My great-grandmother was a Whitworth and I grew up in the South. To understand the Civil War, it is important to understand the history of the machines used to defend the Confederacy back in those times. I can feel the skin burning at Antietam in this special sort of way... I can see the machines glowing in the flames. I can taste the ash and soot and metal as I listen to this fabulous song.

Yes this movie is such a great comment on the war culture. Kubrick was a cynic and had a very pessimistic view of human nature. What's really interesting is how many men love this movie for all the wrong reasons, because this reflects their own hatred for life. Kubrick was making a comment on how really fucked up America is.
