Paul McCartney… the man knows how to get songs to the top of the charts. I was floored when I found out Peter & Gordon’s #1 hit “World Without Love” was written for them by Paul as well.

It was given to them rather written for them. Paul had written it earlier and hadn't used it as John Lennon kept laughing at the "Please, lock me away." line.

Badfinger also got their name from Paul McCartney and John Lennon (in a roundabout way). John and Paul's song "With A Little Help From My Friends" that was sung by Ringo Starr on the Sgt. Pepper LP had a working title of "Badfinger Boogie". John had hurt his forefinger and was playing the piano keys using his middle finger in place of his forefinger. The boys liked the sound of "Badfinger" to replace their current name "The Ivey's" and the name was born.

wonderful! thanks for this. I was surprised when I found out this was Tom Evans on lead vocals, because it does sound richer than his normal voice. The slowed down tape explains that. would have loved to hear pete hams attempt! also, I think Paul was terrific. a perfectionist, yes, but you can't argue with great success. he did allow people a little wiggle room with their parts towards the end, and wasn't an absolute control freak. what a fantastic band badfinger were!

Originally, Paul went in early before a Beatles session and recorded all the parts himself on the demo. There is some bootlegs of that demo here on Utube. Badfinger did a great job with it. I loved that song when i was a kid when it came out. Paul was actually making fun of Allen Klein always telling the Beatles he (allen) could get them money or something they wanted for nothing. Of course, Paul was subtle about that kind of thing where John would have flayed the dude wide open with a composition.

This sequence shows that the affableness of Paul is not just a front; he uses his good naturedness and ability to remain calm under stress to keep frustrations under control. The Iveys were obviously much more comfortable taking direction from Paul than John and George, as the film "Let It Be" shows.

Yes, there were a lot of takes, which would make people think Paul is being a perfectionist, but half-way through, he tells them that it would be better if they just fuck it. ie they need to loosen up and stop trying to copy the demo too closely. Plus he stopped the takes when HE fucked up, not to correct them.

He’s kind of a Nazi then isn’t he? He demands they do it EXACTLY his way. Then says stop trying to do it my way? You can see the frustrations mounting working with him. Same experience George, John and Ringo had from 1967-69. I don’t think Badfinger ever worked with Paul again after this.
