Oh yes, this expertly crafted scene shows exactly how each trick is done if you only watch closely. Keep practicing kid.

I am not an expert on magic but as I know most tricks are as well pretty simple and silly, the job of the magician as I understand is to distract you and hide it, make you thing the trick should be something more complex. (For example here the kid "taps" the deck, that distracts you and may makes you think the trick is related with that).

That's the svengali deck. It's actually a pretty funny joke, Tommy is calling the other kids smucks, but he's using the exact deck they are being sold. Every other card is the ace of diamonds and they are slightly bigger than the normal cards.

It's sad when a tv show rips off a scene from one of its earlier episodes. Columbo visited a magic shop in the 1976 episode "Now You See Him" and had the Guillotine gag played on him.

What's really sad, is people watching so many reruns of 44 year old TV episodes, that they can remember, and compare specific scenes to others. You should get out more. Real life is a lot more entertaining.

Ah the old finger guillotine. After the kid says nice and sharp (and right before Columbo says I want to thank you for that) you can hear the background noise of the guillotine going up. That's the kid with his finger in the hole and pulling up on the guillotine. When you pull up on blade rather than cutting down after you initially cut down on something and made a cut, the blade is in the flex position when it encountered the kid's finger on the pull up (the background guillotine sound you hear) vs. a rigid position on the initial cut down. Being in flex position on the pull up now rolls the blade into the opposite position of flex on the cut down when it encounters the kid's finger. That's why Columbo still has his finger when the guillotine cuts down on his finger. When it encounters Columbo's finger in the flex position now on the cut down, the subsequent cut down position of the blade is then reset back to rigid so that the party to the magic trick can then examine the guillotine and be perplexed as to why their finger was not cut off..

This whole Columbus show is only 10 minutes long. These 50s shows were too short and in black and white. TV was new and the TV sets were too small to hold a longer show.
