Oh my gosh....I'm struggling through a divorce (very amicable thankfully) but being reminded that there are expectations in a covenant relationship is helping to heal my heart today, as I remember there were reasons why things are where they are right now, and it helps to keep my heart from looking backward and accepting what is and having more peace about where I'm at. Thank you for the real life examples you guys draw on. They're very helpful.

I used to say, when a situation gets to: “it’s complicated”, then the adversary is probably involved. Now I have seen the change for “It’s complicated” is the result of someone’s agency, and probably the careful influence of the adversary. It’s hard, when you live and honor and reverence your covenants; you have been aware of and kept your accountability with intent to have a strong relationship, but your spouse’s agency chooses a path you know is wrong. Speaking of and learning more about our covenants and learning of their Eternal value and the Promises of the Lord are what is “real”, helps to calm and bless the contrite (crushed) heart.

I had a thought this morning as I was listening to Exodus 18. My thought was, Moses wasn't raised in a gospel centered home but his father in law Jethro was. When Jethro saw what was happening to Moses and how weary he was becoming, he took it upon himself to teach him and in doing so, helped him to delegate his responsibilities. Just a thought. Thanks so much.

I always have loved in Exodus 20:20 the footnote "e" that tells of this Hebrew translation- "Because respect for Him will always be present with you, you will not sin." It reminds me of Pres. Nelson inviting us to become "sin-resistant." It also gives insight as to how, which is to keep a reverence for Christ. I strive for this particularly when partaking of the sacrament.

When you talked about "holy rhythms" and learning how to come into sanctification each day, I thought of conversations I've had in the past couple of days with friends, some members of the church and some not believers at all, and they're flippancy with the Easter season. Theirs is all about the Easter Bunny. it hurt my heart listening to them, no Jesus at all in that celebration. 💔 I am so grateful for my Savior Jesus Christ, that He has ALREADY Saved me and Rescued me and Set Me Free!❤️✝️ I so want to obey Him and live fully and faithfully in my covenants and recognize His light and glory in my life every day!🌤️ Thank you for your teaching and testifying of HIM. I am loving seeing my Savior in my Old Testament studies this year! ❤️

I came across this idea that we carry a spiritual burden and it sounded so incongruous. I’ve been searching the scriptures to find a scripture to back that idea. Until now I have missed it. But today. Oh, I’m just so happy to have this lesson in my heart. We do carry a false idea that we should (a form of fear) love God. But the truth is because of this order of grace and the covenant relationship i.e. expectation and privilege - moving from a place of fear of God is not true at all. These ideas free us from feeling like we have to do something (keep commandments and the billion of other requirements in our church) to get His love and blessings! This story is the proof I have been searching for, but without your explanation I WOULD HAVE MISSED IT. There just are not words to thank you both enough.

I was assembling your Easter box for my seminary lesson- I teach 4 ym at lunchtime , then got asked to sub an em seminary class the same day, and the yw teaching the Sunday lesson couldn’t make it at the last minute, so I shared it there today (also had a yw read David’s post about Palm Sunday!! Thank you for talking about unconditional love. So many people think that means they can do what they want and still receive the fullness of gods love and blessings. Just like a marriage, you can not feel or have full love unless you love by certain conditions (honesty, trust, commitment, kindness, fidelity, etc.) Love grows and expands when it's mutual and so it is with God. I personally like to say real love instead of unconditional. His love is real, unfailing and always available because he always lives by it's principles but we can't receive it unless we love by those same principles.

For me, God's unconditional love is better understood as a parent than as a spouse. God loves us, as his children, unconditionally. But there are certain privileges (blessings) that are conditional on us following the rules

Yes! I don’t see my relationship with God in parallel to my spouse or to other people outside my family, whom I care about. We have been taught that God is our father and my understanding of his love for me is better represented in my relationship with my children. I DO love them unconditionally, nothing they do will ever change that. The quality of our relationship though, is dependent on what we both put it into it.

I see where you’re coming from, but I think a marriage example is appropriate also because we have to choose to covenant with our spouse and we have to choose to covenant with the Lord. Our children don’t make a covenant With us as parents.

But if we choose to break our covenants with our Father, he will still be our father and his love will always be available to us. We may lose privileges and opportunities, but we will not cease to be his children.

I think it is important to remember that Jethro was a priesthood leader. Sometimes I have heard of someone saying to another, "you're not going to accept that calling, are you? You really don't have time, that's going to be too much." I think counseling with a priesthood leader is good, and deciding how to best share responsibilities...I think we learn from callings and having to rely on the Lord for extra strength...but sometimes things are done by the same ten people because others aren't given the opportunity to serve or aren't willing to serve. It is important that we remember that we need those self refill moments. Christ fasted and prayed 40 days. Alma took Amulek home and ministered to him...how can we lift and truly sustain one another. I love how you talked about recognizing others' talents and helping them to flourish. Loved how you pointed out those 5 perspectives by Jethro.

My wife & I converted to LDS just over 4 years ago. As I had not studied any religious literature, I have been trying to learn what I can, even though I have issues with remembering things. Which has has been frustrating when I try to read the weekly topic for Adult Sunday school, or Preisthood meetings. You have a way of explaining things where I get a better "grip" of the lesson. The workbook is an excellent study guide and feel fortunate to have been able to get one this year. With that said, is there a sign up sheet to order direct for next year ? Sadly, Deseret store is usually sold out by the time we get there.

I love that as Jethro is delivering Moses’ family he recognizes that Moses doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to them with his current set up. In my mind, Jethro wants to make sure his daughter and grandkids also get love and attention from the prophet and Moses is able to handle both responsibilities.

One thing I thought about about while you both were discussing Jethro counseling with Moses was because Moses was devoting all of his time to the children of Israel, it had to have been a strain on his wife and children. It could have been causing tension in his family life. My speculation is that Moses was overburdened but not sure how to handle everything and God probably sent Jethro in answer to his prayers to give him guidance and direction. There have been times when God has sent me people to counsel with when I have been overburdened with tasks. He has helped make my burden lighter or has given me ideas on how I can better delegate some of the responsibilities to others so I am not carrying it all. I think this is also a great reason why we are told to have family councils.

Per the early discussion about the City of Enoch: Based on a hymn, "Thou Earth", by Eliza R. Snow--that is no longer in the hymnals--not just the city of Enoch went up, but a part of the earth with it and when the City of Enoch is returned, the earth will be whole again. As a close, personal friend of Joseph Smith, one can assume she learned that tidbit from him. It's also interesting to note that the scriptures don't say God took the "people of Enoch" but He took the "City of Enoch" (Moses 8:7) The Bible Dictionary also says "his entire city was translated".

I know this might sound a little crazy, but in my imagination I see the entire City of Enoch, buildings and all, going up into heaven and being preserved in order for it to come back down as the base, or the beginning, of the New Jerusalem. I also have always imagined that the City of Enoch is where the legend of Atlantis came from. Could be true, could be false. I am looking forward to finding out 😜.

I love what is shared about relationship and marriage and "making others happy". Kindness really is important. I would add that if you are in a relationship of any kind with an addict, these rules apply differently because addicts (because of the disease/"wiring " of their brains due to their addiction, don't have the capacity to give back and create a balance. Addict brains are wired to "take'. No amount of kind deeds from a loved one will fill their need and you can find yourself in a destructive spiral as you try to give and give but get nothing in return. So be very careful in how you apply what is said about relationships in this episode to your own life. Every situation is different. ❤️ And as a side note, addictions can be overcome and relationships can be healed but be careful about the intentions behind your actions and expectations. 😃

I always pictured that the people, buildings and everything went up to heaven, but that’s because as a child, my parents had a book about bible stories that showed the buildings going up in the sky. I'm not trying to stir up anything, but this pops up in my head all the time and I have the same question again and again every time this channel shows up on my feed, and it has been like this since I was introduced to this channel about two years ago. Question is, is there a reason behind why David is mostly positioned in the center of the camera view whereas Emily seems to always be pushed a little to the right? It's not a big deal, but I love both their perspectives and insights equally. Emily definitely contributes equally to what's being said, if not more, in every video. So I'm just wondering. Sorry, I really can't help it and it feels like a thorn on my side that cannot resolve/dissolve on its own.I know this post might not sit well with some viewers but every time a still of a new video pops up on my feed and every single time the still features David positioned right in the center and Emily is always pushed against the very side of the still image and most of the time she's not even "completely" in the frame. I don't know, I feel like I need to ask this question so I'm not bugged by it to no end every time it pops up on my feed.

Do you really believe you can MAKE other people happy? Is it really anyone else’s responsibility for someone else’s happiness? Putting expectations on your spouse is trying to control them. We can only control ourselves. We are not responsible for other’s feelings. I’m not saying we should go out of our way to harm others, but saying we are responsible for the happiness of others, seems like a violation of Article of Faith 2. I think these ideas are part of the reason that culturally the church is very toxic at times. We can absolutely love, serve, and care about others, but we cannot be responsible if they choose not to be happy. We forget one of the, if not the most important blessings we have, which is agency.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that is what Emily was trying to communicate. Of course we can't decide or control how someone else will feel or act, but it brings richness to a relationship to do things for each other that through reason and experience we can guess will give them a moment of warmth or happiness. It won't always have the effect we hope for, but if we never extend effort or acts of service then what is the point of relationship? And yes, we have to take other things into consideration like our own well-being (like our capacity to give or whether the other party also has our best interest in mind), and not doing "nice" things to manipulate someone. It's not an easy topic to convey in few words, so I can see how it is miscommunicated and misunderstood regularly in conversations in church and elsewhere.
