I was fascinated by the drapes around the mirrors. Very clever!!

Ohhh, Maria!! You really define just why so many dining rooms are boring!! Even as a child, through observation I began to think that dining rooms are so boring. Like you said-too much wood, too much brown, and even worse, too much Queen Anne matching furniture that people kept for decades. I truly never liked dining rooms until you have styled these. Since we rarely used our dining room, we omitted the wall and made the kitchen larger and so much more functional! It’s now 25’x15’ and we love it! Thank you for highlighting the issues that plague homeowners! Many thanks!! Your ideas almost make me want to have a dining room again, but I’ve still learned much about lamps and table/chairs! ✨⭐️✨

Haha Queen Anne furniture that's about it that's the way I should have articulated it too! Thanks for your comment!

I absolutely LOVE when folks have cherry Chippendale chairs lacquered in white or another great color! It makes the room look like a pro designed it.

I love my china cabinet that I inherited from my mom. It lights up on the inside highlighting the crystal pieces inside. The light over the table is on a dimmer and doesn't shine in your eyes at all in the first place. I do like the idea of changing up the chairs to the Queen Anne table I have. It does make for a lot of brown.

In the boring dining room, could she have kept her area rug and replaced the curtains to something "dirtier?" with blue and go with a coloured sideboard? Also, as the wall with the mirrors is slanted at the top, and the curtain rod will be straight, how do you deal with the wedge of wall at the top? Thanks.

That’s me 😂 my bedroom set is a French provincial headboard, nightstands, armoire, dresser, bought in the 70’s, but I still like it and I am planning to updated by painting it 🤷🏻♀️

Thanks. I have a hutch that I think I can remove the top portion. I can make it a sideboard and add a picture & lamps. 😊

You ware this new trendy green. Normally I thought it’s ugly. But you look stunning with that. I subscribed your channel because here is more color.

1) The yellowish beige wall is pretty and relates well to the rug! Cheaper to change the drapes, maybe? 2). Your blue glasses are GREAT on you! Your lipstick color is reflection. Great choice! 3) The sideboard is fantastic. Most people fill a sideboard too full of decor so it is then made much less useful. Add a hutch ALSO for storage. 4) Hang your dining chandelier a BIT higher so the bulbs are farther above eye level. Also use low or dimmable lights and add candles and sconces or lamps. I like corner standing lamps! 5) The real problem with those striking yellow drapes is that the color is solid and neither is that color pulled throughout enough, nor do the drapes have other colors of the room in them. 5) Be careful not to get too busy.. the focus will be on the people and the food! Also the dishes.

Yes, I would've much preferred changing the drapes to changing the rug. The walls, rug and table/upholstery all went together; it was the drapes that looked out of place.

I didn't watch this video till today. LOL that's my dining room! I was so excited. Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. One question, if i do the drapes in the dining room, do I need to replace the ones in the adjoining formal living room to be the same?

Thank you for making these episodes Maria… I love ❤them so much! I noticed something not addressed in this one, though, and that is in the dining room with the three long mirrors for which you suggested using drapes to create a window look wall, but what about the angled ceiling? Do you just ignore it and have a strange wedge over the curtains?
@MariaKillamDesigner Жыл бұрын
Yes, if they were real windows, you would still hang drapes over them. .. and it will look better when it's not an accent wall as well. Maria

I have an L shaped open living room/ dinning room. I’m going to paint but need advice! Between Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter neutral, or Wythe Blue a medium blue/ green for all walls. Would the Wythe Blue be too much color? I have cream and beige sofa and chairs.I really need HELP! THANKS!!!

The dining room with no windows is very much like mine. I have one mirror on the back wall flanked with two sconces. Now I’m thinking I need to add curtains as you recommended. Can I achieve the same look with one mirror and two sconces or should I add more? Thanks so much.

Hello Maria - I am a little confused 😅 I recently purchased my first home & I want to make smart, affordable decisions. once I identify the undertones in my flooring, do I choose a wall color that coordinates with the undertone or go opposite on the color wheel with something that compliments it? How does that work with North facing rooms vs. South facing? Or.. do I layer finishes in a complementary way, from flooring all the way to ceiling paint sandwiching/balancing cool & warm tones? For example; my flooring is a very gray/whitewashed LVP with streaks of brown, but all my walls are a very cold violet gray & everything feels very cold and slightly purple. Some rooms don’t have as much furniture, and so the largest object in the room is the floor. Do I go complimentary with paint (neutrals) or try to match what is in the flooring?

Stop CREATING spaces as they should be. Dining rooms remind me of funeral homes frankly! All perfectly spaced everything! Cookie cutter homes and lives are out! Be yourself! I love chair shapes works of art. Use different types together and watch the interest soar! Create your own space not one that OTHERS will approve of! 👏🏻

I had noticed when you had shown your dining space that you had a drop-down flooring. That is outdated and a trip hazard. I would not like that as I am 70 years old. That is a problem when you want to put your house on the market.
