Paul used a Rick with tape wounds on Come Together , a lot of his jazz bass was in the white album and his Hofner was in earlier stuff
@EllissDee4you4me
@EllissDee4you4me 10 ай бұрын
He also pretty much exclusively used the hoffner for get back because apparently they couldn’t find someone to make a new nut for his left handed ric. In London. Kinda ridiculous. My head cannon is that Paul used the nut as an excuse because he wanted the mojo of the hofner since they were, you know, getting back.

This was definitely his Rickenbacker, which had been his main bass since Rubber Soul alongside his Hofner and then his primary bass from Sgt. Pepper’s up to Abbey Road before switching back to his Hofner on Let It Be (and subsequently returning to his Rick for his solo career with Wings after The Beatles broke up)

I'm thinking it was the Hofner but I wanted to poll the web too... this is the most popular answer... The Höfner None more so, than on one of the most iconic basslines of all time, Abbey Road's 'Come Together'. The Höfner may have a woody tone that feels entirely unique to Macca. It is well documented that he used the Rick 4001 predominately for this record and the only song he used the Hofner on (with Rotosound tapewounds) was I Want You (She's So Heavy) - you can hear by the intonation on the isolated track it's the Hofner. As for Come Together though, there's too much mid in the tone for it to be. The only songs he used the Jazz bass on after he was given his first one during the White Album sessions were: YNGMYM, Glass Onion, WMGGW, Yer Blues, Sun King and Mean Mr Mustard. From Sgt Pepper's in 1967 onwards, his main rig was his 1964 Rickenbacker 4001 through a Fender Bassman. He went back to the Hofner with tapewounds for Let It Be (as seen in the Get Back sessions), but soon after joining Wings went back to using the Rick 🙂 He used the same one exclusively on Sgt Pepper. It's worth comparing with the isolated tracks for reference, clearest IMO are A Day In The Life and Lucy In The Sky. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ3amI2njrV7d5Y&pp=ygUdRGF5IGluIHRoZSBsaWZlIGJhc3MgaXNvbGF0ZWQ%3D

Lennon is saying, "Shoot me," in the beginning, not shhhh, by the way. Also, I would say Ric bass for this song in particular. The album in general? There were 4 different bass guitars used on Abbey Road. Paul pulled the hofner out of retirement for She's So Heavy, Paul and George both used a Fender Jazz throughout, George plays a Fender Bass VI on Maxwells silver hammer.

It’s not the Höfner. Could be the jazz, but sounds more like a Rick. Ricks the only one that has that “firm” low mid thing going, very different from what a Höfner does (ime). I might get close with the right amp etc playing soft (probably closer to the neck) on a jazz bridge pup with tone rolled off, but I’d get there pretty fast on a Rick for sure. Disclaimer: I’ve never owned a Höfner, and I never will. Only played them a couple of times. (Don’t own a Rick atm either, but played those extensively).

Not knowing what bass it was between a ric, hoff, or jazz, just goes to show how much the hardware just doesn't matter. For most OTHER pop music the bass is so buried in the mix that it might as well be a broom handle, a laundry line, and a wash tub. I am offended by this reality too, but outside of fellow bass players - nobody cares. Average music consumers today aren't really listening.

A lot of folks here are saying it was the Rick but it doesn't sound like ANY Rickenbacker I've ever heard. Neither does it sound like a Fender Jazz. I've owned both. Sold the Rick in NYC because I didn't care for the flatness in the neck, but I still have the Jazz. Sounds like his Hofner, at least to my ears. Paulie is still with us. Next person to see him should just ask.
