A drive around an estate in Milton Keynes called Netherfield on Wednesday, 19th October 2022.
Netherfield was originally built between 1972 and 1977, and I moved to Milton Keynes in 1977 and lived in 239 Broadlands. It's fair to say Netherfield has seen better days. On the day I filmed, the waste disposal men were coming around, so all the rubbish bags on the side were for them.
More information about Netherfield's history can be found here:-
www.livingarchive.org.uk/cont...
Date: Wednesday, 19th October, 2022
Recorded with GoPro Hero 11 Black - 4K60fps
Edited with Davinci Resolve
00:00 - Start of drive in street called Broadlands
02:09 - When we moved to Milton Keynes in 1977, we first lived in 239 Broadlands, just here on the left
02:24 - Streets have side alleys that allow you to get to the garages at the back of the houses.
02:41 - Used to ride my bike as a child up and down here.
03:58 - Moving into Farthing Grove
04:30 - We were all learner drivers once. I'm sure they thought it would be quiet, with no cars. ;-)
05:55 - There used to be an Owl and the Pussy Cat play park just to the right. Long gone.
06:33 - To the right, there used to be an old people's home. Now it's just a wasteland.
07:09 - Netherfield Local Shops
08:40 - Moving into The Hide
11:40 - Back in the day, this was a skateboard park with a ramp. Looks like they've just put tarmac over it and made it into some hill.
12:06 - Another one of those alleys
12:31 - Moving into Farmborough
14:02 - Locals using the grass as a car park
14:10 - Why is there a boat here?
15:51 - Moving into Beadlemead
19:41 - Moving into Langland Road
21:18 - Langland Primary and Middle School. 1st school we went to when we arrived in Milton Keynes
23:54 - Wow, gated community on Netherfield. This is Akerlea Close.
24:13 - Heading out of Netherfield on Buckland Drive
25:57 - V7 Saxon Street

Just to add, you can see that the original estates have been left to run down, personally i believe its been done on purpose. Those original estates had so much space and i can imagine developers hating that when they could cram on 3 or 4 times the amount of houses in the same space. Just my opinion.

I too moved to MK in 1977 to Eaglestone which was only half built. Even then it seemed most of MK was empty and barren. No city centre or all the eStates that are now here. I spent fair bit of time on Netherfield back as i had a friend that lived there. I loved MK back then before it started changing, a real shame. Have you done one on Fishermead ? I had friends on most of the estates surrounding Eaglestone when we first moved up.

Indeed. the Cotswolds is a cess pit in comparison. This was 'designed' by 'planners'!

When I lived in Bletchley I had friends that lived in netherfields and Bean Hill close by estate, both were temporary housing estates built for the workers /builders of the city I remember Netherfields being corogated metal looking back then in the 1970s, they have matured somewhat and look better with those trees

Netherfield ... NeverGoThere. Lol I cycled through there, on a very hot day, many years ago. On one of the streets, most of residents were out in their front gardens, getting drunk, smoking weed, making a noise, and blaring out loud music. A couple of houses had their TV in the front garden! It was surreal. I'm sure there are many decent people living there, but I only tend to notice the A-holes.

I would imagine living there leads to depression. There's no public space... nowhere for the children, no park.... just cars and car parks and badly maintained roads.

To the review that said they where built in the 60s. Wrong built from about 1972 on to about 1977. They where designed by a group of young architects obviously they came up with these designs of houses that should have been up for 10 years maximum but 50 years later they are still standing.

They were built with a design life in excess of 70 years - these were non trad build but were never considered temporary. The pictures of them new with splashes of colour gave them a very futuristic look and feel. In terms of low rise Netherfield is quite unique for its architecture and design - the allocation of public maintained space would be considered absurd today even if it was reduced by 3/4's.

Is this meant to be as utterly bleak as it looks? At least all the locals are smiling and happy……. This might be the most depressing thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some grim things.

The amount of green space is amazing and makes up somewhat for the houses - odd MKCC clearly converted a good number from flat roof (well actually inverse flat with a central box gutter) to metal roofed pitch and then stopped. The roads would shame a third world nation and the general upkeep of what I assume are the private rentals is appaling. Fascinating pice of history just glad I do not have to live there albeit I can think of worse places.

?? I see potholed roads... no parkland or playing field or children's play area. The way the barracks are spread out makes any community life difficult. The houses rather being straight lines could have curved round a village green with some local amenities... but no.. this is car city wasteland

My word! This is HORRIBLE so dilapidated and third world...It is a beautiful late Summer early Autumn's day - will never look better than this. It looks like some sort of prisoner camp. Thousands of acres of beautiful country destroyed for this? Do the planners live here - town councillors? Cars everywhere... no bus stops .... how can those with no cars get about? If you are old and very young and its raining..... Where are the shops.. the health services, the cafés, the art galleries, the gyms....the swimming pool...a school, a crèche a hairdressers? Answer there aren't. I saw nothing that would make a community....Do the planners live here? Why not? I see potholed roads... no parkland or playing field or children's play area. The way the barracks are spread out makes any community life difficult. The houses rather being straight lines could have curved round a village green with some local amenities... but no.. this is car city wasteland
