This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will ... My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit ... My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will ... Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!

The look on Ermy's face at around 1:30 as he looks around the barracks is golden. Sgt. Hartmann realizes that the Marines have become what he wants. It's literally a "putting your kids to bed" feeling. It's one of the few times Hartmann puts down his guard of being vicious. He looks proud of the Marines. Another scene is at the gun range where he's surprised by Pyle's marksmanship.
@GradyPhilpott7 ай бұрын
I don't mean to be persnickety, but in that scene, only Hartmann is a Marine. The platoon still consists of maggots. In the graduation scene, Hartmann says, "Today, you people are no longer maggots. Today, you are Marines."
@breadyboi72865 ай бұрын
@@GradyPhilpottSurely the simple ceremony of graduation is not what makes a ‘maggot’ a ‘marine’. It is the time spent between intake and graduation that transforms a civilian into a marine. I think the original comment has it right, for he is satisfied with the process of transformation from civilian to marine.

This movie came out only a couple of years before I started basic training in Canada so the lines were still fresh in everyone's minds and we were always reeling them off to each other and sometimes it would get on the NCO's nerves and we'd get pushups or extras or whatever. There was one guy who knew them all down pat and the 1st night we had our weapons in the barracks, our Sgt challenged him to recite this whole scene off word for word and if he did, he'd cancel all of his pushups. He said - how about we do it as a platoon and if we do it, you cancel everyone's pushups ? The Sgt agreed and gave us one night to practice and if we did it, he'd cancel our pushups but if we failed, he'd double them. We pulled it off and he kept his word... we all got a clean slate.
