Afrikaans isn't a white language but it isn't a coloured language either. It's a collaboration between the cultures/languages. But it does have probably 90% Dutch influence so taking Afrikaaners or Boers out of the equation isn't fair. If anyone looks up the Fresian language you will see its almost exactly like Afrikaans same as Flemish. In fact that is because the farmers in that part of Europe didn't/still don't speak proper Dutch/German because traditionally they weren't of the educated people. So that's also why the Dutch and Germans say you speak a dubbed down or old style simplified dutch because that's what the farmers in that region brought over with them to South Africa. They didn't bring academic style dutch with them. Also Afrikaans has French, German, Portuguese, Malay languages, San mixed so it's a collaborative. Just be happy it's spoken by a variety of people from all walks. Nobody has sole claim to it..

Bro, I speak Afrikaans and Dutch. Afrikaans is absolutely born of Dutch. What you should rather say is that the Afrikaans language developed in South Africa. But to imagine that Afrikaans just randomly was born in South Africa, when 90%+ of it is derived from Dutch is silly. Yes, I know, it seems difficult to understand at first, but I promise you, once you get the main few differences down, you'll be reading in Dutch in no time. Why? Because Afrikaans developed from it. And good thing, because it sounds better. ;) (Ja, sorry jongens, maat het is waar.)

@boeloevanboeloefontein5 жыл бұрын
The reason for our language sounding like a “little kid of 3 years old” is simply because we simplified the grammar and phonology (as well as the orthography) and added double negatives (which came, I think, from French). Also our vowels work differently and our vocab is noticeably different, e.g. We don’t use C or Z outside proper nouns, nor do we have the Z sound except in those same instances. Our vowels also function slightly differently and we only ever roll our Rs. To me, modern Dutch sounds like like a semi-Americanised Afrikaans-German creole; especially since you use Sch rather than Sj like we do.

People are confusing some many different issues in these comments. If you speak in terms of language roots, then sure Afrikaans has dutch roots. However you can't claim coloreds can't speak it because it is not "their" language or that they should speak something different, because it is a "white" language. For them it is the natural language. It is a language part of their history and culture. You can't deny them that. That is like denying somebody their whole identity. People don't really understand language. There was no such thing as dutch language when the Afrikaaners came to South Africa, because there was no such thing has the Netherlands. Before the dutch declaration of independence from the Spanish in the 1600s there had never existed a country named the Netherlands. All the European languages we talk about today such as French, German, Dutch etc are entirely modern constructs. People spoke a wide variety of dialects in Europe and it was hard to say where one language ended and another one began. Dutch like English, German, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic etc is all a form of germanic language. As countries have created borders different local variations have become emphasized. E.g. Germans living close to the Netherlands would speak very similar to dutch people, but as generations passed, national school systems, government, radio TV etc would gradually forge a sort of language unity. We we think of as German today is really just the type of German they used to speak in Berlin. What we think of as French is what they used to speak in Paris. For practical reasons a nation state could have school books and literature in a million different dialect variations and so they standardized, which caused speech to become standardized within a border over time. A language is a living and breathing thing always changing, evolving and getting influenced. Afrikaans is a language which got created in Africa by many different kinds of people. And so people who live there should have a right to claim it as their language.

Good points. It's important to stress how in continental Europe many people don't speak the pure version of the language but have regional splits of the language. In Britain less so, but on the continent it's important to adapt to the local way of speaking. In Switzerland people will speak to foreigners in High German but revert to local Swiss German (and there are many varieties!) to speak with each other. Kind of like Afrikaans. Regional Coloured Afrikaans has many differences to standard Afrikaans.

@lukeozade99573 жыл бұрын
@Samuel Amwele how are you lost. If you immigrate from one point of the continent to another you are a immigrant. Khoi and san who are indigenous to south africa looked and sounded nothing like the Nguni people from north western africa that would immigrate to southern africa and split into the bantu groups (approximately a 7 700 km trek). Let me use europe as an example. if people from turkey trekked to say britain, they would be considered immigrants eventhough turks are also european. Because unless you don't know entire continents don't harbour just 1 universal culture right? My point is people say afrikaans isn't a native african language because they don't know what native means when it comes to language. Yes afrikaans people aren't native to southern africa but the language is. Let me explain why. Someone or something is considered native if they were the first to either arrive their, evolve there or if something unique to that country developed there. So on all 3 points the Khoi and san match all 3 boxes. Our primate ancestors arrived in southern africa and evolved into humans some left up north and spread out across the world but the khoi and san ancestors stayed thus they evolved in southern africa, and their culture was unique to southern africa. Bantu and white settlers only tick the last box since both out ancestors moved into northwest africa and western europe and developed different cultures and evolved different physical characteristics. We both however do tick the final box that we both after immigrating to southern africa developed unique cultures and languages found nowhere else in the world other than southern africa. Thus Bantu and afrikaans people are not native people but do have native languages and culture as they both developed them in southern africa. My point was if you denied afrikaans as a language on it's own as not native you should do that to every other language in south africa apart from khoi and san languages.
@lukeozade99573 жыл бұрын
@Samuel Amwele you're missing my point. Like you acknowledged my point of migration. And on the shakyness of calling something native my point is just if afrikaans can't be considered a native language since it was developed in and only in southern africa(not to be confused with afrikaners/boere who aren't native just like you yourself admitted every other group). Like you admitted the different Bantu languages developed in southern africa post migration thus they are considered native, so should afrikaans as it was created under the similar circumstances. And if not then the other languages that formed that was aswell shouldn't be considered native either. And as an example of why it would be seen as native. What other country speaks afrikaans and has it as a national language. No european country speaks afrikaans. The entire afrikaans language and culture is unique to any other in europe. Similar perhaps but still unique. Just like how bantu languages and culture is similar to that of the Nguni but unique because of how they were created. I personally believe all Bantu languages,Khoi and san and Afrikaans to all be Native because of their origin being rooted in southern africa. Non of us can go to any african(outside of southern africa) or european country and speak our language and be surrounded by people that speak that exact language. It's that simple. The only national language i don't consider Native is English as it didn't develop here like all the others and didn't undergo major fundamental changes to become a unique language like the others. It stayed unchanged. And of course the same goes for the multiple indian languages spoken as they also didn't undergo major change into a different language. But by your reasoning no language in south africa would be deemed native. All i did was make a point.

Afrikaans is derived from Dutch which was brought here by the Dutch people. It has evolved over the years and yes, it has adopted many new words from many languages. An example we all use 'gogga' is a San word and it is used by English and Afrikaans speaking people. It has transcended it origin and become a full fledged South African word. Not English, not Afrikaans...South African. However, no language belongs to any one nation, race or group. If you want it to be your language then it is yours, whether you are white, coloured or black. Afrikaans belongs to Africans, regardless of race. If you want to call it the oppressors language and refuse to speak it because of that then the only person who will be poorer for it is you. Learn it, claim it, make it your own. It belongs to all of us. We cannot obliterate our history regardless of whether or not we were oppressed or whether we were oppressors. Anyway, doing away with our history and wiping out the Afrikaner and his language, only mars the past and robs people of a heritage that helped formed them. Would you be as proud of being coloured or black if you did not overcome oppression? Would you have such a rich history if colonialism did not happen? Would you as a nation, have the strength of character you now possess if you had never experienced hardship? Don't get me wrong, no one should have to endure being sidelined the way so many South Africans were, but let's face it, it gave you a strength a character you would never have had had you not endured it. Besides, is there a better language for poetry. Is there a better language in which to express how overwhelmingly beautiful and powerful and glorious our country is? I don't think so. Afrikaans may have started with the Dutch, but it belongs to all of us now and it is as the blood in our veins...a part of us we cannot live without.

When you look at the relics of the Anglo Boer war you'll find that their bibles are in Dutch. The written word of the first afrikaans in the oldest surviving manuscript, which describes the basic Islamic learning, was written by the imam Abdul-Kahhar ibn Abdul-Malik in 1868. From 15 January 1876 the Genootskap van Regte Afrikaans society published a journal in Afrikaans called Die Afrikaanse Patriot....in other words Afrikaans was made suiwer, from the Ko'buis that the Cape Townships still speak today....Afrikaans is 90% dutch because my slave forefather had to speak the language of his master. In the Cape Townships unfortunately most free-slaves married the master and this makes Afrikaans our language.

My great grandma born sometime early 1900s spoke fluent Dutch but her daughter my grandma born in die 1930-40s spoke afrikaans... My point, some reason my grandma couldn't speak Dutch. Don't no why don't care. This same great-grandma was given a dutch childrens book by a family friend which was handed down to my grandma, which she probably never read. I know for a fact granny couldn't speak dutch. I have it now but rarely read it and when I do, then obviously comprehension is only about 80%. Can only read it slowly like a degenerate and some words throw me off badly to the point of frustration cause now I don't know what is meant because of 1 or 2 words in the whole sentence is inconcievable. Tracked my family history to the karoo region in western part of eastern cape province which used to be the colonial border with isiXhosa kingdoms, chiefs, etc. Lot of towns here have dutch names, not afrikaans far as I know. Moral of the story: colonization is a poes.
@JohnTerblanche-l1r Жыл бұрын
I'm white afrikaans, btw, whose family has historically been living in western parts of Eastern Cape, which as I said used to have a border with the IsiXhosa at Fish river but border moved more east along with British expansion towards the West. Why I mentioned some towns having Dutch names in EC like Nieu-Bethesda or Dordrecht is cause the Dutch colonists obviously named some of them and some of these towns were starting points for the groot trek of which most spoke Dutch hence Oranje Vrijstaat Not Oranja Vrystaat and Zuid-Afrikaanche Not Suid-Afrikaanse Republic.(afr dictionary had not yet been created) In the Transvaal as it was called by the English at the time they wanted to make Dutch the language of the courts and Afrikaans the common language in later years. Reflecting that more and more people had started speaking Afrikaans from the inception of these two republics closer to the end. Which makes sense linguistically speaking offcourse.

I feel like a lot of comments here are missing the context of this video. noöne is denying that white people speak Afrikaans too; saying that "it's is not a white language" doesn't imply that it is then a coloured language!! no - it's a multicultural language! this video partly a response to certain people with a political agenda, who insist that Afrikaans is only the language of apartheid, and that it has no place in the New South Africa™. the fact is, brown people have been speaking and writing (initially in an arabic alphabet) Afrikaans since its beginning - since before the Taalbeweging, while Afrikaners still wrote in so-called "Hoog Hollands"

South Africa has 11 Official languages. 9 of them are originally from South Africans. Not from foreiners that oppressed us. No one forced them to learn those 9 languages. Those 9 languages are what we can lay claim to. Don't come tell me that when the Dutch imposed a language on us that we did not we were unable to communicate. The same with English. Some of us were even brought over as slaves and had our native language stripped from us (Malaysian + Cape Malay) Durban has the biggest population of indians outside of India, but because they were also brought here as slaves their language is not recognised and so they to were forced to speak "the white languages".

@nich24684 жыл бұрын
It is a highly creolized form of Dutch... so that it definitely has european roots, because it is mostly intelligible by dutch speakers, but cannot be considered a “white language” any longer, because of creolization and thus has to be considered a south african language. It is like Lëtzebuergesch in Luxembourg: german roots are obvious... but it is no longer german.
@reanimationeas3423 жыл бұрын
Here is an example of why the concept of "White Language" is a load of BS. I will go with versions of French that developed in North America that is used by many ethnic groups (much like Afrikaans) Cajun French/Louisiana French is commonly spoken among Cajun French people, Native American people and African American people. No one owns that language. Cajun French/Louisiana French originated in Europe but developed on another continent. There is also Haitian Creole which is descended from European French but has major distinctions from the original language.
@njavwa28865 ай бұрын
Afrikaans is a creole version of Dutch, local words and other things were added to it but its foundation is predominately Dutch hence not an African language. All African tribes have other tribes similar to them, a Xhosa get a few words from a Luhya in Kenya, A Lozi in Zambia can speak to a Sotho in SA without much difficulty and vice versa. Afrikaans is only in one place and its only "cousin" with similar words and all is far away in Europe.

"White people appropriated Afrikaans" - it's literally just a weird version of Dutch. Last I checked the Netherlands was in Europe... you know, where white people come from. It's pretty telling that the vast majority of people who speak Afrikaans are either white or part white. Perhaps a better way of expressing that point would be to say the apartheid government politicised the language rather than to say white people appropriated it.

We were taught in school, a few years after Jan v. Riebeeck, landed in the Cape, there were so many different languages in the country that people found it difficult to understand one another. Then a certain Professor Pansegrouw created a new language, out of all the different languages, and called it Afrikaans, which nobody wanted to speak, and was called the kombuis taal. However, after some time-lapsed, it became the official Afrikaans language. So as I understand it then, it has nothing to do with any race or people, but a completely new language, of course, it has words in from English, German, Netherlands, Spanish etc. If I remember correctly, it has a bit of all spoken languages at that time. If I am not correct, please teach me otherwise, I am always prepared to learn.
@YangaNkonki3 жыл бұрын
That story is untrue. It was developed by the slaves initially and then over time the Dutch also began to speak it. The first instance of written Afrikaans is in Arabic script, as it was taught in Muslim schools to the coloured children. This was long before it was considered a language by anyone else.

As a native Dutch speaker, it’s wrong to link a color to a specific language. If I may relate the situation to Dutch, it’s spoken by every ethnicity in multiple countries (Suriname, Nederland, België, and De Nederlandse Antillen (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) We all contributed to what the Dutch language is today, and it’s especially true for Afrikaans. Afrikaans should be used to open up economic opportunities as well as linguistic ones. It’d be cool if we had like a music collab with Afrikaanse artists and Dutch artists like we already do with Surinamese, Flemish, and the ABC islands. Exchange programs etc. Like Surinamese culture in Holland runs very deep even though it’s miles away!

Keep telling yourselves that. Afrikaans is very much a white language. Over 85% of its vocabulary is of European origin, mainly Germanic, Romance or Greek. I prefer to call it Verwaterde Nederlands because the pronunciation and spelling have been simplified and it lacks the verb conjugation found in Dutch which itself is still significantly easier than French. Who speaks it is irrelevant, but ask any sane linguist and they'll tell you that it is a European language.

European doesn't necessarily mean 'white'. Spanish is a European too but Latino-American people aren't really considered 'white'. The origin of the language is mostly from Europe. Matteus 19:29 29 En elkeen wat huise of broers of susters of vader of moeder of vrou of land of terrein om my ontwil verlaat het, sal honderd keer soveel ontvang en die ewige lewe beërwe. Afrikaans comes directly from the dutch. Dutch and Afrikaans are (at least to the English speaking ear) nearly indistinguishable. It's safe to assume most Afrikaners didn't own slaves (slavery in South Africa wasn't even legal for very long if at all; the British took a very dim view of slavery even during the Age of Sail when it was a huge source of income.) because they were mostly farmers who might have a few natives in their employ (so a condition only a little better than slavery but that's a discussion for another day). I'm studying German myself, so I have some knowledge of how a germanic language works and Afrikaans is essentially just throwing English and Dutch and stirring it up a bit. And the argument that most Afrikaans speaking people aren't white doesn't help your case at all; more black South Africans wear pants as well, I assume? Newsflash; pants were invented by Northern Europeans.

Wow you are ignorant. The dutch took slaves from Malaysia. Forced them to speak dutch which over time became Afrikaans

1:19 Yeah... and dutch people should immediately stop speaking their native language for avoiding appropriation.

What i know is 5 things. 1. You must speak it 2. Understand what is being spoken 3. Write it. 4. Understand how to read it. The last two is what the colonisers could do. Our mothers cultivated afrikaans from the kitchen via word of mouth. What we didnt have was a fonetic alphabet and means to write it. That was some thing that the colonisers "taught" us. 5. PATENTING/TRADEMARKING. What does a pittekop know about thise things? Nothing. We are natives. This is where the trouble began. Everything we invent gets trademarked and that makes it the trademarkers property.. not the inventors. So in short.. We invented Afrikaans. The Colonisers Stole/trademarked it. Boere goeters.

@@peterplaatjies9267 But Afrikaans derived from middle Dutch, the difference is that Afrikaans developed in Southern Africa with contact with many people of different backgrounds, so Afrikaans is a language that doesn't belong to one race, it's a language that belongs to whites, coloured, blacks, Malays, etc. without any of them, Afrikaans wouldn't be what it is today. Although to be fair, if the Dutch didn't arrive in South Africa, Afrikaans wouldn't exist in the first place, remember that Afrikaans is a Germanic language.

Afrikaans is an African language that has deep roots in a european (white) language. More than 90% of the language is white. So I dont understand this question. South African English is also a white language. Theres nothing wrong with speaking and acknowledging that you speak a language that has deep 90% white european roots

It's mainly derived from the white languages: Dutch, French, German. Yes there's also contributions from the Malays, Khoisan, Bantus etc as they adopted the language. But it's originally derived from the Europeans. Finish and klaar. These days we don't call it a white language, it's a language for all South Africans although the majority of whites and coloureds still speak Afrikaans.

Afrikaans is a language of European origin, no one can argue with that but putting a race to a language is really stupid. A lot of people in the world speak language that originate from a different racial group. Language is for everyone. Also claiming that the white stole Afrikaans from black enslaved people is stupid. Most Colored people have ancestry from the Boers and that is why they speak the language. It's not rocket science.
