Great comparison video! All are good choices for a true battle rifle in my opinion...you just gotta get what you can afford and train like heck with it. My choice for what my carbine was built for would be the Eotech EXPS3-0.

You know this might be the most accurate comment on this video yet! All of these optics are cool, but the most effective choice is what you're confident in using! Certainly budget is the limiting factor for all of us so choose something you like and run it! Thanks for watching!

I've run everything, but the Elcan extensively. Taken all three into combat. I personally prefer the Razor Gen III above the ACOG and Eotech (I did not have a 5x magnifier on my M4) I ended up putting the Razor with Badger mount on my EBR as a DMR. The optic is wonderful in that capacity as he mentioned. I now have it on my 14.5 with a DPP 6MOA @ 45⁰. Yes it's on the heavy side but I'm somewhat of a larger guy so the extra weight is negligible. I absolutely love the set up. It's also far lighter than the EBR so again, I'm not concerned. Where I live I'll be engaging anywhere from 0 to 500 meters and this setup can run the full gambit.
@MountainsMulletsMerica

Love the real world commentary! I really like the sounds of the 1-10 with an offset red dot, if you can manage a little extra weight I think this would offer a great package to engage targets up close and then push out to distance as you mentioned. I've ran the 1-10 on a couple of my rifles in other videos and made hits fairly easily on steel out to 1000ish yards. Really liked how the 1-10 fit on a DMR type rifle, the mil style reticle lends itself really well to that type shooting. Thanks for watching!

You know a lot of folks have mentioned how poorly the rifle groups at 100 yds. Ultimately though it is what it is, M855 is not match ammo and as shown in the video, consistent 3moa performance is plenty capable of making consistent hits on a reduced man size torso at 300 yds. Just out here trying to provide a look at what realistic performance is out of this package. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Great video, I have the eotech AA single dot and g45.. 200 yard zero and it’s fun to plink steel without the magnifier for sure, and with the magnifier you can definitely tighten up the groups. I Was looking at some of the other optics to mess around with but I think I was just ill with want, I’ll keep the eotech combo. You know I was very pleasantly surprised with the eotech/ magnifier setup. I fully expected this to be my least favorite option out of each of these options but after filming this video I'm looking for an excuse to buy an eotech with magnifier. Really good comparison, I've been wanting a elcan ever since seeing it on all the rangers block 2's and mk18's, they're just expensive. I got a 11.5 BCM rifle and a palmetto AK. I feel like putting a primary arms 1-6 on the AK and keep it a cheap hunting/battle rifle. Then I could put a elcan on the 11.5, or buy a FSP block 2 upper for the elcan and have the eotech that's on the 11.5 as a spare optic. I just like having a etched reticle instead of relying on batteries or irons for a fighting rifle.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
Yeah the biggest downside to the elcan is cost. If you can get past that barrier though it really is an epic optic. Beautiful glass, awesome capability with integrated 1x and 4x and like you say the etched and very clean reticle is a huge pro. Plus I'm not sure it gets cooler than an Elcan on a 14.5" block II FSP upper haha. Thanks for watching!

As much as we can't have these kinds of rifles here in Australia, it's really interesting to see how the optics stack up against each other. pump action 5.56 rifles with LPVOs are the go-to in competition shooting in Aus, mostly due to the stage design. With defense being not the point of anyone's gear choice, it's always going to be down to competitive shooting to make the choice. Great video!
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
Very interesting! I didn't realize pump action 5.56 rifles were the go to choice in your neck of the woods. While this video was geared toward a "fighting rifle" or defensive type rifle I believe the concepts discussed with each optic are still valid for the competition world. In fact I've run the elcan, the acog and an older 1-6 LPVO in many carbine and 2 gun matches through the years and each of these are very effective for that type shooting as well. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch!

@@MountainsMulletsMerica with no semi-autos allowed for 99.9% of people, and pump action rifles being available for everyone, it is really the obvious choice of action type. They are popular enough that Australia has a few domestic manufacturers of pump 223 and 308 rifles that have really great reputations. Compatible with AR/ stanag mags, so it is as close to a semi-auto as we can get. Thanks for all the awesome content, I've been watching since those first few uploads so I'm keen to keep seeing the channel evolving! If you are interested in "fighting" rifles, then begin by looking at the US Army standard issue M4 (14.5 with an aimpoint red dot). During this time frame, you will see 14.5 an 20 inch rifles outfitted with the ACOG. More recently, the Marines have opted for 16 inch M4s with 1x6 LPVOs. Don't cheap out the magnifier. I have an EXPS2-2 and it's crystal clear with the G33. It still looks good with my Holosun HMX3T and Vortex Micro 3 but it's noticeable and you'll seriously want that clearer glass at higher magnification. If you like that set up, next time it'll save you some cash to buy both a EXPS and G33 together. I found the combo for $830 shipped this year and been really pleased with it. LPVOs are tricky because again, you'll want and benefit from clearer glass at higher magnification. I recommended a Trijicon Credo HX 1-6, Delta Stryker HD, Steiner PX4I, Trijicon TR25, Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 for decent sub $1,000 LPVOs that I consider mid range-ish if you're ever looking to get out of that budget LPVO tier with the Primary Arms SLX, Swampfox Arrowhead, Sig Tango MSR tiers. A sleeper LPVO is the Burris RT6 imo which is sub $400.

Curious how the Acog would stack up in this comparison if run with a offset or piggyback micro red dot. It should only add a couple of oz. Do you think it would rank up there with the Eotech or Elcan if so? Another idea for a video that could be interesting is barrel length for a fighting rifle outdoors. If it's not something you are going to use in indoor CQC, is going from a 18/16inch to a 10 or 14.5 providing any tangible benefit over the longer options, or are you better off with the longer barrel and greater velocity? The short AR are all the rage these days, and are great for home defense or urban combat, however for us in rural America are they really relevant?

Totally agree with you here. I've run this 4x TA31F for years but there are so many acog options out there now it's really easy for a person to find exactly what fits their intended application best. After shooting this video I'm thinking I'll add a red dot to my acog equipped rifle so step that short range game up. May play with some of the lower magnification acogs down the road though as I love how light and robust they are. Thanks for watching!

Nice video and as usual you did some good shooting. With that said I fundamentally disagree with your conclusion. I believe the ACOG is the best option and yes, it is superior when paired with an RMR. That said, you will not find a lighter or more durable optic that offers the capability of an ACOG+RMR combo. Yes, on a 10.3" MK18 personally I'd run an eotech or other RDS. BUT, for the average person a 10.3" rifle is not an ideal fighting rifle. Something in the 11.5-14.5" range would be better and really, I'd say 11.5" only if using it suppressed as you are. Otherwise the average person should be running a 12.5-14.5" barrel with a magnified optic. You can definitely engage faster with a red dot sight at close range. But combat isn't just about engaging, it's about gathering information so that you know when to engage and how best to do so. I really dig your channel bro but I had to offer my 2 cents. Another guy whom I also recently found and subscribed to has an excellent video where he really lays down the logic behind the ACOG and ACOG+RMR. I really suggest watching it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIGymqdserKrpKs

Solid video from preparedairmen and I appreciate you sharing! Looks like he's got a solid channel with a lot of cool content. Ultimately I agree with both your and prepared airmen's comments, a magnified optic is a much have on fighting type AR. The acog is an awesome optic, extremely robust with a great glass a huge field of view an easy to use reticle. If I were putting together a rifle where weight was at the top of the list I would for sure choose an acog with red dot. If weight isn't the most critical concern I believe there are other options that I would prefer. I believe a fair mix of capability and weight is the red dot with the magnifier setup. Run the magnifier on the rifle when you need the ability to magnify and see/ shoot at distance, then if you find yourself shooting primarily close range or working with NV remove the magnifer and run the red dot by itself. Ultimately though each of these optics have a place on a fighting rifle as they all have their own pros and cons. For me, I prefer my acog on my 14.5" block II upper. I'm actually planning a video with this setup shortly so stay tuned! Appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Would love to hear what you think after running each of those side by side. Ultimately I love LPVOs but for the purposes outlined in this video I preferred the other optics. My opinion is an LPVO is a great fit on something like a 14.5-16" rifle or something along the lines of a DMR that you're looking to push out to distance. This 1-10 in particular was a lot of scope for a 10.3" SBR where max engagement distance is 200-300ish yards. Thanks for watching!

Yeah I wish 100yd accuracy was better but ultimately it is what it is and as shown in the video 3-4 moa is very much "combat accurate" out to 300 yds. I just couldn't deal with the 1-10's tight eye relief so I sprung for an ATACR 1-8. Mind you I paid 2300 for it instead of the usual 2800. The Vortex's ability to just disappear in your field of view is really unparalleled. That said, the tight eyebox on that optic is just, well, tight. Exit pupil makes it worthless at high mag when it's not a clear bright day but you can always dial back to a lower one. The 1-10 I would say is exclusively for a DMR type rifle. The ATACR is much more forgiving, but it takes up a lot in your field of view and has a tight FOV itself. You don't miss it too much with both eyes open but it's there. That said, the more forgiving eyebox is very much noticed. Exit pupil is simple math, same constraints as the 1-10 at equal mags. I'd say the ATACR can live on an AR, but is still happiest on a DMR type rifle. Following the 1x per 100 yards rule, 1-6 is fine for an AR-15. 8 can't hurt though (usually). I'll have to use the ATACR more, and mess with the diopter some more for an ideal image, as obviously with LPVOs it's all a compromises. Just some barely related thoughts on the optic in the video and its competitor. Obviously you CAN run the 1-10 more than fine, as seen in this video (and my experience) but your margin for error in head placement is much, much higher on a 1-8, 1-6, and 1-4 (in ascending order). never much messed with red dot and mag but I can see it as a great way to get a little longer range capability on a close-in focused rifle. Elcan is an elcan. Ancient, but in 1000 years they'll still work. ACOG with an RMR is a weird one. I use one now. Takes getting used to, that's for damn sure.

The vortex eye box on 8 is the same as the eye box on the ATACR 🙄
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
Love this summary and I am very much in agreement. I just cannot get into the Acog with RMR so I'll leave that one alone haha. The elcan obviously I'm a huge fan of as you can see in this video. When it comes to LPVOs, I love the razor 1-10 but after spending a fair amount of time with one I don't see myself buying one. There's just something about the optic at higher magnification that I don't like. Part of it might be the eye box, but the bigger part is something about the image just doesn't look right to me. Hard to explain other than I always feel like the image is a little bit blurry even though I don't think it is. My guess is this feeling comes from the fixed 100ish yd parallax. I owned an atacr 1-8 years ago but sold it because I didn't like the old style reticle. Now that they've released a much improved reticle I could see purchasing an atacr 1-8 to use on something like a 14.5" upper or on a 16" dmr type setup. After running each of these optics side by side in a "fighting rifle" type application, I really feel like the eotech with the magnifier or the elcan would be my preference. Both are very fast and easy to use without a lot of extra expense or weight. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!

If I decide to be another LPVO this is what I'll go with. I had an ATACR 1-8 several years ago with the old style reticle. Ultimately sold it because of how much I disliked that reticle, now that they've really improved the reticle it's back on my list of optics to buy. Unfortunately after spending a fair amount of time on the razor 1-10 I don't see myself purchasing one of these. Great optic overall but just some things about it that would make me hesitant to buy. Awesome video. Did you notice how the shots you took with hand guard directly on the barricade were getting pushed up? When you went prone or kneeling, the shots were much closer to your point of aim with the gun off the barricade. Could be the barrel harmonics being affected by resting on a hard surface. On the 36/300 zero: this is the USMC zero used on 20" A2/A4 rifles with iron sights. The 36 part is just a 'preliminary' zero to get you on paper and close to zero. You HAVE to confirm at 300. The USMC marksmanship manual even says not to use the gun in combat with only a preliminary 36yd zero. It can be used on shorter barrels but the numbers won't match as much. The 36yd part doesn't really matter as the final zero is confirmed at 300 and that's the one that matters. On ACOGs the zero is done at 100, but i think you know that
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
You know I can’t say I noticed my impacts pushing high when shooting off the barricade vs off the bipod. I really just chalked those shots up to the fact that I was trying to shoot somewhat rapidly off of a rather unsteady position. Now you’ve got me thinking I should rewatch the video and maybe do a little more range time testing to see if there’s more to what you’re noticing. On the 36yd zero thing….. this was me confirming performance at distance out of this rifle haha. Thankfully things were close enough to work for the video. Stay tuned for more content like this!
