Love everything about this - including the hurried sneaky shortcut taken to catch the bands approaching a second time. We afficionados have all done it ... and who would not want to do it, in the circumstances? Stirring sights and sounds indeed, and all the more precious in the pandemic context...

Yes it was an invite only event. I only got the nod shortly beforehand. I streamed it live to facebook and it has past the quarter of a million mark! While I can do it with switching I would have to rely on others and this was not possible. That was a once in a lifetime lucky shoot. In fact Im adding subscribers daily on the back of it. There was no rehearsal for this.

I'm amazed how many parked cars there are, when I went to Northern Ireland and Britain 30 years ago if there was a Military Parade all cars, were kept away from the route and all of the litter bins and Post Boxes were taped off to make sure that there wasn't any Bombs in them and I took part of the Armistice Day Parade in 1992 and we were transported to the Start point in Coaches behind the British contingent, the route was blocked by the Police and we had Police Outriders and Cars to get us there and someone drove around the road block and almost ploughed into the lead Coach, I know that was during The Troubles but it still scares me to see that many vehicles....

Traditionally the bands role in the regiment developed to also provide first aid, the marches and music are often shared but also are specific songs drawn from a regiments past, for example " ca ira" for the Yorkshire regiment, a French revolutionary song "ca ira" was used in battle, when the British 14th foot were heavily engaged fighting the French, a fog fell upon the field, the commanding officer seized the opportunity to deceive his opponents by ordering the band to " strike up ca ira lads, and we'll beat them to their own damned tune"......the French thinking reinforments had arrived, got the worst of it and lost, and the melody centuries later, retains a vital place in the Yorkshire Regiments history, very much alive today

What is it about British bugles that makes them so difficult to play in tune? I have noticed this across several bands. As a former brass player my first thought is perhaps the mouthpiece?
@bugler75
@bugler75 2 жыл бұрын
The art of Bugling has been lost in the British Army. Even in The Light Division . Even the physical quality of the bugles have deteriorated badly. Buglers outside the Light Division aren’t given the same amount of rehearsal time that other musicians are. Remember too that Buglers are soldiers first and this also limits practice time. They aren’t professional musicians like the Regimental Band. Often they are given a week before a parade or Remembrance Sunday for example to get their lip back into shape. So all this adds up to a difficulty to produce a good sound. This sounded to me like there was a tuning issue and overblowing due to nerves/lack of experience. However I must finish by saying that at least the Royal Irish have reestablished a bugle section after an absence of several years and I wish them all the best😊
@TheCatBilbo
@TheCatBilbo 2 жыл бұрын
Bugler75 sums-up the issue perfectly. I've noticed some Household Cavalry trumpeters can sound embarrassingly bad, which is a shame. I suspect the same issues apply, although they have less excuse!
@bugler75
@bugler75 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCatBilbo It’s a shame but the degradation began when we were going to Iraq and Afghanistan and the priority was soldiering which is fair enough. The standard of drill has dropped too. I know I sound like an old grumpy bugger bit ill be the first to say that I’d rather the troops spend more time on the range than on the square. However, if you’re a Bugler, Piper, Drummer, going on Public Duties etc then give them the time to rehearse and stop planning on the back of a cigarette packet! I’m glad I’m retired from the the Army now but if I was 16 again I’d be in there like a shot! 😁
@TheCatBilbo
@TheCatBilbo 2 жыл бұрын
@@bugler75 Absolutely right, the military band is so often the public face of the Services, and engenders pride from those serving, or seeing them. We still have the reputation of having the best bands, the best ceremonial. Just like you, I want people who can 'shoot straight' before ceremony, but pride & morale is vital as part of the recipe - the bands are part of that.
@bugler75
@bugler75 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCatBilbo I agree 100%, we still have the best in the world when it comes to ceremonial traditions. And Bands and Public Duties are often the only interaction the general public have with the Armed Forces.
