I am currently in school for vet assistant. I am so nervous about this. I love animals but I know this job can be super HARD. I need your advice on being new to this field. I am super anxious about my externship.

My advice to you is to ALWAYS ask questions. Keep a small note book with you and take down notes especially for medication and labs. Keep yourself busy and familiarize yourself with the hospital you’re going to be at so when someone asks for help to grab something to restock something you know exactly where to go instead of being lost. Another thing, always ask if you can do something (ex : blood draw, labs etc) the worst they can say is no but at-least you’re showing that you are interested and want to learn. Lastly, don’t be nervous. You will learn more working in a hospital than you ever will in school. As long as you love your job it will be a great time! Good luck ❤️❤️

How much do you get paid an hour

Everyone gets paid differently it’s based on the hospital you are at and what you discuss with the manager during your hire. All I can say is we are very much underpaid for the job we do and that’s for every Vet, vet assistant and RVT out there.

what is the regular shift of Vet Assistant? is it 8hrs a day ?

Yes, if you are full time then you are scheduled 8hrs a day 5 days a week. It also depends on what hospital you are at and what the hours they need to fill.

Do you have to be in school to get a job as a vet assistant?

No you do not have to go to school to become a vet assistant. You would have to go if you wanted to become a registered veterinary technician. As an assistant it’s usually learn on the job and as long as you have a great work ethic and are willing to learn new things they can hire you with out any experience as well.
