Come Across an Aggressive Swan on the River? Here's What to do! SUP | Stand Up Paddle Boarding UK

Around this time of year you're bound to come across a family of swans whilst out and about on the river. Whilst the cygnets are young/swans are nesting, they can become very defensive/aggressive if you get too close! 🏄🏼‍♂️
On this occasion a few splashes was enough to keep them at bay but in the past I have had them come a lot closer and not give in so easily! 💦
Always give them a wide berth and you can portage around them if necessary! 🙌🏼

A Canadian goose assaulted me a few of weeks ago. It was my second SUP trip, and it was both terrifying and unexpected. The goose was hissing and pecking at the SUP, and I was defending myself with the paddle, going on my knees to prevent falling into the water, and wasn't moving (a bad idea). Someone observed my situation and recommended me to move as quickly as possible and also explain why this was happening - I had no idea that it was a nesting season (my fault). There's a mum dad and 6 kid swans living on the knowsthorpe stretch of canal in leeds, daddy always gives an escort and shows he's hard with his wings out but is never aggressive.🙂

You’ve been lucky then! They are normally alright but they can get aggressive/protective when they have young cygnets around. Normally start of summer
