Love the last desperate attempt by Vaughn to exonerate himself by admitting that he planted the glove. But he was left speechless when Columbo asked him why he would do that.
@KalOrtPor
@KalOrtPor 2 жыл бұрын
He could've tried to say he had been picking up on Columbo's innuendos and was just paranoid about being accused next, or claiming with all the evidence pointing to Harrington seemingly being ignored he thought he was being a good Samaritan getting them back on track. Really though, the mistake as with most of the well-to-do, alpha types on Columbo was falling for the trap and believing their own hype. It was too late anyway, Columbo already had it all pieced together.

@@KalOrtPor yeah, if he were a bit faster thinking, that would probably be the last ditch attempt at a defense... but as you said i think it's too late, and i don't think any jury would buy it. if someone is innocent, it sounds crazy to sabotage evidence to try to incriminate someone else in such a way that you incriminate yourself if you're caught.

Had he not, the case would be thrown out later and the murderer would have got away. Well worth risking evidence to catch the killer, and not needed when you've got a captain who can testify to the admittance of guilt. That's better than all the evidence there.
@TheGreatsagegoku
@TheGreatsagegoku Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think about this a lot. Columbo almost never has any admissible evidence for a trial, a good lawyer would tear down half his cases if they went to court. I think he has a different tact which is pestering the guilty party and unraveling the thing so much in their mind that they can't help admitting what he shows is plainly obvious, finally allowing their guilt to show through. It's an odd cathartic release for everybody, the sort of thing you usually only get in detective shows with carefully written plots and specific emotional beats. In real life its like trying to win every fight by knockout.
@Cowcow211

@@TheGreatsagegoku @sundaeExpress Columbo gets a confession from his suspects. Although it's never made much of a point in his episodes. The one in which he identifies a suspect through spoiled wine you hear him ask the person for a confession and then the one involving the fictional Arab country embassy he has the Ambassador sign a confession, although that one is more dodgey as it could be argued it was signed under duress.
@DesignIncase

@@TheGreatsagegoku One thing I notice is Colombo likes having witnesses around. So in court they'd have to explain their actions/confessions. Also I'd also assume the DA would take a plea as opposed to having this all go to trial.

Of course it was a bluff, but the murderer is already so nervous at this point after Columbo has worn him/her down systematically, plus the fact that they finally discover that Columbo was faking incompetence all the time, that confessing is basically a relief. That's the whole point.

Took me a while to work out who 'Gelt' was. Then I remembered an old sci-fi movie I saw on the telly during the 1990's, a sort of space version of the "Magnificent seven", with Robert Vaughn as Gelt and the A-Teams George Peppard as space cowboy.

And if they'd only found powder marks on the gloves it wouldn't prove that Harrington had did it, merely that the gloves had been used when firing a gun.
@jeremytewari3346
@jeremytewari3346 2 жыл бұрын
@@lewisner Well it was less that it proved Harrington did it and more like it could've sealed the case. If Harrington ws guilty, which every other sign pointed to, the gloves HAD to have been somewhere, and if they couldn't find them Harrington had to be innocent. The thing is, they never would've been able to convict Danziger either, but Columbo freaked him out and he got sloppy.
@lewisner
@lewisner 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremytewari3346 Harrington could have dumped or destroyed the gloves then all the evidence would still point to him. Finding the gloves with powder marks would only prove that somebody had used them to fire "a" gun.
@jeremytewari3346
@jeremytewari3346 2 жыл бұрын
@@lewisner No but the issue was given the time Harrington had, it would’ve been impossible for him to dump the gloves, plus the gun was on the boat, so if he tossed the gloves why not the gun? The crime was impossible without the gloves, so unless they found them, Harrington could not have physically done it, which meant it had to be someone else, which means it could’ve been traced to Danziger
@lewisner
@lewisner 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremytewari3346 the gun was a prop and would be missed if it was ditched. The gloves could have been flushed down the toilet or burnt in the engine room. Either way , finding them simply proved that someone used them to fire a gun. Flimsy evidence at best.

Columbo makes me think of that "Come Together" song by the Beatles. He gradually becomes more and more of a "thorn" in the side of the killer, with the final part of said song representing just how stubborn, difficult and complicated Columbo becomes for the killer - making their alibi increasingly difficult / complicated to maintain and frustrating the hell out of them! 🤣
