There were many people who thought they could intimidate Columbo, but they did not realize that being the stellar veteran investigator that he was, his bosses supported him in everything he did. Take it upstairs all you want, but in the end Columbo will have his way, because he is right, murder is within his purview. Heck, he even took down an obnoxious overbearing deputy police commissioner.

That's certainly how I am and I put it to good use when I was in the army. All of the people who outranked me would always blow up over nothing and, just a few times (it's best to never overuse it and certainly never on the same person twice), I would reply calmly, "Shout all you'd like; you'll never be louder than me."

Columbo would feign being a bit forgetful or distracted to throw people off, to get their defenses down, but he didn’t hesitate to let them know that he was a homicide detective who knew his stuff. That was a point of pride for him. 🧥🔎 😉

It's quite rare at the start of a case for Columbo to basically say 'I can tell they're lying'. But the more Columbo I see, the more I think it's hinted in most episodes that he simply smells a rat on the baddie even before proper evidence appears. He's like a living lie detector, which adds another layer of dark satisfaction to watching him hunt!

I’ve actually rewatched episodes to see when he picks up on the lie and what triggered his “detector”. It’s usually pretty early on. The only time he got thrown off and let his emotions get the best of him was with the movie star turned TV actress that blew up the car (and her personal assistant). He was smitten! But even then he knew something wasn’t quite right; just ignored some obvious inconsistencies.

I think you're onto something here. Because I've read somewhere that a homicide detective wouldn't be called out for a kidnapping case. Obviously, this was done for plot-related reasons. But it's clear that Columbo smells something amiss from the beginning.

That guy in the suit and blue shirt Columbo was talking to, was he supposed to be an FBI agent investigating her husbands kidnapping? Because he sure doesn't act like an FBI agent. A real FBI agent would be just as suspicious of her act as Columbo was, that upon hearing of her husbands murder he would also question why she never asked how he was killed or where they found the body.
