Columbia Taal's mission is to promote awareness of South Asian dance, culture, and the arts. The organization serves to establish a forum for fusing classical South Asian dance with other dance styles, especially by being open to all members of the Barnard/Columbia community of any and all dance backgrounds that are willing to collaboratively choreograph and perform fusion dance. The team typically performs at various events and showcases to develop a strong identity on campus and in the intercollegiate dance network, as well as hosts Columbia's largest intercollegiate showcase, Naach Nation. This year, we participated in the Origins Classical Dance Championship (specifically, the Samasana, Suhasini, and Tu Bhi Nachle competitions).
Our performance puts a twist on the film Gully Boy to tell the story of a “Gully Girl” who tries to escape her lot in life through pursuing her passion for dance. It incorporates various dance styles (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam) throughout and showcases the exploration of dance by the protagonist, highlighting the role of community and art in lifting people up from their circumstances.
This past week, we hope you enjoyed watching the fusion dance teams that share in our mission. We wish you a happy and healthy spring and summer 2021!
