That was beautiful. What really hits me is when you see something like these you know how many countless times in different situations that a person who thought they were a looser realizes that their a winner. Similar to the concept of the movie Rocky.

I LOVED Combat when I was a kid. My 8 year old grandson loves to play these war video games - he’s SO into it. I showed him an episode of Combat on KZbin and he was amazed. Kids these days don’t have much attention spans when it comes to TV shows - they usually get bored after 10 minutes - but this little guy was glued to my computer for almost 60 minutes. Gonna order the box set - hope they have one.

A great episode of emotions. We all get scared at one time or another. Returning and saving Sarge does deserve a medal. He faced some of his fears. These guys were young. Some 16, 17 lied about their age. Tough way to grow up. He probably turned out to be a great soldier
@christopherfranklin18813 жыл бұрын
Deserting your Sergeant, or any other human being, in trouble is a shameful sin. Soldiers live and fight for each other. While I was in Vietnam I made sure my men knew this. Sure, you get scared when you come under fire. But that is why they train you. As a person, you have to suck up that fear and do your duty as a soldier, to include having the back of a fellow soldier. I would not forgive anyone who deserted that fellow soldier. OK, in this episode he comes back. And this is a scripted TV show. Something like this may or may not have happened in real life. All I can say is that nothing like this happened in my platoon in many combat situations.

I'm watching the series again. It was a college favorite pass time of mine. In this episode you see the child side of a young scared man try to lie and get away with it. But realizing a return to the town would reveal himself a very bad man, he had to choose. Go and somehow kill Sonders? Or actually try again to free him? Or, just do nothing? His fear of his comrads was greater than fear of death suddenly. You can see the writing was pretty good. The acting was really good and you could live the emotion. Arriving in town, avoiding the Germans, the kid finds Sonders playing dead and he was relieved, until Sonders wasn't. In a real world, this kid would get a firing squad. But an understanding and greatful superior does happen, and people do cover things up in real life. Excellent episode. I think its believeable, and while I don't think anyone would get away clean like this, it made good drama.

I know people bitch about weapons accuracy and such, but one thing you'll see is that Saunder's Thompson always has the bolt BACK hen he's ready to shoot. For those unfamiliar, the Thompson was an "open bolt" weapon, which means, when in the ready to fire condition, the bolt is retracted fully rear, and held there. You can tell by the knob on the top of the weapon. Unlike .45 autos, which are often seen hammer down, which means the pistol is NOT ready to shoot.

This series from the 60s was always a great production and still is, but decades later it happened to us in the Malvinas Islands, in a colonial enclave of Great Britain. An attempt was made to recover them in 1982, using old Skyhawk a4s from the 1950s without radar. They flew very low, meters above the sea to avoid radars, along with Super Etendard fighters with ExoCet missiles. It was a Mach 0.9 "fire and forget" anti-ship missile, Mirage III with bombs that did not detonate because they were launched at too much speed with the target close, but that should be the strategy of the Argentine Air Force, etc., but as he said an Ensign, "we were a shot at a duck" if the English radar saw them.

@@TheEvilDrR Also partly because he absolutely hated Guns of any sorts in real life. Hence he only used when script required him to. What a guy 👍

+KurtB just 28? and at least 10 silver stars, seriously do his squad members even do anything?
@kurtbjorn9 жыл бұрын
Arthur Yagami Kirby and Caje are good troops. I agree, 10 silver stars. But Medal of Honor? I'm not sure I've seen Saunders do anything to merit the MOH...

This is an exceptionally LONG episode at 51:29 contrasted to the more usual 47:15 or so. Might have been one of those "limited commercial interruptions" occasions I remember from the mid 60s.

Morrow's horrific death has overshadowed his immense talent and is a source of amusement for assholes who like to make jokes about it.

Why is Vic wearing a helmet with a 'Far East' covering - when he's in Europe??!! Brilliant show!!
@theChickenstones3 жыл бұрын
Just a clever production detail with Saunder’s helmet. He had the camouflaged cover on his helmet which has been criticized as being for the USMC and not the Army. What it actually is, is a piece of camouflaged parachute fabric that Morrow must have found someplace and used. On the subject of helmet covers, everybody had their own particular aberration on their helmets if not on formal parade. This is so that everybody would be able to quickly identify their own helmet whenever they needed to grab it in a hurry. You’ll notice that soldiers like Kirby and Caje had the same tears on the helmet netting for most of the series.

Didn't Sal get shot in the Longest Day. He mistakenly thought it was the cricket issued to them. Instead it was the clicking sound of the German rifle.

Worked at a tv station and doing camera for a news cast. The announcer was a heavy smoker and he would sit there during the commercial break dragging away and when he thought we were coming up he threw his smoke onto the floor. a few seconds goes by and he asks when we are up and I tell him. He gets me to pick his cig. up and give it to him.He took the biggest and longest drag I ever saw and he didn't exhale the smoke. He eventually died from lung cancer.
@christopherfranklin18813 жыл бұрын
@@9johnpaul I used to work with a guy that smoked more than a chimney. He would sit at his desk (they used to allow smoking in the office way back in the day). He would have a coughing fit so bad we thought he would die right there. He would shake it off and then take a long drag from the cig in his hand. One day he took a nap at his desk (during lunch) and simply did not wake up. I guess he died happy.

how many times was Sgt Saunders (Vic) wounded :-) :-) seems like every other episode, leg hands head legs etc etc and all this with only one magazine and a few handgrenades what a guy. I just like all that ww2 hard wear wonder how much they would be worth now.
