LONG-LINE: amzn.to/2Lr3ug1
Restrained Recall Training (The Party Recall!)
Before Training “Recall”: You should have trained the “Name Game”, “Hand Target”
and collar grab before training your recall.
Hand Signal: There is no hand signal for the recall but some will choose to put out their “target” hand so their dog has a clear indicator of where they should be coming to.
Voice Cue: Pick a special word that you don’t say in everyday life. Most people overuse the word “come” so their dog tends to ignore it. Instead pick something like “NOW”, “CHARGE” or anything else you will remember in an emergency situation.
Motivation: Here we are creating a conditioned emotional response (CER) in the dog’s brain of wanting to get to you when they hear your recall word. Dogs are typically intrinsically motivated to chase you. You need to be fun and exciting and your dog will associate fun and exciting things with you and coming to you. If you do not put effort into making yourself fun now, your dog will not perform when the recall is more difficult (say off a squirrel). The food or the toy should just be a bonus for your dog. The real fun of coming is getting to play and be with you!

i don't mean to sound dramatic, but if my childhood dog had been trained in this (and/or "wait") he probably would have got to die of old age. it really is an important skill and i think it's easy to overlook it as a *skill* because it feels like a given that a dog who loves you will want to come to you when they hear their name. at the time, as a kid, i basically thought training was just for tricks. it makes me sad. but im glad this basic information is more common knowledge now and videos like these can help people learn how to teach and strengthen these skills. thanks for helping keep dogs safe 💜

I have an akbash, pretty stubborn and hyper independent, 3.5 months. Only way I get her to come in play time off leash is when I start running and she chases me for play. Then it's quite occasional but most of the times, she just takes off sniffing and impossible then to recall her. I guess I should keep her on leash. I tried this exercise, it was funny she just laid down at the feet of my mum, wondering what the hell I wanted!

Too bad I can’t run anymore, I used to run away from my dogs and they loved it. I’ve had to change tactics.

There are definitely other options outside of running. Im glad you have a way that works for you! I really like the "name game": kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKa2ZGmHa8qjoas

This reminds me of the old video "Really Reliable Recall" (esp the long drawn out reinforcers, different cue, with my late Corgi I used "Ya--hooo here"). She was a puppy mill rescue dog with a horrible history. It did work.

What a great observation Jay! This method was definitely influenced by RRR (as well as other amazing trainers - we all stand on the shoulders of giants) as I learned directly from Leslie Nelson herself :)

@@DoggyU I'm an old guy, I'm afraid. I had a CD drive. Got the CD and played it, those were the expensive old days (as for videos). :D I don't think she set up the chase (normally), but it was part of the program. Only video of her's I had, but I had a VERY old 15 minute Karen Pryor video called "Clicker Magic". My fav part? A cat running a cat size agility set up.

@@DoggyU Also broke down how she taught it. My "other animal' for Karen Pryor Academy (you are required to C/T another species) was a 2 year old Savannah cat. She learned many useful tricks--touch, follow (a stick), place, etc. At the end, i video taped it. Wish i knew where this was. Blew the teacher away--I think that I taught the cat anyway. Cat loved it--cats are so soooo taking treats, but there are a few awesome cat trainers on youtube.

@@515aleon YES! I just had @catschool follow me over on instagram and came to youtube to check out her channel and it was fabulous. You might not know this, but I got into clicker training on species outside of dogs, exotics specifically and then horses, pigs, my family cat, and finally dogs when I was out of college and able to get my own place. It's so much fun training all species!

hi! how do you introduce the "tone" in a collar?

I don’t have a video for teaching the tone specifically (though it can be introduced like any other recall word) but I’m Hoping to actually do that video in the next month or so. Stay tuned!

ideas if you can not run?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
If running isn't an option, using a toy that "runs" can be helpful! (or a tug if your dog likes that). But using a flirt pole can be very useful: amzn.to/45N7AnX Also figuring out what motivates your dog. So would simply backing up and then throwing a party be just as good? Could you hide and have them come find you? Could you toss a treat between your legs or past you so they have to run by. Lots of options!

Where do you get your stands for your dogs ? I am working with my puppies they are 4 months old in an indoor arena with sand . Any suggestions they seem to drop the food often and eat a bit of sand and get upset stomach .

I use the KLIMB training platform form Blue-9 Pet Products. I've also used the CATO board (long one) as well. However, for a cheaper option, perhaps purchase one of those large indoor outdoor carpets that one might use camping. That would give you a very large space to train on in the sand, and then just shake it out and fold it up when you're done? Camping rug: amzn.to/3BLiXOq KLIMB: amzn.to/3sj59b0

Just to clarify: is this game to teach a recall cue that is ONLY to be used in emergency situations, or with the recall cue we want them to respond to on a regular basis, ex. out on a walk with them?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ari! The answer is, it depends. This concept can be used to teach either. If you are going to abuse your everyday recall word (ie. call your dog and not reinforce, call them and do things they don't like, etc) than use this video to teach a special emergency recall word. If you set out to "protect" your recall word against poisoning it, it can be used for your every day recall and is an effective way to teach it.

What if you can't run due to medical problems?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 жыл бұрын
Physical limitations around running would mean I would turn my body to the side and take a step if possible. You want your body to look inviting to the dog. Then you'll do everything else the same, big party, lots of high value rewards. Start in a low distraction environment and work your way up. You can also use a toy that "moves" instead of moving your body such as the Tail Teaser as a reward: amzn.to/3MAOEOc Hope that helps! :)

Could saying your dog's name be the recall trigger for them
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael! While saying your dog's name should be a trigger for them to orient or pay attention to you, you may not want to make it your recall cue. For example, if you are walking with your dog and you want to change direction but your dog is not looking at you, you may want to say their name, but not have them do a formal recall, and then change direction. Or you may be training them to go to place and you want them to look at you and then do another cue. There's lots of instances in training where having the dog pay attention when using their name would be useful but having them come every time they hear their name would not. But that's totally up to you! Happy training!
