The fact the song is about the state of rap in its current form and the conversation went there naturally is great.

When they started to fall down that rabbit hole I could still hear that doown-d-doo-doo-doown beat from the song. To y’all, the reactors, Demons and Ducks is a direct reference to Drake. This is the best thing I’ve seen since this song came out. True hip hop fans discussing the state of its art in the midst of one of its biggest artists.

Stockholm syndrome and Lima Syndrome are kind of linked. The first is what captives can develop when held and they start to feel positive feelings towards the people holding them. Lima syndrome is the oposite where the captors start to get feelings towards the people they hold. So he is describing his own mental state here where his need to go ghost is like he holds himself captive and so is feeling both of these at the same time. Real esoteric reference in the way he uses it :)

There is three phases to listening to Aes. Step 1. Surface level, music video, find the bars you catch. Step 2. You dig for the parts you don't understand. Step 3. Listening to the song on that deep of a level is almost a hallucinogenic experience as you can keep up with the references and music as he raps. I find it hard to get such rich media to consume.

Lupe Fiasco said it best about Aesop: his bars can just be a singular word. Lupe said that what he considers a great bar is one he has to go back and listen to a few times to really get the fully meaning and depth of, and Aesop can make you do that with one word. Gotta keep a dictionary handy when you listen to him lol

What I love the most is that he was invited on Stephen Colbert and went with this track. He could've chosen "Kirby" from the same album, a track about his cat, much more "marketable" for the average listener. But he went with the track where he disses and distances himself from the whole popular part of the scene.

Lyrics below: Question: If I died in my apartment like a rat in a cage Would the neighbors smell the corpse before the cat ate my face? I used to floss the albatross like Daddy Kane with the chain I'm tryin' to jettison the ballast with the hazardous waste The kid is comfortably numb, routine a tedious crutch Deep in a self imposed Stockholm and Lima influx Maybe an occupation popular with demons and ducks Made any mingling akin to bein' seasoned and stuffed It's a theatre of jumpin' jellyfish, jealous little sycophants Miserable and flimsy from the skivvys to the pissy pants Each one seperately convinced They're sketching with Da Vinci's hands Delusion turn a communication of prison camp You fuckin' dorks ain't a threat to the cause There ain't a lesson we can learn from the ostensibly lost I think it's funny when defendants from identical haunts Step out the tempest to measure Of what the spectrum involves Maybe no one cares, party over here, I'll be over there Don't need no help, all by myself I used to hang around with rappers at the root of the scene It meant a lot to feel the fugitive community breathe Maybe to sentimentalize is to be truly naive I know some shit about your heroes that you wouldn't believe I think we're all a bunch of weirdos on a quest to belong The songs are echolocation up in impregnable fog That's why it's odd to see a pile of imperfections and flaws Ascend a pedestal to patronize the rest of the cogs And a mess of obnoxious fantasy, posturing and pageantry I ain't even mad, I'm impressed, shit it's baffling God almighty chop an ivory tower to piano keys Play your own dirge on the way to surfin' maggot beach You fuckin' dorks ain't a source of the art You can't be cooler than the corners Where you source all your parts The poker face, all it takes a couple sordid remarks We let the manticore out, We make the sorcery bark Life is so unfair, party over here, I'll be over there Don't need no help, all by myself I view the rattling of sabres like a show to expose Insecurities exploding in emotional code With braggadocio to go from mostly jokey to gross Corrode a homie til his probity is notably ghost Before the hobby was a job he was a manager, Hell You would wobble round your momma like an infant gazelle The disillusionment has truly been a difficult pill That you was anything menacing is a difficult sell In a whistle-and-bellorama, black mollies to dress up like piranha It's not even compelling melodrama It's a comedy, somebody wanna shop you as a saga I'm very voluntarily persona non grata You fuckin' dorks ain't the leaders we need This ain't the medium for divas out to weasel and breed I'm off in coffee with the paupers over tea with the queen Don't make 'em show the regency what disobedient means Heavy load to bear, party over here, I'll be over there Don't need no help, all by myself

Absolutely loved the conversation sparked by the song. Favorite Aesop reaction yet, and Aesop is what brought me to your channel in the first place. Aesop’s label (Rhymesayers Entertainment) is actually pretty awesome from what bit I know about it. Definitely like them way more than the “big ones.” “It was co-founded in 1995 by Sean Daley (Slug), Anthony Davis (Ant), Musab Saad (Sab the Artist) and Brent Sayers (Siddiq).” They’re pretty hands on too. If I remember correctly, Slug personally sent one of their then-new releases on vinyl to one of the most enthusiastic Aesop reactors I know of (Mr. WaCK).

here's what's crazy about Aesop: he's got all these "make you think about the Heavy Shit" songs, right? but he's also got lighter songs about his kitten (Kirby), going to therapy for the first time (Shrunk), and what it might be like to be an otter- I am dead serious, a goddamn otter- (My Belly) and they all go the same level of hard, and they all have the same unfolding wordplay and then there's Klutz, which is just Old Man Rambling but in song form. btw you should react to all of those :V

Most truly great music is not necessarily the stuff that blows up the airwaves at the time. It's the stuff that endures. It's pretty much always been this way, in my experience. Mainstream record labels push materialism because they want us to buy shit. So the music they push hardest is the most surface level stuff. They figure it has the broadest appeal because even an idiot can get on its level. What's rarely pushed is intellectually stimulating material, because it requires something of the listener. We have to be willing to engage with it, in order for it to engage with us. And the major record labels have a consistent view of the average music consumer as intellectually lazy. The deep thinkers and lyrical heavy hitters seldom if ever rise to the top of the charts. In ANY genre of popular music. But they ultimately become legends. Aesop Rock is a legend in progress.

FDA-certified 100% pure underground NYC hip-hop cultivated from the original seed. This is the most really-real shit there is. True art. It's not just rap with a quality problem--it's all genres and all media. An enormous portion of the blame falls on the avaricious purveyors of the empty husks that pass for entertainment and news, absolutely. The other side of that coin is the consumers who lap up all the hollow mass-market detritus like dogs licking scraps off the floor, then looking eagerly up to their owners, drooling, waiting for another crumb to fall. But unlike dogs, we have agency and collective power, and we've got to demand better. The soapbox is now free.
