Another one from the mad scientist! I think I learned more transcribing this tune than what I've learned in the last 3 months. On thing is sure, I learned that Ed's creativity have almost no limit. This tune is a perfect example of how bebop concepts can be applied to harmony, the whole tune have been reduced to a series of II - V. This open a lots of possibilities for altered harmonies and Ed grab every opportunities he have to add tensions. This said, if you look closer at the melodies over these crazy voicings, it is often very simple with very few alterations except some chromatism here and there. A lots of time Ed goes for the chord tonic than develop his melody starting from there. I just wanted to point that little observation. Quick note, I have remove the bass solo because it was 2 minutes of bass with inaudible guitar accompaniments and we are interested in guitar... I guess. Enjoy! (Don't hesitate to ask questions or share your observations, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Ed's playing, I also think I have a lot to share on the subject maybe I can help demystify some aspects of his playing style... just saying)

I remember Ed Bickert being dismissed as “Jim Hall Jr.”, as if Bickert was simply an imitator of Jim Hall. There is, of course, some similarity between the two such as their avoidance of flashy playing, and the two played together at least on one occasion (there was a CBC Radio broadcast of the two in the studio). Bickert once said that when working in a trio he saw his job as shaping the sound and filling out the sound. He was an admirer of arrangers like Stan Kenton, and I believe he paid more attention to the overall sound of the trio when he played than some other guitarists would. People in talking about Jim Hall have observed that his solos have a clarity and logic to them. The solos aren’t, say, eight separate ideas that came to him on the bandstand but are connected from start to finish. The same can be said of Bickert’s solos. Jim Hall plays on a slower version of Come Rain or Come Shine. The trio is led by Jimmy Giuffre with Hall and Ray Brown.

Las series del ii-V se presentan en buena parte del jazz que adopta la forma del blues estandar pero modificado!. Las alteraciones ocurren en acordes de la dominante!.

I’ve been playing finger-style for a little bit and am now trying to transition to hybrid like the way Ed played. Any tips from hybrid players on making the pick attack nice and soft when playing 3 or 4 note chords with the pick and fingers, especially with triplets/faster tempo? Im getting a little bit of clicking or buzzing here and there which wasn’t a problem when I was using my thumb and index instead of the pick, wondering if there’s a better angle or another tip for how to hold the pick more like Ed did

Hi François, fantastic work. Do you have any ideas on how Ed plays the 5 note chords (as in bars 6 and 8, for example) with the right hand? Do you think he hits the 2 lower notes with the pick and the upper 3 with the fingers?

François could you make a transcription of joe pass "you turn the tables on me" version? I love that song and his version is just the best.

The phrasing ahead of he beat poetry . The storied pages of our age. Ed really spoke this one in front of the beat. I wonder if he played this after or before or after his wife died? Rain or Come Sunshine He believed above the voicings a paragraph above or beyond the so called mad scientist as some may say gently. Playing above analyzation
