I'm Meat Grinder. Josey's Combat Mission video AARs are absolutely top shelf. He's a very good CM player also. Can't wait to watch Part 2. This was a fun game and I recommend this scenario.

Riveting! Can't wait for part 2. I wonder what's the opponent's end game here. It seems like he's taken moderate losses early on and decided to make his defense elastic. It looks like he got his armor in pretty good positions as well.

Well I don't want to put a spoiler in here for the upcoming 2nd part. What I will say is that my opponent Meat Grinder is regarded as one of the best CM players over at the Few Good Men. He plays it down of course but his record of mulitplayer victories is impressive.

+Filion91 Basically my "plan" was to bum rush, occupy, and try to hold the road junction (100 points). I knew that I would be able to reach my touch objective (25 points), and that I shouldn't have much problem reaching the Church (75 points). Holding it might be more difficult, but cross that bridge later. I also planned to attempt to take (or at least contest) the Winery (150 points). I never believed that I would reach the 50 point touch objective on Josey's side (and if I did the game would probably be essentially over by that point anyway). The road junction was key.

Thank you for uploading this. I haven’t payed combat mission since 2007. Such a great game! I am glad to know the game has grown into a full series. I think if more people knew about this they would play it.... especially the ww2 FPS crowd.... it’s a natural progression of interest. Like being promoted from a foot soldier to commander.... I would like to see an integration of RTS and FPS into a single game, where each unit in the game is controlled by a player in FPS mode, receiving orders from a commander who has a birds eye view in an rts map mode like a combination of this game and heroes and generals.... has this been done before?
@joseywales3848
@joseywales3848 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kwame, so you would have played the original CM1 series? That's what I started on then I left the series for a while and stumbled back into CM2 by accident. I think that it is a natural progression for some FPS players. Although some FPS players do just want to shoot stuff and blow things up, which is fair enough. I think on paper it sounds good to have a combined game but I don't think that in reality it would work. For example, when I play CM I try and keep a reserve force somewhere and they may not even move from their rear positions for about an hour or so into the game. Imagine being a group of FPS player sitting doing nothing for over an hour...you see the problem. I'm not aware it has been done but any successful hybrid across the 2 genres would be heavy on the action and light on the strategy.

Yes indeed it was cm1. The demo actually lol. Back in those days I had a pretty slow laptop with windows xp on it, and it struggled to render the graphics properly, and loading times were monstrous. Needless to say I did not purchase the full game. Sadly after all these years I totally forgot about it....As someone wanting to get back into the game, which version would you recommend I start with? You made some good points about my FPS/RTS fusion game idea. I am not lost on the problems that a game like this would face, and I have a few potential solutions... Firstly, the idea behind the FPS aspect would be complete realism and immersion as well as role playing and teamwork. I’m thinking graphically and for the basic interface and control wise, heroes&generals is the best example I can currently think of. BUT, H&G is FAR from a realistic simulation type shooter, it just has a very seamless and flowing feel to it. Imagine getting rid of most of the HUD graphics including the hip-fire crosshairs; Adding a role playing style inventory interface; implementing a rigid chain of command system with points and ranking being HEAVILY dependent on following orders and team-play. Getting rid of the weapons unlocking system and putting in its place a dynamic supply chain system where individual weapons and munitions must be manufactured and transported to front lines for use in battle. Implementation of dynamic mission/battle generation based on real time strategic commands. It would be nice to even have special forces missions. Dynamic combined arms forces with operations on land sea and air. Dynamic faction system with Eastern, western and pacific fronts all represented. Adding dynamic season and weather effects for the entire game world. As for the strategy element I’m thinking there would be three basic levels of command and three types of command interface. At the top would be strategic command and the strategic world map. From here commanders would dictate generation and deployment of military divisions, tweak manufacturing cues and create supply lines to support the fronts. What cities, towns, military installations should be attacked or defended,. Again H&G gives a good example of a very basic strategic map. Second to that is the real time tactical map. This is where it gets genius. The RTT map is under the control of the battlefield commander. It is a birds eye, 3D view of the battlefield with all friendly units represented, and enemy units are rendered once friendly units have established Line of sight on them. This would essentially look and feel like playing CM. But without the pausing in the action. Perhaps there could be something of an HQ unit with a few second in command players who would have a portion of the forces under their command so that the battle can be properly managed. I’m thinking these HQ units would be actually on the battle field, either mobile or hunkered down and being vulnerable to attack if the enemy discovers them. And lastly are the squad leaders who receive orders from HQ and issue line of sight HUD commands to their squad. These would be for basic movement, fire commands, formations, and the like. Now where I see the potential genius in this is that the commands given to the SL will come in via radio and appear on their handheld map interface as a 2d representation which will require some deciphering and calculation in order to complete. As they translate the objective into basic commands for their squad, the squad members will receive the command in their HUD. That is, IF they are a human player. I’ll get back to this later. This will add a level of realism and I think it will keep commanders on their toes as well because for instance if you make contact with the enemy and are busy engaging in a fire fight, you won’t be able to just receive new orders on the HUD, instead you would have to take time to check your map and issue new commands to your squad.... this in turn would require HQ to be in their toes, as well, providing each squad with enough support so that they won’t be overwhelmed. Idk if you can invision all that with clarity, but in my mind it’s freaking awesome right now. Lol. .... You mentioned that it would suck if players were stuck as reserve units or whatever. This is true, it would be difficult for human players to be sitting, or even guarding an objective for too long without action. I have two solutions for this... the foot soldiers could actually be controlled by AI “bots” with the only real players being the Squad leaders.... and even out of those squad leaders, the battlefield commander will decide who to put into the slots.... or they could even be activated on their own with an AI squad leader. For instance, say you have an artillery squad in reserve and there’s an infantry squad that just took an objective and need to bring up that artillery to their position. As battlefield commander, you could command the the artillery as an AI to move into position, or you could transfer the human squad leader from the infantry squad to the artillery and have him/her move up that artillery while AI or another player takes over the infantry squad. With this system ultimately a battle COULD be started with only two opposing human players controlling AI armies with additional human players joining and filling the squad leader positions. I’m thinking support for 64vs64 so if it’s a larger battle, up to 128 human players could be battling with many more actual in-game units being represented by AI. Or for a smaller encounter, say two scouting squads run into each other on the strategic map, then for that battle, human players could fill the positions of squad member foot soldiers as well. Some units would operate independently of the battlefield commander, like snipers or fighter planes and bombers.... these would be support units that get their orders directly from strategic command or who just operate in the field by their own cognition.... btw, no respawning in this game. If you die you spawn into one of your squads remaining positions. Every squad leader would have a map, a pair of binoculars and a radio. These would need to be recovered in order to take on the role of the new squad leader. Strategic command could issue orders to specialized units and generate “special” missions. Like a commando raid on an enemy manufacturing site. Or For instance, let’s say you need to get a convoy of munition trucks to Paris to supply troops that are surrounded, You might first need to command armor and infantry to break through and open a roadway to the city. This will generate one battle, If successful, then you’d need to command the convoy and their defensive attachment to be on their way. If the enemy finds a way to counter attack the convoy then another battle will be generated with the trucks and their attachment being generated on the real-time map and needing to get to the other side of the map safely or defeating the enemy outright. If the supply of munitions is captured or destroyed, then the outcome of the battle for Paris could be drastically altered.... So yeah, no need to go light on the strategy. In stead, the FPS portion should be a completely secondary and optional experience of a great strategy game. With the right system in place, ultimately the army with better commanders and soldiers who actually follow orders will be victorious. I think those run and gun lone wolf type players will have to submit and catch on to the team play or give up the game. I could go on writing about this for days lol I’ve got a lot of ideas.... I think it’s doable, but I think a game like this wouldn’t be for everyone. Kinda like CM . It’s for hardcore, mature junkies like us... Btw, this is possibly the longest comment in KZbin!
@joseywales3848
@joseywales3848 6 жыл бұрын
Ha yes probably a contender for longest post on KZbin. You certainly have put a lot of thought into such a game. For now I think the game that comes closest to the 'First Person' aspect of the game you're describing is probably Scourge of War played in the HITS mode, as you play a sub-commander in charge of a Brigade but in turn are under the command of a Division or Corps Commander whose job it is to build up a picture of the battle and assign you appropriate tasks. A far as recommendations go I think it's best to start with Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy. It has the most player created content and also several expansions. It's the game that most WW2 CM players play.

Your videos should be reviewed by anyone who plays these games for training and refelction. Your use of combined armaments and especially infantry is excellent. I always find it interesting to play various Western Allies as they all have differing unit makeup and, to a certain extent, equipment. While the 17 pounder did not play into this like it could have it still is an excellent one shot one kill weapon which is something glaringly absent from US forces until later in the war.

Thanks Mark although I did make a pretty grave error in part 2 of this battle where I lost an entire platoon in a desperate grab for the centre objective. However I have learnt my lesson from that. One of the good things about showing my games in this format is that it opens them up to feedback from more experienced CM'ers and although I still make mistakes, I continue to improve at this game.
