Magic Mountain could have given that version of Colossus the upmost Maintenance and TLC, the same way Kennywood keeps The Thunderbolt operating like a Fine Swiss Watch. This lie about Colossus not aging well?? ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT!!!! Magic Mountain just gave up on it, and had Ruin My Coaster (RMC) Destroy it. Like I said. Twisted Colossucks 👎👎

I rode with another member of ACE and on after our 1st ride in the front of the Train, our 1st reaction was it wasn't all that. He too rode the reprofiled Colossus in 1979, and we both agreed, That Was The Very Best Version with The PTC Trains. So no. I'm not just making false statements about that piece of Garbage known as Twisted Colossucks.

You didn't ride Colossus when it had the PTC Trains with Buzzer Lap Bars, and still had the Double Down before being covered over by the block brake. The PTC Trains were much faster than the Morgan Trains which Absolutely Sucked!! The block brake also made the Trains crawl through the last 180° right turn before the last Airtime bunny hills. The PTC Trains would go through the last turn so fast that when traveling over the last Airtime bunny hills, you'd think the Upstop Wheels were going to break off from the axles. They sang so loud. And the Beauty of the whole thing, ride operators didn't enforce the seatbelts being pulled tightly. Just made sure they were fastened with a mild tug. That's when Colossus was Absolutely Awesome!!

Meh, it’s a good ride but is wasn’t worth losing Colossus for. It used to be this great big near monolithic structure now it seems almost small. The high five section which they made such a big deal over almost never happens in daily operation. Also whatever pacing issues old Colossus had was simply transferred to that mind numbingly slow second hill climb.

dirty fozzie - That is your opinion. My opinion is that almost any wood coaster is better than a steel coaster. I'm a wood coaster hobbyist. If Colossus, in it's original 1978 condition, were sitting next to Twisted Colossus and I had the choice to ride them both as much as I wanted, I would spend the vast majority of my time on the original Colossus (before Six Flags ruined/modified it in the mid 80s).
