Oh how I love these lessons! I’m in the primary and miss Sunday school- these lessons fulfill that for me! Thank you so much for sharing your depth of understanding! It has changed my life! I feel like Bathsheba should be a hero! I used to think of her as a sinful woman- but she didn’t do anything wrong. David wasn’t supposed to be there- I really think she thought she was privately bathing. In that time, if a king requested a woman- the woman didn’t really have a choice- it says she mourned the loss of Uriah- she loved him…. Then SHE was the mother of Solomon! She was the one with him in the details of the days teaching him to love and know God. She’s my hero! I hope I can raise my sons and daughters the way she raised Solomon. 💕

King David was one of my heroes as a kid. He slew Goliath! He was so humble! He was passionate in his service to God! He wasn’t afraid to change! But I cried as an early teen when I realized that David was the same David who saw Bathsheba and lusted after her. I hated that, and stopped considering David a hero. Now as an adult who has struggled with porn, I love and understand David even more. It is a sad story, but David is still a man I look up to greatly.

Thank you for saying this. I too really struggle to reconcile the younger and older Davids as the same man, knowing the choices he made later in life. But he will receive grace from Jesus Christ, as we all will, so it's our duty to be as kind and forgiving as we can be. I'm sorry for your struggles. Sending you a virtual hug. :-)

@@lizkasper thank you! Hugs right back! Although I wouldn’t trade my struggles for anything. It has shape who I have become and put me in a position to help 9 close friends and family members start the path to recovery. Without airing too much of my dirty laundry, porn ruined my first marriage (that was to a non member, who I married when she was 4 months pregnant) we ended up getting a divorce and I started my path to recovery. At this point I’ve been sober since April of 2019. I met a girl who got baptized in October 2019, we got married in November, and then sealed in December 2020. I wouldn’t be sealed to my amazing wife if it hadn’t been for my struggles and subsequent recovery. Now I continue to fight for that freedom everyday

Thank you! After chatting with friends of other Christian faiths, I have often thought we should spend 2 years on the Old Testament. There are so many stories and insights we miss when, for example, King David's life is covered in just 2 lessons, amidst other important events. How can we have good conversations with Christians & Jews of other denominations when our Sunday School knowledge of the Bible is fsirly cursory & covers only 'LDS favorites'? When those of the Jewish faith revere King David so highly, it stunts our ability to relate. With our focus, he is only the Goliath slayer. then the adulterous covenant breaker. His story, his relationships, his life are so much more complex & relatable than that. I appreciate your focus on his strong friendship with Jonathan.

I think that the quote by Joseph Smith that Emily is referring to is this one: “Let us here observe, that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation . . . It was through this sacrifice [of all earthly things], and this only, that God has ordained that men should enjoy eternal life; and it is through the medium of the sacrifice of all earthly things that men do actually know that they are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of God. When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has for the truth’s sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice because he seeks to do his will, he does know, most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not, nor will not seek his face in vain. Under these circumstances, then, he can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life.” Joseph Smith, Lectures on Faith, pp. 6-7

Reading the Bible Dictionary account of David just breaks my heart. "Like Saul he was guilty of grave crimes; but unlike Saul, he was capable of true contrition and was therefore able to find forgiveness, except in the murder of Uriah. As a consequence David is still unforgiven, but he received a promise that the Lord would not leave his soul in hell. He will be resurrected at the end of the Millennium. Because of his transgressions, he has fallen from his exaltation." I just heard a Conference talk where the speaker mentioned mortality being a mere nanosecond in the full span of our lives, and I think about how incredibly sad it is that David's choices here have rippled into eternity and kept him from the reward he might have had. It's hard to believe the slayer of Goliath and the idle king are the same man...but, so it goes for us all sometimes, I suppose.

I use your timeline board for seminary, and am trying to follow the location of your pieces, so we can catch up in the fall and insert all the pieces we missed. It's a little tricky, especially now that, as you mentioned, it will become more complex. Question: do you have a picture of a completed board that I can refer to? OR, at the very least don't blur out the board and overlay it with a picture of the pieces while you place them on the board! -- They are small and it is hard to figure out where you put them after-the-fact. (*I haven't purchased any of your "stuff" that you sell along with DMT; maybe that's where I find the answer to my question.)

Your last story…., I have a neighbor, I used to adore her and think she was wonderful, until 10 years ago we had a Misunderstanding. I’ve tried to forgive her and work things out with her, but she will have none of it. This last weekend while my husband was on the riding lawnmower mowing our field, mowing along the barbwire Fence line that borders their property, he ran over some Barbwire. Destroying our riding lawnmower. He has mowed this field many many times without any problem. But this is the first time he has mowed since they had some men come and fix the Barbwire fence. I’m not blaming her, but I wanted her to know that there was Barbwire left and it was now wound up in the bottom of our riding lawnmower. So I text her to let her know, and she told me there’s been Barbwire fence there for 100 years and it probably just is old Barbwire that has been there forever. Their guys would not have left Barbwire on our property. I wanted to scream…. But listening to your podcast, I just replied “you’re probably right” Super hard to forgive people and let things go, but somewhere in her life she must feel like she needs to be so defensive and ornery. I will just continue to try and forgive.
