The .38 Special is a reliable round, and the compact design makes it a perfect blend of history and practicality.
@tba11310 күн бұрын
Indeed. People haven't really gotten any more bulletproof in the past hundred-plus years, so outside of specialized hunting roles, the .38 Special will do the job just fine. Plus it has that 'noir detective' feel to it, and that helps a lot.

Very cool! My dad gave me his duty weapon before he passed away in 2022. Smith and Wesson .38 Model 10-5 with Detroit Police on the back strap. I bought a 2nd gen Detective Special about 10 years ago. I love it! When I was a little kid I had an uncle that was a police officer that carried one and us kids all thought it was so cool, but they wouldn't let us shoot it because we were too young. So when I had a chance to buy one as an adult, I jumped on it. Great gun, fun to shoot.

A several years ago I befriended a neighbor in my apartment community who lived at the top of the steps from me. He was in his 70s, a Navy guy who served in Korea and Vietnam. I would go over to his place with a bottle of Scotch or Gin and chat with him. I also helped him out when he was short on money by selling some of his guns. (357 Mag, Remington 30-06 rifle, Glock 19). I even bought his Remington 1100 12 gauge shotgun. One day, a week before he moved out to an assisted living home, he came to my door and told me he wanted to give me something as a thank you for all my help. Something he found in his closet and forgot about. This exact gun. One of my favorite handguns. Without the shaved off hammer of course... Great gun. Good shooter, great finish, reliable, easy to clean, my wife can fire it, great side/CC gun.

My first revolver(and I still own it) is a Colt DS-II purchased in 1996, still works yet I have not fired it since 2003 when I compared it to my Colt Magnum Carry which shoot .357 Mag/.38 Spec. on the range. The Magnum Carry gets carried from time to time due to cartridge flexibility, but the Colt DS-II has never failed.

In our long-running Intro to Handguns class (over 600 episodes so far!), the gun I use to demonstrate the revolver type is my '69 Detective Special, bobbed hammer and all. It gives a perfect opportunity to not only show a classic blue-steel sixgun, but also to discuss the issue of smaller guns versus larger. Of course, compared to a flyweight five-shooter, the DS is practically cheating, but still.
