Empire of the Summer Moon is excellent. I read it earlier and finished “The Captured” this week. Many of the same facts and stories. I am not a Native American but I have gained such appreciation for their history thanks to these two books. This home deserves to be saved. Mr. Parker’s story deserves to be more widely known. I have to admit that I did not know it until reading these books. If not for Mr. Parker then donut in honor of his mother. I hope this home is saved.

Yes this Man should sell the House. Unless His Tongue is Forked. As it it Bad Karma to Refuse 1 Million Dollars. Out of a need for Power and Control. Because His God Alone Knows Just how Many Days He has Left on Earth. This World and One More. The House is Quanah Parkers! It Must be Returned for Him to Attain Peace in this Life.

I just finished “Empire of the Summer Moon” as well. I hadn’t known of Quanah Parker, his story, or much about the Comanche tribe before reading this excellent book. To see Star House, his living physical legacy, in disrepair like this is heartbreaking. I pray the house is saved 🙏🏻

That home is a piece of American history of extreme importance. Money is set aside by our government all of the time to preserve things that aren't nearly as important as the Star House. First this house needs restored; secondly this needs restored to the Comanche nation as a museum and tribute to the resilience of Quanah and the Comanche people.

This is sad yet inspirational. I'm fairly young, so Chief Quanah Parker was my great great great grandfather. His wife Tanarsy, my ggg grandmother, was the mother of my great great grandfather Sherady. My middle name Sheree was inspired by him. I promised my late grandfather to re-connect with this part of my heritage, and this makes my spirit long to do just that. I do think about my history.

This also happened to me and on my reservation. I inherited a older house from my elder who it was passed down to her. Loved when I seen them say that spending money on more current and better things for the people was amazing. As I was in the same situation, people want to fix it up and make historical. What is historical is our people actually providing services and better quality of life that us Natives have been longing for. Puts my heart and mind at ease knowing others have been through this like me and also stood their ground as they made an offer and their history can't be bought or negotiated with.

I have been here in Cache Oklahoma now for about 2 weeks I have volunteered my time and energy effort and my heart and soul to getting to the bottom of why this house is falling into ruin. For a long time now there have been negotiations to create a nonprofit organization for the benefit of the preservation of this house and for the eagle Park in Cache Oklahoma but none was ever able to be completed because the owner saw that the people with whom they wanted to incorporate argued among themselves frequently. this caused them a great deal of trepidation... and caused a bit of a stalemate for far too long... so the new news is they are intending to create a small not-for-profit Corporation with a three-person board and one director. .... this will now move us all forward and give us the ability to write to ask for Grants and to try to get contributions for the preservation of this National Historic treasure.... We welcome and invite all interested parties to please contact us at the Trading Post in Cache Oklahoma for further information on how you can help and where to donate... Additionally if you have stories of Comanches or of Quanah or of his family or of his people we absolutely would love to hear from you as we are looking for volunteer tour guides and historians... particularly those with a personal first-hand knowledge of the local history of this area and of Quanah Parker and his family

I just finished reading about Quanah Parker, so I was anxious to see the Star House. I was shocked to see it as depicted in this clip. Seems to me if the owners do not have a plan on how they can save and promote the home, they need to contact someone to advise them on its wonderful potential. With a marketing plan they could make a fortune by repairing the Star House, including a museum, fort, teepees, book stores, merchandise, historical insights by the staff, reenactments, including all the available documentaries on Quanah, his parents, siblings, and the amazing story that was his life during the transitional period that almost erased the Native Americans from their lands. I would imagine a hotel and restaurants would be part of the vision of a destination attraction. Short of that sell or give it to the tribe - to do nothing is a waste of a historical site that few can match - good luck and thank you for making an attempt to save it.

I fully concur, Ray and David, excellent suggestions. The history behind this house is too important to be allowed to be neglected, the house and property allowed to rot. I'm unimpressed with the current owners. Sad, it should have never fallen into their hands. If they didn't have the money to refurbish this historical gem, they'd no right to purchase it. I'm just rereading Empire of the Summer Moon by SC Gwynne. It's a great read, incredibly well-researched and beautifully written. The Comanches were some of the most fierce warriors, the finest horsemen of their time, which gave them the advantage over all other Indians and European settlers. They were in the end outnumbered. They fought ruthlessly to try to maintain their @240,000 square miles of lands within Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas. They captured thousands of not only Indians, but, women and children of all races, white, Mexican, black. Quanah's mother was one of those captured, but she fell deeply in love with her captor. Her mixed-blood son was an amazing warrior, horseman, chief, and diplomat, following in his father, Chief Peta Nocona's footsteps. Quanah Parker was the very last Comanche Chief, widely respected by many including US Presidents. The stories of all their lives, their families, that important time in American history, must be paid a proper tribute.

I don't know why don't you go spend a week or two in a day of the life of Wayne Gibson maybe walk a mile or two in his shoes and you will find out for yourself Wayne is a very good man he works everyday on that place does the best he can but after all he is only one man he'll cook you breakfast lunch and dinner and tell you everything he knows about Quanah Parkers house and how it came into his family's hands ..and if you took the time to get to know him you would then begin to be better informed. Trust me. I spent darn near a month volunteering helping out with Wayne and his sister Ginger. They are fine hard-working people doing the best that they can do with what they have. I dare you to find out what a day in the life of Wayne Gibson really looks like and then you come back and we can talk... People love to talk about other people as though they know them but I do I think it would be better if you got out from behind your keyboard and went to the Cache Oklahoma Trading Post and volunteered your time energy effort and whatever else you might be able to offer to help. As for me I'm currently at the Fallon paiute-shoshone tribal reservation doing what I can to remodel and restore my own family's home here on the reservation but I will be back in the next few months to Cache Oklahoma and to see once again what can be done in the meantime I invite any and all volunteers to help any way that you feel you can offer some assistance to this historic and national landmark

Wayne being a good person is completely irrelevant to what should be done to preserve or restore this historical home. Saying hateful rude words does not address, nor solve the problem presented here. It actually wastes time. Find a mutually acceptable solution. The property was traded in good faith, if you trade a man a rifle for a horse, and you do nothing to keep the animal well, and it becomes sick, its your problem and yours alone. If you ask for help, then you can negotiate a mutually beneficial solution. Why not offer to renovate the home but create a non profit that would manage it so that its neither the tribe or the owners but fr all to see and remember. Sho ShiA Mic

I'm of Comanche blood through my grandfather Joseph Hernandez Rodart who was born in New Braunfels, Texas. The federal government should declare the house , and most important the property as Eminent Domain. Eminent Domain - The power of the government to take private property and convert it into public use. The Fifth Amendment provides that the government may only exercise this power if they provide just compensation to the property owners. The lyrics of this song really chaps my hide - "This Land". This land is your land, and this land is my land. This land is my land and will never be your land. This man wants to destroy that idea. That he will never do !!!!!!!!!!!

The guy was right. Why throw good money after bad money. The property isn’t worth a million dollars, it’s a historic landmark (so you’d be limited when restoring it), and it would cost over a million on repairs. It’s sad that this house has gotten to this point, but it is at a point of no return. I live in West Los Angeles and the VA hospital has an old chapel (Wadsworth Chapel) facing Wilshire Blvd. It was built in 1900 and served as a catholic and Protestant place of worship. They’re asking for donations (and hopefully angelinos will come through), but unfortunately budgets increase and these buildings become money pits. I adore historical buildings, I just wish people maintained these buildings throughout the years to prevent the decay in the first place.

I visited Cache, Okla this past weekend. Went to the Trading Post and Mr Gipson was kind enough to take us back on the property and allowed us to see and photograph the Star House. It was very sad to see the condition of the home. I'm from TX but what a TRUE piece of America Indian History. Shame on the State of OK/the Comanche Tribe for not truly pursuing this with a large effort put into restoring it and coming up with a solution so that this home could be viewed for many years to come. I hope that something is done quickly to do this. The storms from the spring of 2015 created even more deterioration to the home.

Shame on the Comanche tribe? For what? They offered a million dollars to buy the house but Gipson didn't want to sell it. Shame on him for not selling the house knowing well that he can't restore in his current financial situation. I know the Comanches would take good care of that house if he would've sold it. Why didn't he sell it anyway? If he truly cared about the home, he would've sold it and let the Comanches, who have money, restore the home back to the way it was. Goes to show you that all he cares about is the attention.

I think it would be safe to say "GREED". Mr. Gipson could be set for life if he took their offer. The home was in sad shape when I was there last year and I'm sure it will only continue to get worse with time. If he cared about it 1/2 has much as he says he would sell it just to be able to see it put in the shape his Uncle would have wanted it to be in. I'm sure they Comanche could offer more, but he would still probably still turn them down. He's just being greedy. If people would "STOP" paying him to see it on his terms maybe he'd change his mind. The state should step in and do something. But I highly doubt they will. Just SAD!

Perhaps Mr Caesar and his casino could buy Quanah's Star House and restore it. They could turn it into a school or community college for the Comanche people. That would be a Win/Win.

The family resemblance is so strong ...the larger left eye...that came from Cynthia Ann... She had it Quanah had it and she does too :) So cool! Let's save the Star house WITHOUT REGARD TO OWNERSHIP.... PRESERVATION FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS NEEDS TO BE. We can't let this devolve into a situation where a hundred years from now when the house is virtually unsavable due to neglect that people will look back and shake their heads at the fact that very wealthy people could not care enough to figure it out for the object preservation itself and rather chose to fight and let it fall to run that seems to me absurd which is why I am trying everything I can think of today and I will try tomorrow to think of everything I can to get that house preserved without regard to who owns it.. Amen

I saw this & thought I wonder if it is in Oklahoma. I am Okie. My Mom was born in Snyder in 1920, My Dad in OKC on a dirt road in 1917. My Dad's Father was born in Chandler and my Mom's Mother was born in Missouri. I think my Mom's Father was born in Oklahoma and I believe he was native because of a letter to his wife on coming home from war that said he had to stop in Seminole to see his native doctor on his way home. He fought in the war of the Philippines and transportation was slow and snail mail was the only form of communication.

Cannot the State of Oklahoma jump in and do something for the restoration of important historic site in the state?
@58landman
@58landman 2 жыл бұрын
That idea, I think I recall, was tried with some kind of Native American museum in OKC and it fell flat. The owner, and who knows who that is now, is smoking pipe dreams if he thinks that home will bring him or anyone else any benefit while it is in his hands and falling into further disrepair. He should sell it to the tribe for half of what they are offering and permit them to restore it, the way they see fit, to honor Parker and his people.

@@reuterromain1054 Well, keep in mind that this vid is kind of old but I just searched the WWW and the house is still in varying states of decline. I suppose the guy who owned it thought he could make money by letting people tour the place. In any event, Comanche history is a huge part of Americana and that place should be a focal point for people who love that aspect of America. Not just the Comanche but the other tribes that resisted the US Army. Not saying they were 'great guys' but when you're fighting for your life, all bets are off.

I got a better idea. Build an exact replica with new [cyprus?] wood using Comanche labor., restore the furniture. Make it into a restaurant and serve buffalo steaks and maybe a Comanche horse whisperer teaching children about horses like only a Comache could. Best horsemen in the world !!! Why? because they had/have a unique ability to understand a horse by body language. Never saw a Comanche with spurs they didn't need them. All they had do was whisper and the horses ears perked up and he responded.
