Merci for this. Columbo was his usual self, but Johnny really showed his ability. If you ever want to see who he really was, look at his last concert. It was in a home and he was almost blind, shaking and couldn't walk. They wheeled him up, sat him in a chair, put a guitar in his hand, and he said "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash", and proceeded to sing hhis songs, in the few weeks after June Carter Cash died. His voice was raoucous, and he needed water even during songs. But he sang. He acted like Tommy brown.

Cash was a competent actor. I would have liked to see him in more acting roles. He was more convincing than Elvis, anyway. His character in this was amoral, you have to say that. Yet...still felt a little sorry for him. he was being blackmailed which is a crime that is so cowardly and insidious yet perpetrators of that crime are never looked upon as hardened criminals (in movies and TV, anyway). Probably because the victims of the crime have done something equally as nasty or worse.

Carsini got away with his crime as Colombo created fruit of a poison tree evidence when he committed theft in order to aquire a bottle of Carsinis port. Without a warrant the evidence is 'a poison seed'. Colombo's admission to the theft creates a chain of inadmissible evidence that could not be used against Carsini in court, inculding any admissions Carsini made (poison fruit) as a result of being confronted by poison seed evidence. At least Colombo followed propper evidence collection in the Tommy Brown case.

You know, i love the episodes where the murderer and columbo get along more than the episodes where columbo straight up hates the guy. For me at least its more compelling when its visible that columbo doesnt actually want to get the guy, but something deep inside tells him he has to because its right. Maybe under different circumstances they could have been the best of friends, and while the investigation is going try to enjoy the moment. But you can tell with each question and every action is just leading towards his suspects down fall. You can see it in his eyes the conflict this brings. This episode and donald pleasance episodes are my absolute favorite due to the tragedy it brings to everyone involved.

Seeing Mr. Booke in this episode makes me wish even more that there could've been a crossover with The Dukes of Hazzard. Picture this- a couple of high-class smugglers come to Hazzard. They're intent to do business with the Boss, but just before the deal goes down, one pops the other. Somehow one of the Dukes stumbles across the dying one and tries to help, but then the other one gets the drop on 'em and tries to frame them. Here's a kicker- As bad as Boss wants the Dukes out of what's left of his hair, he doesn't believe for a minute that any of them are murderers. The sentiment is shared by his officers, as well as the rest of the county. Trouble is, the smuggler is a well-off snot with strong-arming lawyers who buck to keep charges up. It doesn't help that it looks pretty open and shut. Or does it? While everyone's scrambling to figure things out, up to the curb of the courthouse rolls a vintage Peugeot 304 convertible. And in a puff of smoke out climbs a scruffy little man in a raincoat. There's a pair of officers standing on the stairs. One is in a standard-issue blue-and-black uniform, and the other is in a suit, which he put on just after getting in from California. The scruffy man walks up to the two and says to the one in the suit, "Hello Enos. How're you?" "I've been better. Sherriff, this is that mentor of mine I was telling you about. His name is Frank Columbo." From there things just write themselves.

It was sorta implied throughout the episode that the guy from the NTSB was either lazy, incompetent, or a mixture of both.
