I've had the pleasure of helping a few out that couldn't read or write. Mostly older men on the jobsite, unfortunately many were my age. Seems at one point they got discouraged and gave up on it. One old guy I remember most was needing some help with financial things. For some reason he took me into his confidence. I did manage to get him on the right track with his finances. I can read and write, but I'll probably never have the small fortune that the unassuming construction laborer had. Don't let a Man's looks fool you, he was wealthy and you'd never have known it. He earned every bit of it from hard work and savvy.

A lot of people in Small towns couldn't read. A very few just didn't have the ability. But most had to start working on the farm at 10-12. Some even younger. A lot of dad's figured they couldn't read and got by. A mule don't have a book stuck to his Asspine. No time in a saw mill to read. Math yes. But you learned that cutting boards and counting money.

I grew up listening to great pickers and singers like the Man in Black. We had a stereo of course but when my friends showed up on the big patio out back they DIDN'T forget their instruments. It was kind of like going to Leon Russell's house when someone asked "I see guitars on the wall what do you play good music on?" And have him point at piano! I'm from Tulsa too.

Well that one snuck up on me. I've always felt shame not being able to concentrate enough to read and the skill to spell correctly. It's only in later years recovering from an illness that I discovered the wonderful world of words. Alas, I still get confused when under pressure or just simply comprehending the words that instruct and or explain tasks. Mathematics was my passion but English comprehension was my nite mare. It's a hard thing to come to terms with.

@deadmanwalking, it's called dyslexia. I have had the same problem for years. It's just how i was born. Now that I'm older it's better, but school was so hard for me. I still have to look up words to be able to spell them correctly. It's so frustrating. Like I said, if they would start out teaching children how to read and spell without timing them...they would do a whole lot better. They wouldn't lose thier confidence in themselves and they would prove they can learn just like everyone else.

It's not just literacy. It's dyslexia. It's something people are born with. You can't change it, but what can change is elementary schools need to stop timing children when they're trying to learn. They barely understand the lesson long enough to learn it for a test then they move on and the child has forgotten all about what the test was about. Our government just doesn't get it. I know it's easy for some children, but children with dyslexia has such a hard time in school. It's embarrassing for them when it shouldn't have to be. There needs to be schools for children with dyslexia. No timing. Just let them learn at thier own pace. It would make a world of difference on how thier lives turn out. It would help them in the long run. This was a great movie . I've never seen it before now.

As a former educator, I have seen my fair share of high school kids that couldn't read or write. I set out to remedy each situation I found. If not by me directly. The most vital skill a human being can have is their ability to read and write. It is a hard cold world out there and it scared me to death to think of some of the kids I had that couldn't. The hardships they would endure, the opportunities they would miss out on, and the advantage that others would take over them. My grandmother instilled the power of being well read when I was growing up. She would drop me off at the library when we went to town as she ran errands. I could go anyplace and learn about any subject in peace, quite, and comfort in that library. I miss those times and I miss my grandmother.

There is difference in being 'illiterates' and 'knowledgeable' world would be surprised to know how illiterate these so called academic degree holders are, with closed minds, formal education doesn't make you 'literate' it only adds on some skills in you, The mind which grows even with minimum of formal education grasps the world around and progresses in its understanding of what and why and forges ahead in its empathy compassion and kindness, the characteristics which endears you to others, all of earlier sages scriptures writers were not so called formal school college educated, yet their writings have written eternal truths of human life which still holds true today and you think these leaderships with their fancy colleges Harvard to Cambridge to others institutions have any understanding of public life? how public offices should be governed? what is most important thing to be done? reforms changes to be included as time passes by and life changes with machines? that 'illiteracy I' have always meant with contempt of so called college university degree ones, who should know better with those degrees but they do not and everything gone into chaos out of control.
