The épée has a three-sided blade with a stiff rectangular cross-section. The blade is typically about 35 inches (89 cm) in length and weighs approximately 27 ounces (770 grams). It tapers to a sharp point and is primarily used for thrusting attacks.
It has a large bell-shaped guard, also known as a "bell guard" or "cup guard." The guard's primary function is to protect the hand of the fencer and prevent the opponent's blade from making direct contact. The bell guard provides better hand protection compared to the smaller guards used in foil and sabre.
The grip of an épée is typically orthopedic and pistol-shaped, designed to provide a comfortable and secure hold for the fencer. The handguard extends to cover the back of the hand, providing additional protection.

Really beautiful job and a very interesting video description too about the épée compared to foil and sabre. KZbin restorers often forget that people are interested in the history of the object itself and not just the restoration. You kindly relied to me about the history of a chef knife you restored a little while ago which was also interesting.

Very nice. I used to fence until about 20 years ago. Had to stop due to arthritic knees. I like the old classic French grip, not at all like the modern pistol grips. I would be proud to fence with your restored epee. The guards are designed for different function and style of fencing. In epee the whole body is target, including the hands, hence the large bell guard. Sabre is both a thrusting and cutting weapon, any body part above the waist, including hands is valid target. That is why sabres get knuckle guard, to better protect the hand. The foil is a thrusting which only allows the torso as valid target, hence no need for a large bell guard. Old foil guards were actually a butterfly/figure-8 pattern. The French name for foil is fleuret. There are also rules as to "right of way" which disallows simultaneous attacks in foil and sabre, epee has no right of way and allows simultaneous attacks. Anyway, great video.

Dear FTD guy 👍👌👏 Really nice result again and as always (video and work). A bit short for my personal kind of taste. Because I miss the part about getting rid of all the rust marks (especially the relatively deep scars) on the hand protection metal piece. By the way: I used to use the same metal polish tube for decades. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards, luck and health in particular.

really nice restoration job, particularly like the natural cordage yu used on the hilt, just started playing around with that stuff myself on my knives I make, could I suggest you look at zinc and copper plating as that was around in the time period you emulate so well and either would work really well on the guard yo so carefully polished? Looks great though, thoughtfully planned work and looks bang on

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the suggestion and I like the direction this is heading. Honestly, I have a hard time where people constantly point out how something is not period correct. It is not simple and easy to pull it off in 19th century manner without getting a ton of ¨smart¨ comments that are mostly irrelevant and frankly annoying.
@andyc750
@andyc750 11 ай бұрын
@@FFD_Restorations ignore them, and tell me if I am annoying, not meant to be and certainly not a criticism, love the way you do your work, as I have told you before there are only a couple of restoration channels I watch as most are fake and often destroy genuine artefacts, you don't, obviously a lot of thought goes into your work and it shows and the resulty speak for themselves, also like the fact that you do things from the period and often think that the way you restore is very much what someone would have done back then to repair damaged tools etc

I just got and restored a hand cranked grinder. What lubricant do you use to make it run well?
@FFD_Restorations
@FFD_Restorations 9 ай бұрын
Sounds awesome, well done! Depending on the model, if there are holes for lubrication you can use machine oil (one drop before use). If not, any grease inside will do (adding/replacing once a year).

Hi Boris: nice fx on camera 2. 😊🎉 also how did you make the hand guard so shined? Often when I use abrasive to remove the tarnish, I find at least one place that is discolored. How do you restore the discoloration? I polish with Flitz but it’s still has discolor spot. Just wondering what you’d suggest. Another great video and restoration my friend. - Kathy
@FFD_Restorations
@FFD_Restorations 11 ай бұрын
Hello Kathy, how are you? Thanks a lot, I'm experimenting a bit 😁 Regarding discoloration, I have tried many things and always come back to the same. And that is to sand away more until I reach "healthy" material. To make everything look nice it needs to be sanded broadly so you don't see any transition between heavily sanded areas from the rest of it. Hopefully this is helpful. You can always start with fine sandpaper like P400 and see how it looks after, maybe that will do the job. If not P120 or P240 grit should do the job. Of course after course sand paper you need to go over with finer sandpaper to get smooth surface before polish

This is used for fencing but it's rapier, not éépé. You can tell it because éépé has different shape of handle,armguard is smaller and éépé in general is used with stabbing motion.

Hey Nino, please see the video description where I described details of this sword.
@RvnKnight
@RvnKnight 11 ай бұрын
The shape of the blade gives away that it's an epee. A rapier is more pointed and narrow in general. An epee is an obtuse triangular shape with a very wide top/base of the blade near the guard and shallow angle/apex opposite, going into the tip of the blade. Many rapiers also have a crossguard inside of the bell housing. I fenced foil and epee for a semester or so and then sabre for a few years after. I was also the club armorer for at least two of the years.
