He thought I hated the show but I didn’t. My brother served in the army in viet-nam. And my dad served in the Navy in wwII. And my mom worked for the uso. My only serving of the military was I dated Air Force officers. So did my mom until she met my dad. But we all thought this show was great!

I've read many times that it was a shame when Shecky Greene left the show, and I see what they mean. Loved him and RJ in the opening scene and BTW, RJ in that scene, wow! His smooth voice, sunny smile, and perfect timing were so well done, he oozed unspoken menace, esp while skinning bits off a pencil with a sharp bayonet.

"The Prisoner" was the first of the annual Combat! 'Christmas' episodes (it aired on 12/25/62). Typically, they were off-beat in nature, and were strong on comedy. Next, watch for 1963's "The Party," which aired on Christmas Eve.

It took the Americans roughly one year to get from Normandy to what was then Czechoslovakia. This show was on for five years and they never got out of France. I liked Colonel Clyde. I've served under commanders like that. They kept us on our toes. Patton would have gotten after him for not wearing a helmet, though--at least the movie Patton would have.

I'm surprised Shecky Green's character, Braddock, didn't understand the Germans. He said, "farshtaste" which is Yiddish for "do you understand". Yiddish is about 90% German. I assume Greene is Jewish, most of that generation's comedians were. (Vic Morrow and Rick Jason were also Jewish).
