Episode 51. The Swifts and the Knights: 25 years in the skies

In this episode of Combat Approved the viewers of the Zvezda TV will see the aerobatic teams not only in the sky, but also on the ground. All over the world it is recognized that the best of them are Russian. The Swifts and the Russian Knights. And both were formed 25 years ago. We will show you how their pilots perform aerobatics, synchronously, in groups. And explain the real complexity of such maneuvers in the sky. It is interesting that our pilots do it on actual military fighters, not on specially prepared planes. It only takes an hour for these machines to be ready to perform combat missions.

The Blue Angels uses modified FA-18/super hornets jets that are just for the show and to sustain the 'tight' sequence. The Russian knights uses actual combat aircrafts. It is harder to pilot in combat aircrafts for airshows.

The Blue Angels can be prepped for combat in 72 hours. They are combat ready jets, if the need arises. Other than that, they are actual pilots who can use other planes as well.

I live close to West Point and had a chance to watch Blue Knights! They are sharp and tight, but them Russians are something else!

I am always amazed to see Russians doing acrobatics with such big fighters ! In France, we use the Dornier-Breguet Alpha Jet, they are tiny compared to a Sukhoi Su-27: Length 11,85m Vs 21,93m . Weight 3,35 t Vs 16 t

The Knights had a Russian woman pilot who did ballet in the sky in a Sukoi 35, or so I think. She has moved on to other duties in Russian Air Force, a General now.

Russian Knights & Swifts (3 feet from each other in formation - Not so tight & VERY shaky flight). US Navy Blue Angeles & USAF Thunderbirds (18 inches from each other in formation - VERY TIGHT & well disciplined).

One uses modified jets to make it easy to maneuver (F18 - 3 ~ 4 ton), the other uses conventional military (Sukhoi Su-27 13 ton) jets... But hey, USA almighty
