All of my grandfathers and uncles and great uncles fought in WW2 and my Dad fought in the Korean war, so it had a special significance growing up. When I was a kid my Dad used to let me stay up and watch Combat with him, then in the 1970s it was on every Saturday morning. Definitely a classic TV. Series.

My father was in the Korean War. He loved all the war pictures and especially this show, Combat. When I was young around ten or eleven, he used to ask me if I wanted to sit down and watch Combat with him. I would make up excuses not to, as by that time in our relationship, we were at odds and just were not connecting. Many decades later I was watching old tv shows, when the next show to come on was Combat. I started to watch the first episode, and by the end, I understood why it was one of my dad's favorites. Then when that familiar theme song came on to start the next episode, I broke down in tears. It brought back all those memories of refusing to watch that show with my dad, and all because of my stubborn pride. Perhaps had I just put my pride aside, maybe watching that show together would have broken down the walls in our relationship and things would have been different. But by this time, it was too late as he had already passed on. Listening to that theme song today, brought back those old memories. Memories I wish I could go back and change.

I used to watch that as a kid, along with my dad and brothers. Later on in the military (since almost every guy was watching it) we used to let the rifle hang loosely on one side and one of us would start singing the Combat theme. Everyone else would instantly pick it up and join in, until the whole platoon was singing it. It was motivating us. Of course the drill trainer would always try to spoil it : "Shut the fuck up back there". Good times man, that was about 35 years ago when i was in my early 20's.

I used to watch this and "Rat Patrol" all the time when I was a kid. Listening to this song, I could picture these "dog faces " marching to the next battle in the rain through mud, unshaven, stinking to high heaven, in their cruddy fatigues, beat down, yet putting one foot in front of the other. My old-man was a Korean war vet with the 6th armored division as an infantry man. Had three battle stars on his campaign ribbon. He once told me that's one of the ways you survive, no matter what, just keep putting one foot in front of the other, 'til you get to where the hell you belong.

Where there's a job to be done is where we'll be, For we are the fighting men of the Infantry. CHORUS Follow me, left, right, Follow me, left, right, We'll go marching to hell and back if it has to be. Follow me, left, right, Follow me, left, right, We're the ever ready men of the Infantry.
