Columbo was a unique police show. He didn't carry a gun, no fights, no car chases and never even handcuffed anyone but it was so interesting watching the cat and mouse game with the killers, knowing that he would prevail in the end...

fun fact: "Just one more thing" evolved as a character trait because when the creators (Levinson and Link) were writing the pilot, they had something they wanted to add to the scene - so rather than retype the page, they had Columbo return with the "just one more thing" afterthought. We can thank typewriters for this iconic line.

"You learn very well, Detective." "That's the nicest thing anybody ever said to me." -- "Any Port in a Storm" (1973) That is Columbo's super power; he avidly learns. To learn one must first recognize one might be uninformed or flatly wrong. Columbo does that without hesitation. His ego never gets in the way of admitting to himself, and to the rest of the world, that he is ignorant of the facts. This is also the reason everybody likes him, even the villains . . at first.

I found Columbo by looking for a show that would have aired when my father was the age that I was at the time. My father is 44 years older than I. Fell in love with Columbo instantly. It was really interesting to see actors that I had always known as old being much younger. Although Leslie Nielson looked the same.
@orangehornet57

Don't forget his car, cigars, and love of chili. Most of the actors were folks who usually played good people. In some episodes the murderers were more sympathetic than their victims. Many felt trapped due to blackmail and/or financial troubles. Of course, that doesn't excuse murder. Columbo remains a great show to watch. Who else bought the DVD set?

Wonderful doc, Eric. Very enjoyable. I studied the novel “Crime and Punishment” in High School and my teacher told us that the detective in it, Porfiry Petrovich, was a model for Columbo. Like the beloved Lieutenant, Petrovich toyed with the murderer Raskilnikov and played on his conscience as he unravelled the murder.
@MovieManEric
@MovieManEric Жыл бұрын
Raskilnikov is certainly one of the archetypical detectives of 19th century literature and definitely had an influence on the many eccentric detectives to follow, from Columbo to Nero Wolf to Monk and beyond. Another good, less famous one to look at is Sergeant Cuff from Wilke Collins' The Moonstone.

I understand "acting" and "scripts" and that characters are not the actors...yet..I think a lot of Colombo is Falk because of his outsized influence he was able to bring to bear on the character development. I feel like he produced idealized version (in his eyes) of himself that I admit, I love like a father. I don't care if it's real, this character meant so much to me growing up.

Being a big fan of this groundbreaking Detective show, seeing who the murderer is and how they go about committing and then concealing their crime, even today its such a fascinating thing to watch. Here in the UK they would play this in the afternoon during the weekdays at about 2:30 in the afternoon and working a morning shift we (a group of workmates who were fans of the show) would rush home to watch whatever episode was on and then discuss it the following day. I often used to joke that if i ever committed a crime and a Detective like Columbo should turn up on the scene, you're only choice of action would be to either flee to another country or do yourself in. So many great episodes, although for me the earlier seasons were the best ones, the later episodes went off in different "comedic" directions which just ruined the show, I personally preferred the more serious version of Columbo which Peter Falk did experiment with but then either he or the show's producer or writer decided to add the quirky comedy into the show which became part of this iconic character's many faceted traits. Lots of great performances from guest artists, I think everyone has their own list of potential candidates who would have been great as Columbo's nemesis, some of my list includes Alec Guinness, David Hemmings, Oliver Reed, Peter Finch, Richard Harris, Peter Cushing, Anthony Hopkins, David Warner and last but by no means least, the Late & Great Sir Christopher Lee, he would have been fantastic as a villain but we did get a guest appearance from the brilliant Vincent Price, so one Iconic actor from the horror actor's Royal fraternity is better than nothing. I love the earlier episodes, "Playback" is one episode that stands out, even though there are many others, although surprisingly the much later " Columbo Goes To College" is such a brilliantly "ingenious" written film, just as I was becoming dissolusioned with the later episodes, I watched this this gem during the Christmas holidays some years ago and it completely blew me away. The later ones were very much hit 'n miss (mostly miss for me) but my love for this brilliant show and Columbo has never wavered. We sadly have lost this fantastic actor and (Lets Not Forget ) an amazing artist too, but Columbo still lives and somewhere he's out there solving crimes, it's great that newer generations are discovering and enjoying Columbo, and others after them, just as we still are. I'm so glad that Peter Falk realised during his lifetime how much people loved him, not just in America or England but all over the world, as soon as they'd see him they would shout "Columbo"!!. R.I.P PETER, Gone but you will never be Forgotten, God Love You !! If only we could have called you back before you went for "Just One More Thing", you'd have never left!

I’d kind of like to see it tried. Like, a brand new series where a rotating set of actors would play alternate universe versions of Columbo. He wouldn’t always have the raincoat, the cigar, the dog and the car. Each player’s take would be a different character. I think it would be fascinating to see different takes on the role and see how they compare to the flawless original.

As far as I know, Columbo is the only TV series that only has one permanent character, COLUMBO, there is no other character in the series, each episode, the same, and repeated artists but in different roles. Very few characters came out in more than one chapter

There were a few steady character actors, but you’re right I never thought about it, they usually did play different characters in each episode. Best villain was Cassidy I thought.

There was a radio show called "The Whistler" and it was similar to "Columbo," you always knew who did it and you were left to see how they gave themselves away.

Ruth Gordon played an Agatha Christie type mystery writer who murders her nephew in-law. That episode made me wish they had Columbo challenged by other detective author types like Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe, Dashell Hammer - Sam Spade and The Thin Man, or Mickey Spillane, and Earl Derr Bigger - Charlie Chan.

Janet Leigh got away. Columbo knew she did it, but Don Ameche confessed. She had a brain tumor and would be dead by the time it was straightened out, according to the conversation between Ameche and Columbo. It seems she had no memory of shooting her husband, although the murder was complex. Sorry, I don’t remember the name of the episode.

Janet Leigh's character: "Grace Wheeler Willis" had an admirer in that episode, BUT, that character was: --->>>NOT played by: actor Don Ameche! It was played by, the fine actor: John Payne, as: "Ned Diamond"! Actor Don Ameche played the family attorney in the Ross Martin/Art-Dealer; &, Murderer ep; of the 'Columbo" TV series, first edition, version.

Obviously Poker Face on Peacock is a reboot or homage to Colombo but I was glad to see every episode of Columbo was on there. And sorry producers, his name is Frank. It's on his LAPD badge. Someone in the prop department asked what his first name was and sistine told them. It's on screen. It's canon.

Yes, her name is Shera Danese. She is 21 years younger than him. She was his 2nd wife and was married for 33 years until he passed away.

Shera Danese has been in a total of SIX telefilms/"episodes", 2 of them for the more-beloved NBC series, and 4 of them for the revival iteration on ABC.
