This really is a great battlefield firearm. It actually saved my grandfather's life in wwII when his M1 jammed and he had multiple enemy soldiers around him. Great Vid man,keep it up!

Memories! In 68 I carried a wore out Remington Rand with 7 mags in NAM.. Our M-16's were jamming at an alarming rate due to chambers that were rough and not chromed; dirty ball powder, not knowing how to lube it, and the fact we fired "full auto" for extended periods didn't help matters either. The .45 was great for my confidence since I had no desire to go up against an enemy armed only with a knife. 1 in the chamber, hammer back, and safety off was the way I carried it; army protocol was dumb since, if wounded, the unloaded pistol's slide probably couldn't be racked! Yep... "old slabsides" is still my favourite auto... I have little hands and find the 9s too fat for comfort. The recoil is not a problem on the 1911..... Compared to a .44mag silhouette load in a revolver it's a pussycat... :-)

What proof is that? Marines today dont even carry side arms unless your an officer or on watch innwhich you would have to qualify to get toncarry one. and the majority of the marines ive asked said they dont even know how to shoot a pistol. Truth. Movies are movies.

In large part the 45 Auto is no longer used by the military. Worried about someone not being able to shoot one ? Better be more worried that alot can't even pass the ASVAB to get in or they are so out of shape they can't enlist.

My favorite feature of the 1911 is how it is easy and rewarding to tune for accuracy and reliability with the barrel bushing, barrel link, controls, and trigger with readily available parts and upgrades. Another good feature is that the same 230gr FMJ ball round used for practice is also a great reliable, controllable, man-stopping self-defense round. With 9mm, people's practice ammo is usually different from their carry ammo, which is kinda ridiculous if you think about it.

That was a really informational video. I loved watching it and learned so much. I am proud to say, I was at AIT training (95B MP) at Ft. McClellan, AL in 1986. We were the VERY last AIT unit to train on the 1911. The next unit, was the 9mm. I bought my first 1911 a couple weeks ago. Wish I could have bought a Colt like we had in the army, but I settled for a Taurus. Thank you for posting.

@@NerradArmy I was in Charlie 10 3rd Plt. 1985-86. Small world. We were trained on the 1911 and that was all I saw until I got on SRT at Ft. Polk in 1989. Everyone was getting the M-9 as I was leaving the Army in 1991. That's cool though, we were in the same company, small world.

I know this video is 13 years old.... but I still found it. I have always been a fan of the Colt 1911, probably because I'm a bit of a WWII history fan. I recently just bought one. I am so happy that it feels so good in the hand. There are a lot of plastic pistols out there that just seem to have a grip that is just too dang fat to feel good, and I wear an extra large glove. I want to feel like I have a good hold on any pistol if I am forced to shoot it single hand. Thanks for the video.

Don’t quote me on this but I believe there were some studies done, especially after Vietnam that showed the amount of rounds used in comparison to the amount of confirmed kills. You know “if we carry more bullets in our pistols we’ll get more hits” theory. Having been in the Army and only having a Berretta, it holds a special place in my heart, just like some of those older troops have a weak spot for the 45. Both are good side arms, just different schools of thought. Keep up the great videos.

Cool review. I think the 1911 caught my eye for the 2nd type of cool. I think it was one of the first guns I shot and found it much more comfortable compared to the HK USP that I fired along side it. Would love to get a 1911 one day. Thanks for posting!

I could not agree more. I was in the service back when they discontinued using the 45 and before they adopted the 9mm. They took away are old 45s and gave us S&W 38 revolvers while they were evaluating the 9mm. We used to joke that the 38 round would come out of the barrel and fall on the ground. We were all really pissed, we really loved our old 45s. Long live the republic.

Man, I'm 15 and I love shooting the 1911. I was in upstate New York with a couple of friends and a grandfather named "Dick". He was in WWII so we had some SPAM and ended the day by shooting his 1911. Then we did it in the dark to see the spectacular muzzle flash.

Dan Wesson is manufacturing a 1911 A2 that is an upgraded version of the military M1911A1 with additional custom features. I recently had the pleasure of purchasing one. It looks the same as the A1, but that's where the comparison stops. What a beauty. Deadly accurate too. Special Ops would drool over this baby.

It served in the military past 1985. I was in the Navy stationed on a submarine from 89-93, and I stood topside watch with a 1911 (pier watch had an 870 pump).

The 1911A1 served in the US Military much longer than 1985. We were still issued the the .45 in both gulf wars. 1911A1s were still in the Armory as late as 2000. Mostly Colts, with some Remington Rands mixed in.

Love the 1911. Great great gun all around. The government length is real accurate and packs a nice punch. Even when offered a USP I'd take a 1911 almost every time. Right now the SPG PX9105MLP is my favorite 1911. (Why oh why did I miss the limited run of desert tan?!?! *beats himself up*) Springfield makes some nice ones. Lots of companies do. Love the Kimber Custom II as well. Great video as always man!

I learned the 1911 during my army officers training in 1980. I have owned about 10 1911s since 1980, everything from garbage AMT Hardballer, to Sig TT, Colt Government, Springfield TRP, 2 Les Baers, Ed Brown SF, Soringfield Ronin, and SA Operator. I also own a DA/SA FN FNX .45 and a HK VP9 but my preferred pistol of choice is a well tuned 1911 in God's caliber, 45 ACP. I'm a Fudd so you can have all the fancy plastic pistols you got the hots for, fancy unproven calibers like the .30 Super Carry, I'll just stick to my all steel 1911. I sleep well at night with my SA Operator loaded with 230 grains +P JHP and a Streamlight TLR-1 1,000 lumen light mounted.

Perhaps the most attractive pistol of all pistols. You're right, this pistol is as American as Apple Pie. Watching TV shows like "The Untouchables" with Robert Stack and "Swat" series in the 70's with Steve Forest infatuated me with the.45 automatic by its sleek design. I've never fired this weapon but I've fired the Glock .40 pistol. I can't wait to get an opportunity to get my 1st experience with it. God Bless American, God Bless the Republic!

It's an icon and a very good pistol. The 1911 design is the most popular design in IPSC. Although no longer the classic version but more modern double stack 1911's like STI's.

I have a Remington 1911 R1. I carry it either cocked and locked, or with a chambered round and the hammer down. The original hammer was meant for easy manual decocking.

I taught the Glock (G23/23) for many years at an academy range for law enforcement personnel. It is a fine gun to shoot and teach, but I still feel that the best combat handgun is the 1911-series. I have a .45 Springfield Armory M1911A1 and a .45 Colt Officer's ACP. I will carry either in concealed carry with no problem. If you want to carry one, then get "hardwired to the 1911" first through training in it's safe operation.

The .40S&W actually rose in popularity because the FBI did a study and found that the most effective overall round was the 10mm, and suggested that that weapon should be carried. 10mm weapons and ammo were hard(er) to come by, so many agencies went with .40S&W due to the similiarities between it and the 10mm, and the high availability of the weapons and ammo.

Absolutely! Truth be told, the 45 ACP has moderate and gentle recoil. The myth that still lives on to this day in some circles that the .45 has a heavy recoil originated back around WW2 when the pistol training standards were pretty mediocre. They we're taught pistol shooting using pretty awkward positions. And with that, the .45 1911 went with a reputation among lots of GIs as an uncontrollable and inaccurate pistol. Heck, even I used to fall for that myth, but then I learned proper gripping and recoil control. And for people who think the .45 ACP has a much bigger recoil than the 9mm, they're actually quite similar in recoil. Muzzle energy levels are very comparable. Both recoil moderately and gently. The only big difference is that the 9mm has a much faster and snappier kick due to it's higher velocity and pressure, the .45 has a much slower kick due to it's lower velocity and pressure which can give the illusion that it has much more recoil than the 9mm.

@igor šajinović The Beretta 92 has the barrel way higher above the hand than the 1911 and even though it shoots the little 9mm round the recoil is more unpleasant than the 1911, with a lpt more muzzle rise..... You are right. the 1911 design is far better. If one really needs more capacity, then a 1911 in .38 Super will do the bizzo... :-)

Start with a .22 Rimfire pistol. Revolver or semi-automatic doesn't really matter, as it is a matter of preference. Get lots of trigger time and take some gun courses. Most of them are pretty affordable. I started with a Browning Buckmark Camper, with the full bull barrel. It's one slick shooter. After I feel like I am a decent shot, with good habits, I'll graduate to a 9mm 1911 or a Browning Hi-Power. Good luck!

I've a m-1911 mnf. in 1917,still shoots great,I beleave it was brought home and kept put away for decades.My best shot with it was a squrriel at 20 yds.all origanal but the grips.

You can get a good quality 1911 from companies like Colt, Springfield Armory or Kimber for about $600 to $700. You could go up to about $1200 or $1300 for a full spec model or go from $2000 to $4000 for a semi or full custom pistol.

I realize that you produced this video five years before I watched it. When I dressed in green, I was issued and I carried an M1911A1 made by Remington Rand. You noted that Remington is now back in the 1911 business. Actually, Remington and Remington Rand were two different companies. Remington Rand mostly made typewriters (also valuable to the war effort) , was purchased by Sperry and now does not exist. I enjoyed the video, though!

I don't think they were complaining when they were able to bring down a close-range opponent with the stopping power of the .45. Lack of stopping power against Phillipino guerillas was the reason the 1911 was developed in the first place... GREAT VIDEO

Sootch00 Just so you know, it is really hard on the frame of the 1911 and most autos to drop the slide on an empty chamber. The loaded round feeding into the chamber acts as a shock absorber slowing the slide speed as it feeds. Nice Vid though hope it gets some younger shooters interested in the best handgun design ever conceived.

Ah...1911. I wish I had one of these. When I was a kid I saw a picture and schematics of this pistol in an old gun book my father had. I just went "Wow!", there was just something about the ergonomics that made me think "Boy! That's a damn nice gun!".
