Rest in peace to both Vic Morrow and Rick Jason. Both died in tragic ways. I hope they realized how many lives were entertained by them as the front men of one of the best war television shows ever made.

I loved it as well. I was born in 1959 and used to watch Combat in the early 60's. I remember when Vic Morrow On July 23, 1982, and two child actors, Renee Shinn Chen and Myca Dinh Le, were killed in an accident involving a helicopter during filming on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. So sad...

I was very young when this came out--4 or 5. This was my first favorite show. Vic Morrow was one of the first actors I could identify along with Raymond Burr. And the Combat opening has stuck with me all these years. My dad was a WW2 vet who served on Guadalcanal. I joined the service some 40 years after him. I sure miss him.

It was shown in the Philippines every Saturday at 7pm, I was 7 years old back then and we gather together with every other kids in our neighborhood at 6:30pm to anticipate the program. No kids were playing outside or on the street while COMBAT is still showing. After the shows, we started playing with our wooden toy guns re-enacting the play in Combat. Vice Morrow, Caje and Kirby are the more popular guys in that show. I just love Combat!

Vic Morrow acquired an enormous amount of creative control over this show, and it mostly payed off, because he was damned good. He directed some of the very best episodes. Rick Jason didn't mind, apparently, and in fact respected Morrow's judgment.

I used too watch this and "Rat Patrol" all the time when I was a kid. Listening to this song, I could picture these "dog faces " marching to the next battle in the rain through mud, unshaven, stinking to high heaven, in their cruddy fatigues, beat down, yet putting one foot in front of the other. My old-man was a Korean war vet with the 6th armored division as an infantry man. Had three battle stars on his campaign ribbon. He once told me that's one of the ways you survive, no matter what, just keep putting one foot in front of the other, 'til you get where the hell you belong.

Just to clarify something that was said earlier. The actual credits at the beginning of the episode were done in rotating order. If you watch the Combat retrospective that was done many years later, Rick Jason explained this in the Interview. It was done this way to basically appease both stars. Just wanted to clarify that. As for the show, one of my all time favorites. And if you didn't see the retrospective, you really have to.

I loved this show when I was a kid. My late Father was a WWII Veteran with the 8th USAF, B-17 Bomber Command. I was a hero-worshipping adolescent boy then as many kids would be in that age and from time to time he would caution me that war was hell with a lot of killing and destruction and there was no glory or glamor it. Dad helped me keep my head on straight and I took a deep interest in reading about history as a result.

"In May 1962, before filming for the series began, Seligman had the principal cast (Jason, Morrow, Rogers, Jalbert and Greene) go through a week of basic training at the Army's Infantry Training Center at Fort Ord in northern California.[9] "We did everything from crawling under barbed wire with live .50 calibre machine bullets whizzing over our heads, to swinging across a muddy pond on a rope, to pulling the pin on a live grenade and throwing it properly, to running an obstacle course," Jason later wrote. "It was much more than I’d had to do in [World War II] for my real basic training in the Air Corps."[5] Morrow noted that the instructors who worked with the cast at Fort Ord had one common request: not to act like John Wayne. "Poor John," Morrow told a reporter. "I wonder if he knows he's almost a dirty word in the Army."--Wikipedia

Actually he didn't use the liner. They made many of the cast members fiber glass versions of an M1 steel pot. It was a lighter helmet but it wasn't the liner. The camouflage cover he used was not actually a Marine Corp cover. It was made from parachute camouflage material. This was different looking then Marine corp camo. There are pictures of rangers during WW2 using these parachute camo covers. Cool stuff.

Combat! was a great show. Very good story-lines, character developments, and attention to script consistency. I would sit through this show, then followed it up with McHale's Navy, and or F-Troop, though sometimes I would catch episodes of Hogan's Heroes and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

I was addicted to this show! I ended up getting the entire series on DVD a few years ago. The episode that always stuck out in my mind was when the guy was too young to be in the war but he could spot the snipers hidden in the trees. He eventually saved the day by telling Sgt Saunders where they were. This was the best war series on tv, then came The Gallant Men. I also liked Garrison's Gorillas. I thought Chief throwing the knife was cool!

A little trivia for you. Look at Sanders Helmet. First of all it has Marine Corp camo on it. Secondly, that helmet has two parts, the exterior hard steel outer, and a light "plastic" or fiberglass inner liner. He ditched the heavy steel, took the inner liner, covered it in the marine camo and voila!!! A nice paper light helmet to film in!! lol

awesome...after all these years, I just realised that I always used to think Saunders was holding a Colt pistol in his hand in that shot, it was the mag of his usual .45 Thompson, the newsprint grainy art background they used sort of blended and concealed part of the weapon...i could never understand why he had a handfun instead of his beloved .45 SMG..
