The Taxi driver should put on his metre at all time. If he is not using it it’s against the law and you have all right to report him to the police. If you have evidence, it’s much better. He will be fine and depending on case to case basis his taxi license get revoked for at least 6 months or more.

@10:07 Did you book this taxi using the DiDi App?? If you did, there should be no problem. There may be some freelance taxis waiting outside the more popular tourists attractions and these will charge more and not use the fare meters. Unless desperate, you can avoid these freelance taxis.

Haven't called a taxi for many years. In China, almost no one calls taxi these days. Use Didi, it's cheaper, and the fare is fixed.

Hello :), Great video :)! Could you maybe tell me what paying is like in Shanghai? Can you only pay via WeChat or does cash payment also work? If you buy a metro ticket, if you go to a cafe, if you go out to eat...can you pay in cash? I would be very interested in that. Thanks

We actually never really tried to pay with cash. Some places (not many) accepted our European VISA card, but generally we used AliPay. We didn’t take the metro in Shanghai, so we’re not sure whether you can pay your ticket with cash - but we did take it in Beijing and paid with Alipay as well. Hopefully this helps! 😊

Always use didi app to get taxi service. If you hail a random car on the street 80% chance you will be scammed. However If you keep the receipt you can always call a local bureau number to complain and get your money back. Your hotel staff might help you with that. Average taxi cost 2.5rmb/km. A 15 min ride should be 30-50rmb. If the driver refuse to use the meter. You can refuse to pay.

I'm sorry about your taxi experience. There are indeed such problems with taxis in Shanghai now. Some drivers do not follow the rules and do not turn on the meter and defraud tourists, especially those from other cities or abroad. The best way in Shanghai is to use the Didi APP. It will calculate the price according to different levels of car models, time periods and distances. Drivers will also follow the rules to provide better services. Obviously you met a bad taxi driver, not every taxi driver is like him, you are foreigners and you don't speak Chinese, if it is a Chinese people take the taxi and the driver doesn't use the meter, the passenger can complain to the relevant authorities and the driver will be punished for sure . Also: To avoid this situation, you can use Didi Taxi, just like UBER
