Onions are also handy for first aid. When we had a deep cut my Mom would cut an onion, and peel the thin membrane from between the layers, the wrap that over the cut. She would change it daily, and it always healed very well, without scars

👍 strawberry blight plant produces leaves that taste like spinach. To get bigger onions cut off their leaves before they flower... They will then regrow leaves and produce a bigger onion. Female asparagus plants make round orange seeds that hang off the leaves.

Aww Chelsea, you a a the true mother of nature. Love your garden and know how much work has gone into the making of your garden. So informative. Unfortunately here in Australia and where I live ! we are wanting rain desperately. All around is so dry and bushfires are a constant threat. The wind has become almost unbearable and temperatures are already soaring and it is only spring. We have our second level water restrictions and the dams are so low. Your videos bring joy and allows me to visualise what a true vege garden is like. Thankyou. Take care and enjoy those beautiful children xxxxxx

AFTER dehydrating kale, I put dried kale in my little food processor my Bullet, grind some into a powder and add the powder into the homemade noodles I make. I have considered using other dehydrated veggies too. Squash comes to mind! Beef and noodles and chicken noodles become tasty and are just another way to add veggies into your meal. Love your videos they are beautiful. While you were discussing and showing those great onions an unusual bird that was chatting chirpy bird was in the background. Could it have been a whippoorwill? It is a bird I am unfamiliar with. Learning is so exciting and along with watching and learning from what is presented this darling bird was adding to the beauty of your video! If you could share that would be lovely. Thank you for sharing your harvest...it is beautiful!

I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos. I really enjoy making them for you all. The bird in the background was a male turkey chirping away. Most people think they just gobble, but they also make that chirping sounds, sometimes as a sign of aggression, but in this case he was just chatting with his mate. 😊

In other videos I've watched people cut the squash/pumpkins from the vine either side of the neck of the fruit, so that your left with a sort of T shaped piece. This stops the fruit from rotting from the top where the stalk joins the fruit. They also say they store theirs in a cool place that is t damp or touched by frost. Good luck with storing. By the way what an abundance of great looking harvest, well done. 👍🤓 wood chips or straw might help with the weeds !?

Thanks for the tomato soup recipe.. You are right, that and a grilled cheese sandwich is just about the best thing ever! I always make that meal when i am sick, or just need some comfort food. My mom always made it for us when we were kids and weren't feeling well. I have quite a collection of tomato seeds and need to add black cherry to it. I also watch a homesteading channel from Sweden and he was talking about what he called Homesteaders Black Cherry tomatoes. They were truly black, though. I've seen some in different seed catalogs, but winder if they are the same thing. I love cherry tomatoes! I learned to cut them in half and dehydrate them and they are SO GOOD as snacks. The flavor is very concentrated in them when dry. I truly enjoy every one of your videos. Your are living the life that i WISH i was..

Your garden reminds me of something very important I’d forgotten or just not connected. Then two of your comments brought up what is good news for people moving further north. That is that the further north of the 31st Parallel the longer summer days are (likewise the shorter winter days.) So we have a 14+ hour day at summer solstice and and 10 hour day at winter solstice. Your growing season is much more intense because of the extra long days. The abundance shows! In fact check with your seed supplier on the varieties you’ve not succeeded to grow because some varieties say of onions need long days and others are graded as “short day” meaning short summer days. My farm is almost dead on the 31st Parallel which is the border line for Alabama/Florida and Louisiana/Mississippi. I’m always fascinated by all the intense growth. It’s gorgeous. Also that orange squash is kin to a variety that grows extremely well in the Deep South. We call ours “Seminole Pumpkins” although they are squash in fact. Seminole Natives and others grew them in antiquity as they store fir months and taste delicious. Wonder if squash have long and short day bias? Thanks for your contributions on KZbin. Bob

What a great tour. Your hardy kiwis look quite healthy. When you transplant the smaller one in spring I would encourage you to plant it 20ft away from the other plant. These plants are quite vigorous and require a strong trellis to grow on. Don't give up on them if you don't see fruit for several years. It took mine 4 years to fruit here in my zone 7 location.

@@LittleMountainRanch I'm wondering that as well. I planted mine entirely too close together and they eventually crushed the trellis I had them on. It could be they won't get so huge in your area. I sadly decided to take them out last year as it was becoming too difficult for me to take care of them. There is much more information on caring for them now than there was when I planted mine. I'll keep watching to see how yours do.

It is a lot of work, but many hands make it pretty light. I find that my role is often in organizing and delegating, rather than hands on with every aspect of the work that is required. Oops...I hit the wrong thing and wasn't done chatting so I guess this will be considered edited. Your gardens have done super this growing season of that you can be very proud of your growing skills. I think your Swiss chard is worthy of a framed wall print its so beautiful with color...tastes great too I'll bet. I'll have mine with a pat of butter, some black pepper and a healthy dose of vinegar just for all those healing properties I always try to keep in my diet to give my sad back a boost. I've been following you right along all summer but been busy about the business of all things Jack. Hunny got quite sick and spent some time in the hospital so we are playing catch up on all our pre-winter buttoning up. All is good now so I thought it time to reach out and tell you I'm still here!!! I just finished up 6 bushel of tomatoes, a bushel of peaches and a 1/2 bushel of beets that I pickled. So I'm glad I'm not the last of the home canning Mamas out there. Asparagus is a real challenge but well worth the effort. I used to plant it as a young girl..as a job...for the local farmers and trust me I can eat it all day long but planting is NOT my fondest memory...just sayin'. I hope you will have many a good meal from all your growing efforts this summer...look forward to seeing "some cook with me" vlogs this winter. Hope that all is well with "the Moms" and Farmer Dan too. Those kids with all their shrieks and giggles in the background just melt my heart, I tell you it is something I will NEVER tire of. Happy gardening and mostly happy harvesting my Up North friend!!!:):):)

VICKI!!! I always miss you when you don't comment, although i totally understand how life can get busy. I'm sorry to hear about Jack, but happy that he's doing better now. It's quite a trick to film a video around here without lots of background noise so it's good to know you don't mind. Lots of love to both you and Jack from your LMR family up north. xx

I love watching your videos so I can see what else I might grow as our climates are very similar. This year we had a colder summer, so my tomatoes did not put out much and only a handful have actually ripened so far. I don't have a greenhouse yet. My spaghetti squash exploded this year. I have harvested about 70 and there are many more coming along. I also had a stellar green bean harvest. I have put up 88qts so far with more beans to pick. Where do you get the Cinderella pumpkin seeds from? I have grown the orange smoothie pumpkin from T&T seeds and it is a smaller sweet pumpkin. Mine have yet to start turning orange, I will wait till the frost kills the plant before picking. I am hoping the frost hold off till at least next week so things get just a bit more time

Great, I love your garden and I always wonder how you get everything done with your kids, homeschooling, gardening and the animals. We have started this kind of lifestyle three years ago. I love it but I see now how much work it is and that you have to be consistent of all things. Nice greetings from Germany :)

That is an amazing garden! Considering you are from zone 3, as we are, and love tomato soup, have you considered dehydrating a quantity of tomatoes and powderizing them for the winter? When you like some tomato soup, just add water, rice, barley, or your favourite herbs and veg. Just subbed! 👍😊

Just today I dug up what I was told was smooth sumac. Only to come across your video this evening and you showed your elderberry bush and it looks exactly like what I just ripped out of the ground. I had no idea what elderberry looked like till your video. I looked up elderberry and what the spring leaf blossom looks like and what I found was images of bud red elderberry. They are exactly what my spring leaf blossoms look like. My one bush was over seven feet tall and the other two were around four feet tall, and I just ripped them out. I am just sick that I was given wrong information from the University of Minnesota about what it was. Fortunately I have more growing from the upturned root mass of a box elder tree. I had the elder berry come up after a box elder and a pine tree were up rooted in a storm a couple years ago. I don't know of anyone in my neighbourhood with elderberry, so I assume they were dormant in the soil until the trees were uprooted. So much for trust the University to help me identify plants in my yard Thanks for the wonderful video. I too live in a zone 3 growing zone.

That’s too bad! I can understand the mistake, though, the leaves are super similar. Relieved for you that there’s more around. I can’t wait for mine to produce! Now to get them through the winter!

@@LittleMountainRanch You should have no trouble with them coming through the winter. Mine came through last winter with no winter die back at all. We had temps drop into the -50 range last winter and they blossomed out earlier than any of my other trees. The ones I pulled out yesterday I am going to cut way back and try putting them back in the ground to see if they will take again and also took some cutting to try to propagate. Keep up the nice work on your food forest. I am slowly getting my yard converted to all eatables.

@@LittleMountainRanch As you might know we eat a lot of curries so we make fish/prawn curries with these leaves or just plain mixed vegetables. You can also just fry tender leaves after boiling/steaming them a little...fry with oil garlic and dried red chillies! We sometimes also steam marinated fishes by wrapping them in the big leaves! 😊

Yes, it could be canned as long as you don't add the cream and use a pressure canner according to the manufacturers instructions.

Stephanie Corporandy tomatoes can be water bath canned for 55-60 minutes as long as doesn't have anything that requires pressure canning in the soup.
@LittleMountainRanch
@LittleMountainRanch 4 жыл бұрын
Because this recipe calls for butter it needs to be pressure canned, but yes, that's right for many tomato recipes. It's advisable to add 2 tbsp of lemon juice to your jars to bring up the acidity to safe levels when water bath canning.
