Description: Come Out, Ye Black and Tans is an Irish rebel song referring to the Black and Tans, or "special reserve constables", recruited in Great Britain and sent to Ireland in 1920, to reinforce the Royal Irish Constabulary during the Irish War of Independence. The song was written by Dominic Behan as a tribute to his Irish Republican Army Father Stephen, who had fought in the War of Independence; and is concerned with political divisions in working-class Dublin of the 1920s. The song uses the term "Black and Tans" in the pejorative sense against people living in Dublin, both Catholic and Protestant, who were pro-British. The most notable recording was in 1972 by the Irish traditional music group, The Wolfe Tones, which re-charted in 2020.

It would be funny if this Irish rebel song "Come Out, Ye Black and Tans" was sung by an Irish singer on the talent show "Britain's Got Talent". It would be even funnier if this video was shown in the background on the big screen. Although the songs "Go On Home British Soldiers" or "Rifles of the IRA" would be better because the songs are more unambiguous.

By the way, an explain for those who don't know the "Black and Tans" which were mentioned in the song! First! Although the song uses the term "Black and Tans" in the pejorative sense against the pro-British collaborators it is also a song against the Black and Tans themselves. Because if you despise the collaborators you naturally also despise the murderous gangs of the oppressors. So in the song the collaborators and the Black and Tans are made contemptuous. The Black and Tans (Irish na Dúchrónaigh), officially the Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserve, was one of two paramilitary groups in Ireland from 1920 to 1921. In January 1920 the British government launched a recruiting campaign for "men ready to do a tough and dangerous job" to support the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in increasingly anti-British Ireland. This government campaign was the idea of Winston Churchill, who was British Secretary of War at the time. As it turned out, there was no shortage of English recruits. Many of the English applicants were WWI veterans. In November 1921, the Black and Tans numbered about 9,500 men. This large number of men quickly led to a shortage of uniforms, so that new recruits were equipped with khaki army uniforms (usually just the pants) and dark green or blue British police uniforms. This mixture of colors led to the nickname "Black and Tans" (literally translated: black and brown), a reference to a well-known pack of hunting dogs from County Limerick. The name persisted even after the group received new uniforms. Officially, the Black and Tans - like the second group, the Auxiliary Division which was just as cruel and brutal - belonged to the Royal Irish Constabulary, but in fact they acted almost independently. Both groups served to suppress and combat Sinn Féin and the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and practiced pro-British state terrorism. In the summer of 1920 the Black and Tans devastated entire towns and villages in Ireland including: Tuam in County Galway, Trim, Balbriggan, Knockcroghery, Thurles, Templemore, Tralee. The center of Cork was burned down. Because of the crimes and atrocities they committed, many Irish still get emotional when Black and Tans are mentioned today. "Black and Tan" or "Tan" is still a derogatory term for the occupiers of Ireland today. (So for... the British) The Irish War of Independence is therefore often called the "Tan War".

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars On the contrary I have a great sense of humour which is why I was pissing myself laughing when I read your comment as the original song and meaning has absolutely nothing to do with the War of Independence or the Black and Tans during that war. 🤣

Can you do The Minstrel Boy or Wearing of the green and I am asking because these two songs are two of my favorite Irish rebel songs and these two songs are my favorite because you see I play the tenor drum in a bagpipe and drum band that is named after the 3rd battalion of the royal regiment of Scotland aka the black watch and my bands name is the Atlantic watch and every year in the month of March we play there two Irish songs along with other Irish songs but I would really love to see you do the minstrel boy because a lot of the lyrics have a special place in my heart and two great examples are the final two lines in the second verse and the Third verse and the final two lines in the second verse goes like this” Thy Songs were made for the pure and free, They shall never sound in slavery.” However the third verse wasn’t originally in the song instead it was written by an unknown author during the American civil war and the third verse is sometimes included in renditions of the song and the third verse goes like this” The Minstrel Boy will return we pray When we hear the news we all will cheer it, The minstrel boy will return one day, Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit. Then may he play on his harp in peace, In a world such as heaven intended, For all the bitterness of man must cease, And every battle must be ended.” And in the song when they mention the bitterness of man they aren’t just talking about man but about everyone.

@@michaeloconnell9476 i say englishman because well, the majority of the 19 to the late 20th century Ireland was under the control of England as part of the “United Kingdom” until their revolution/war for independence in which the Englishman tried to re-take control of ireland. So the ENGLISHMAN as left is a joke regarding english leaving ireland.
