The original problem was stuck open GDI fuel injectors, from a failed high pressure pump, that was causing severe misfiring. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHPUnH19apVjr80 The car comes back 3 months later with another misfire, but it's ignition related this time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/haDdh6uZi6lmoK8 Should the tech get paid again for his diagnostic time? What if it has the same P0300 (random misfire) code?
@codeythemechanic3 жыл бұрын
The original issue wasn't an intermittent issue that only happened every few months, therefore if it was fixed for 3 months, it was most likely fixed properly the first time. If the parts replaced went bad, that's a warranty issue obviously, but the shop needs to be clear up front when the vehicle first comes back that the vehicle was obviously fixed when it left and therefore the customer needs to *approve the diagnostic time first* since this is more than likely a separate issue, and *IF* it is found to be a warranty or workmanship issue once the diag is done then the shop/parts supplier will take care of the bill. If the customer doesn't understand that and demands you fix it for free no matter what, they aren't a customer you want.

The issue is you get managers who don't turn wrenches and customers who don't understand what has been done and think technicians are trying to rip people off. So the tech gets blamed for the fault and it ends up being put down as a come back. Unfortunately not every tech can have video evidence to show it is a completely different fault, like in this case where the coils were installed incorrectly by someone else. Good video Danner, I have seen the previous ones on this vehicle.
@ScannerDanner3 жыл бұрын
And then the managers, who get paid in the form of bonuses on how much they make for the shop, find it easier and more profitable for themselves, to make it a "comeback". They don't want to charge the customer again because maybe the customer is upset, even though it is a separate problem. So what do they do? They make the tech look at it for free. This is bullshit, agree? If the manager wants to keep the customer happy and not charge a diag fee, that's fine, he can do that, but it should NEVER be at the expense of the tech! The garage should eat the cost and pay the tech!! But this affects the managers bottom line, so guess who gets screwed! Time to start sticking up for ourselves my friends!

Paul I also agree this was not a "comeback." I would though like to say I was told by a very smart older mechanic when I was new to the industry , that you are not selling your knowledge or education or even your experience. You are selling your time that is all, they pay for parts and your time. They would lose their mind if you charged for your experience ,education, and the equipment you use to repair their vehicle. I think it’s fair to pay for a person’s time. It’s not fair to expect anyone to work for free. I always ask apprentices to ask these question… Is what I’m seeing the same as what the person reporting the fault is experiencing and is what I find a cause or a casualty of the fault. In some cases things are ‘missed’ or not thought to be related to the fault. Fault finding is not parts changing; it’s a process of assessment. Assessing what you see, hear, smell and feel along with information from measuring and diagnostic equipment. Just because the ‘symptoms’ are similar (same) as previous does not mean that it’s the same fault. Once all the information is assessed an action plan can be developed and put in place. Fault finding should be a methodical process and it shouldn’t be surprising to anyone that time spent thinking about something can be time well spent.

ABSOLUTELY YES!!! The tech & the shop should get paid for their time to diagnose & fix the car. As said, this problem was created by the customer or whomever replaced the ignition parts. The tech & the shop can not control nor be responsible for the actions of the customer. Too many people hold technicians to a standard of perfection. We are human like everyone else. We do make mistakes. But in this case, neither the shop nor the technician made these mistakes. They absolutely deserve to be compensated for their time to fix this car properly. Lesson for the customer: The reason technicians & garages charge for their time is for their knowledge & experience. I've never heard of anyone going to their Doctor & expecting them to diagnose them for free after they have tried to self medicate based on a google search. That Doctor will charge for their tests & their time. The same should be true for the automotive shop.

Great video. Customers think that if you work on their car, that they should have trouble free driving for a long time, and if they don't there's a problem with the work the mechanic did. Tis not so. The mechanic will repair the current problem and will not be going through every possible problem you could have with the car going forward. You would never be able to afford the repair if he did. Add to that the fact that cars are very complex machines with thousands of parts that are wearing out constantly at different rates of speed. It's irrational to try and hold any mechanic responsible for your car. Wake up, smell the coffee. I've had customers that seek free mechanics work come to me and blame me for a problem that I've been able to clearly demonstrate to them was unrelated to the work I did in the past. In one breath they'll agree, and in the next breath they'll state, 'yes, but you worked on it last and must have done something..." The funniest worst case was when I replaced the clutch in a 66 chevelle and the customer called me a week later angry because the radio stopped working within a day or so of the repair.. True story.. I stated to them, 'you understand enough about how the clutch and the radio work to know they're unrelated right? They said , 'yes, but you worked on it last and must have done SOMETHING to the radio somehow'. I hung up the phone.. Another customer fired.

We had a customer bring in his FUSO FK (Med duty diesel trk) because it is running a regen every 50 miles or so but no codes or check engine lights. The tech notices the DPF and DOC are clogged, so we tell him it needs to go out and be cleaned. Will this fix the problem? Maybe, but it needs to be done before we can go further because it is a problem. Get it done and back on the trk and the customer takes it. Back 3 days later same issue. Thinks we should replace the leaking injectors and exhaust brake they were causing the problem. Well Sir, your trk has 260k on it and you drove it for several months with this issue. You were also told this might not fix the underlying issue, but it did need to be taken care of. Customer doesn’t ever hear the part where we have to fix something first to a. Rule it out and b. Maybe fix an issue caused by your main issue, because the clogged DPF is a problem in itself.

From the first time around with the injectors and then paying again for a diagnostic for the ignition misfire.

It's just as bad in the electronics repair. People freak when you want a $100 or $150 to repair a Digitizer and LCD for a cell phone for a screen they shattered. They look up the part for like $40 or $50, higher ends phones usually cost more. But then fuss at the cost, thinking it's just a simple task that shouldn't cost that much. Yet the'll fork out hundreds to a thousand bucks for these phones. Then there is family that thinks you should just fix it for free, it isn't that difficult and you know how to do it.

And let’s not even talk about intermittent problems. I got 1 trk that’s vexing me for months. Driver said it would stall going in reverse then making right turns. Took months to get it to stall for us. It’s currently sitting at our shop. Lead tech thought he fixed it and it came back a week later, second tech working on it thought he fixed it and it stalled backing out of the shop. This 20 year old step van is driving everyone crazy. Will it stall if you pull on wires or jiggle wires, not at all. Take it for a 50 mile test drive through traffic in down town Philly, not a blip. Got to park it and everything cuts off (all power lights and motor). Wait 15 sec and restart and it’s good again for another couple weeks. One day they’ll either scrap the trk or one of us will pull on the right ground or wire. If trucks weren’t so hard to buy right now I’m sure this trk would be in the scrap yard already.

Make sure the vehicle speed sensor wiring is not rubbing on the front driveshaft. The reverse stall made me think of that. I even have a video on one

@@ScannerDanner haha I really don’t like intermittent problems because until you figure out how to repeat the problem you are never 100% if you fixed it.
@matthewzoelle91492 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner lol it does it going forward too. When it happens everything shuts off, headlights, dash lights, radio, fuel pump (which is the cause of the stall). Total electrical issue. A big part of the issue it finding the problem is that most of the wiring harness was replaced years ago and what was used to replace it wasn’t factory standard or correct wire colors are mostly the same. No accurate wiring diagram is only a problem when you need to find a wiring issue.

20 year old van? Those would all be separate circuits. Main body ground issue?

@@stevejakobsen2765 True enough. Heading to court as the defendant usually indicates you handled the situation incorrectly. Most folks expect to pay for services rendered. Its the gray areas that need extra communication upfront.

That's like saying my I pad is not working and i take it to a computer shop they can't fix it but I still have to pay. Nope sound like a shady place to me better check the circuit boards and connectors. Especially if they blow up start yelling and hollering it cursing and everything else. In Its called I'm being a professional as everyone here claims to be or wants to be paid like one.

At the end of the day the majority of people see automotive mechanics as the bottom of the totem pole humans always hoping for the no parts required and “ill buy you lunch” attitude. But if you charge them for true time you are ripping them off. I seen appliance technicians make more than automotive techs just because of precept ions and people gladly pay $900 for a 1 hour refrigerator repair. But a mechanic has to be cheap right? Free even? No! How about $200 for a dryer belt and tensioner without having to get dirty. And people think $60 its too much for a a/c belt and tensioner fir a vortex engine. $240 for a switch knob on a dryer? Easy money 10 calls a day $1000 to $3000 a day most calls 1 hour max

I just enjoy that IF the bill was contested here, "Ever since you" would get to be employed in reverse. The customer said up front they replaced parts on their own and you got to prove the consequences of their mistakes. Even though Danner has the option to not charge the customer for your time, I kinda hope he did. People love to play the victim and threaten shops with bad google reviews. Or they just look for ways to abuse your good graces and expect that since you didn't bill them for their stupidity last time, they shouldn't have to pay for it next time. Somewhere in the comments, Paul, you said you see a one in ten ratio of good students. I see that same ratio in humanity. I wish we could leave google reviews on people the same way we leave google reviews on businesses. I'd love to see the fallout from that. "According to your google reviews, Mr Johnson, you're an epic asshole. I won't be scheduling your car for any work at all." Imagine how attitudes would change when your car is broke and six shops just refused you any service.
