Kate is probably the first person who has (unintentionally) persuaded me that cuteness is a legitimate aesthetic. I’ve always rejected the more cloying and self-conscious styles of cuteness, for example, “kawaii.” I don’t want to sound as if I’m gushing, but she seems very sincere and human, and she has a childlike quality she’s apparently never lost and a curiosity that is no put-on; it’s her ever-inquisitive and creative mind, as well as healthy appreciation for the absurd, expressing itself in different pursuits, i.e. puppetry, comedy, painting, performing, songwriting. Is there a reason why humor or even cuteness should be excluded from the list of things we usually associate with “renaissance” figures?
