The cast of Come From Away perform at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard.
Based on a true story, Come From Away is about the 38 planes of passengers who were diverted to
Newfoundland, Gander after the airspace closed following 9/11. The Gander community opened their homes, churches, schools and community centres for the “come from aways” and the show shares some of the stories that took place.
The show was nominated for nine Olivier Awards, including; Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Clive Carter and Robert Hands), Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Rachel Tucker) and Mastercard Best New Musical.
You can book tickets to see Come From Away here: officiallondon...
The Olivier Awards with Mastercard were held in the spectacular Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 7 April 2019. Hosted by Jason Manford, the ceremony celebrates the best of British theatre from the previous year. UK viewers can watch the full show on ITV player. (www.itv.com/hu...)

Those saying about the accents sounding Irish. According to things I've read around a quarter of Newfoundland have Irish ancestry. A lot came for the fishing industry and never left. Also from the English coasts too. Some of the music in the show seems to have a heavy Irish influence too.

Canadian with a Newfie boyfriend here, can confirm, Newfoundland has a lot of Celtic influence (and it REALLY shows in Newfie music, case and point being Great Big Sea). That said, these accents do sound slightly more Irish than Newfie to me, though it may just be this particular performance (after all, we don't get to hear "yer" or "Jesus b'y" used in this song). Still infinitely better than some attempts at Newfoundland accents that I've heard over the years though.

Hello everyone! Canadian here with 50% of my family coming from The Rock. Newfoundland was divided in which country came to which region of the province. It was also the last province to join Canada and so the accents are much more preserved than others. In the Northern areas of Newfoundland and the Avalon Peninsula, which houses St. John's, the capital, were settled by the English. While the southern part of Newfoundland was settled by the Irish. These accents get swirled around into different Newfie accents, but if they sound more Irish, there is a good chance they didn't come directly from Gander, as it would sound less Irish, so far north (see link 1 to hear a similar accent). They pull off the accents to anyone who isn't well versed in the Newfie accent, including adding additional consonants and turns of phrase such as "loves 'im" and the way "car" is pronounced. They way Gander is said however is off, the 'r' was too harsh at the end, and was definitely more Irish than Newfie. These accents are pretty good though as Newfie accents are so distinct and regional and a lot of pronunciation depends on the area you grew up in. There are a lot of bad Newfie accents done so all in all it is a good Newfie accent. If you want to learn a little about how Newfie's speak, listen to these two clips, Alan Hawco from CBC's Republic of Doyle (a St.John's accent), and Political Comedian Rick Mercer in Fogo Island (more Irish sounding accents): kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3mlZGWioZx2m5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKnOc5yXds-ksNE The music to comes from a very celtic/irish background. However, instruments such as the squeeze box, are very distinct to Newfoundland folk music and kitchen parties, which sound very similar to Irish music. If you listen to Great Big Sea, a Newfie band, or a song from a Kitchen Party: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJvFqIB7ebiaj6M you'll see where Come From Away was grabbing it's inspiration as it is a very deeply rooted part of Newfoundland culture. Sorry for the novel here, TL;DR (There isn't one! Oops...)

I ADORE Come from Away. I also ADORE Six. I am not comparing the two. I am not commenting on who might have deserved the awards. I wish everyone could have gone home with one. However, I do think it is very interesting that Six is a distinctly English story and won none of the awards they were nominated for and yet Come from Away is a distinctly American story and won...nine? Goodness gracious, this is a beautiful show.

I LOVE this show! Such a wonderful , heartfelt and uplifting show. But one thing I couldn't help but think was how America screwed that up. The world stood behind America on September 11th. Then come the extraordinary renditions, torture, illegal invasions , drone strikes and forever war. All those feeling came up when they talked about the moment of silence in the gas station and then when the Egyptian was searched.

Newfoundland Canada. Typically their accents are a little more toned down. Newfoundland English or “Newfie” is heavily influenced by the Irish and English (and a little Scottish) since y’all “discovered” it and called it New-Found-Land. I know, it shocking that Canada can have an accent. We love our Newfie’s.
