You need a miners helmet with a light on it to hang next to the cellar door, for when you go out there. Love, love, love your root cellar!

On a serious note...nice harvest!! I'm just one person...so I do have to work out how much I need before it doesn't become waste when growing produce in the garden!!

Suggestions: Have your husband drill holes in sides of your wooden crates and make small rope handles for easier handling for everyone. Set up metal open-air shelving, like oven racks, in the root cellar to sit your cubes on to have more floor space. Use another one for all the squashes and root veggies. Might keep down moulds & spores spreading. Just found your channel and love it. Love your big family. Will love going back to your beginning videoes over winter. (I'm 77 years old and has 3 boys & 3 girls.) Brings back so many memories!!! Blessings and protection for you all.

I absolutely LOVE your root cellar!! There is one at a house hear here (not anything like yours I'm sure) but I still gaze longing at it every time I drive by it. Fantastic garden ❤️ours is doing fantastic as well. We just got a lot of rain so the weeds got ahead of us. We also have 3 apricot trees that are absolutely loaded!! We have a 100 year old apple tree that my husbands Great Grandparents planted that is still producing and a plum tree. Time to get out there and pick and put it all up.

Kate always impresses me with how helpful and great she is. And, your youngest is adorable. All your kids are great, but they are the 2 we see the most. Oh, those puppies. ❤ garden is fantastic. How did the kids' pool turn out?

I try to keep the kids out of the videos for the most part. A few little snippets now and then is the most I do these days. Kate is 17 and makes the choice herself to be on camera. The pool was a bit of a fiasco and needed to be taken down and will be reinstalled next summer,.

You are so lucky to not have the cabbage moth, very jealous, I can't grow any of the kales or cabbages without covers. So pretty when they are just out in the garden.

Hi Chelsea, we have also had a lot of rain in Scotland but not much heat or sun. My cauliflower all bolted when they were only the size of a coin. But my Golden Acre summer cabbage has done ok. I harvested today my first red cabbage Rouge Tete Noir. I have no root cellar so I freeze them and ferment them. My runner beans are ok and I also have a few not climbing purple flat beans that are doing well, but I only have about 6 plants of each. My courgettes are doing fine but a lot of the winter squashes are falling off after a few days. I think that they are not pollinated enough. My early potatoes have done fine, but my main crop are dying off too soon, so not a very good harvest for them. All of them grown in 10 litre pots or 4 potatoes in a 30 litre pot. My tomatoes are doing ok and I have made my first batch of tomato sauce. Thanks for showing your garden and harvest. Eveline

Hand pollinating squash is really easy if you want to give it a try? Just take the male flowers, the ones without the fruit at the base and rub the stamen (the bit with the pollen) inside the fruiting flower.❤️

I just happened to come across your delightful video, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the way you store your harvest . I have always wanted a root cellar, because I too love growing so many root veggies. I have a cold room and it says very cold through the winter months,but come early summer it gets warm. I live in SO Oregon @ about 4,444ft elevation and it's hard to find the right above ground veg because of the frosts That sneek up on you every once in a while, anyway God bless you and your family looking forward to more of your videos. Welcome!!! The ticks can be really bad in some areas, particularly in the long grasses in the spring, but in other areas, like where we are, we only see a few every year. Are you out towards Horsefly? They really aren’t bad out there.

It would be a great way to store it and use in winter soups and stews and casseroles and it will last longer and hold its nutrients.

Can these less than ideal tasting old veggies be fed to livestock? Is there any nutritional value to it? Could you give the tops to chickens or geese? Thanks

The livestock are getting their normal feed and these extra veggies if they want to munch on them. I’d only use them as feed in case of an emergency - I just like knowing how long things and store and still be edible, even if a little. Nutritionally deficient. And yes, I have some tops to the ducks and chickens, but there was way more than they could eat so I completed the rest to make soil for next years garden.

Totally distracted by the rather large spider on her right arm at 14:28 Do y'all eat your turnip and beet greens? They are delicious and a free bonus to all your hard work. Beet greens are basically just chard (both plants are from the same family) and can be cooked and frozen just like chard can.
