I love the subtle shift when he's "on". That brief pause when he enters then just starts going into "Detective mode". He doesn't even finish dressing before he goes to examine the body. He forgets that he's at sea and other moments when the captain and crew have to bring him down to Earth. All that matters is the crime and the clues. No matter what airs he puts on, Columbo is a detective.

At 8:05 the look Columbo has is wonderful. You can just about hear the thought he has in his head . . . "Well, whoever's in that room is the killer, so while you guys do all of that with the victim's body I'll just slink on over to the next room and start working on my suspect."

To be fair he needed a way to stay in the infirmary for his plan to work out. The funny thing is that trying to incriminate the pianist is what got him, if he had just thrown the gun and the gloves to the sea he would've gotten away with it, there would be no proof linking him to it.

What made Columbo latch on to Danziger (Robert Vaughn) as his main suspect was finding that feather near the ships hospital. He knew hospital beds did not have feather pillows, so the only way it could have got there was whomever shot Rosanna Wells through the pillow in her cabin let feathers fly everywhere and one stuck to him and eventually fell off near the hospital. This episode is also referenced in the Ricardo Montalban episode "A Matter Of Honor", where everyone in Mexico heard about how he caught the killer on the Mexico bound cruise ship.

Columbo was focused in every single episode, all except the Faye Dunaway character. He was a little bit distracted it seemed whenever he was with her. Mrs Columbo would have been a little bit jealous over that. But than again, no one knew if she had a jealous bone in her body. I remember Columbo commenting on how tough the case was. Dunaway was pushing that apple in front of Columbo's face, but Columbo was not taking a bite! Columbo was always in control, but he was not a total control freak with women. He knew his limitations, and kept everything respectful, and professional. Italian women are beautiful. I met one who gave me her business card when I was younger. I never called her. Six months later I go to a co-workers bachelor party, and guess who is the stripper? Here's the funny part. I had more baby oil on me than my co-worker. She must have remembered me pretty well. Everyone was asking me what was up? Why was that stripper rubbing on me more than the dude getting married? She never said one word to me, just let her body do all the talking for her.

@@henryolague419 That was a joke! Kate Mulgrew and I are the same age. That means when the series started, she and were in 9th grade or so. That means Columbo must have married a child bride since he started referring to his wife from the beginning. The network got such a backlash at the casting of such a young woman as Mrs. Columbo (I think Kate and I were in our mid to late 20s when the series started), that eventually the series changed names and dropped all reference to Columbo.

Not only did Columbo have no access to the lab guys or proper forensics equipments - he also had no legal authority. He only had as much free rein to talk to people about the murder or go around the ship as the captain delegated to him. We see this aspect of the episode touch off when he had to convince the captain of the need for crime scene photos, after which the crew arranged for a trusted guy to take the pics and keep it secret.

The Captain also played Sir Humphrey Tibalt in the James Bond film A View to a Kill - treated like a servant by Roger Moore’s 007 as part of a cover act and then murdered by Grace Jones’ MayDay in a car wash!
